I found this to be super insightful. Knowing that GenX runs the DISboards, these are some interesting tips- even if they are meant to apply to the workplace.

I found that chart interesting as well.

DH & I are both very firmly Gen-Xers, & he & I were both raised in very firmly Baby Boomer households, churches, & schools - especially myself. Both my parents worked, & I was a "latch-key" kid. DH's mom didn't work, but his parents had a cleaning business in the evenings. We both attended the same, small private school, & the high school administrator (who had the most influence over us) was very much a Baby Boomer - the high school administrator was also a woman, & the way she carried herself, the authority she maintained, the high standards she set - all these things very much influenced both of us, but in different ways.

And those "strategies for working across" the generations have mixed in w/ our own core Gen-X values, if that makes sense. We were both raised that you dressed "formally" for important occasions & that you "put in time" & "go the extra mile" & that things should be "well-organized w/ clearly defined steps for moving forward".

However, we were also raised to be independent & self-reliant & practical/efficient.

Oldest of the Gen X (1966) but feel more like a young Baby Boomer since my DH is one, as are many of my friends.

This thread has been great fun. Now I'm going to interject some Disney!

Did you know, and you probably did because everyone here has been into Disney much longer than me, that the AofA resort was originally going to be the "legendary years" half of Pop Century? But it was scrapped after 9/11, only to be restarted in 2010/11 and turned into what it is now. The bridge between the two was supposed to symbolize bridging the generation gap. Cue the awwws, because that's what I thought when reading this. How sweet. :')

Millennials were originally Gen Y, somewhere along the line they changed it.

Who decided "generations" needed labels anyway.
Gen X is also know as (or at least used to be) "Baby Busters". The smallest generation - socially and professionally oppressed by our Boomer overlords and now rendered culturally irrelevant by the Millennials.

I've got a very eclectic set of values being the Gen X child of Traditionalist parents and all my siblings being Boomers. My only child is a Gen Edge'r. :upsidedow

Yes!!

We're surrounded!

I agree in general, but not always. I think some people are naturally good at multitasking and are able to do it and still maintain high productivity. And millennials are said to have short attention spans.

Even those who are "good at it" aren't good enough to overcome the loss of productivity that comes with stopping & restarting.

There are exceptions. I worked for awhile running 3 machines at the same time. They each had similar run time. I could start machine 1, then 2, then 3 before #1 finished its cycle. When 1 ended, I could change parts & restart it before 2 ended and so on. BUT, each of those tasks had built in down time. And that's the only reason it worked.

Gen Y used to be called Gen Whine over here. Maybe they got fed up of it and changed ;)

I'm Gen X

Yes! We watched it for a long time - first being built, and then sitting empty.

I think if it had been built as the Legendary Years, it would've been awesome, too! I remember seeing projections about it.

Nurses have to be good at multi-tasking. It can get crazy sometimes! :hyper:
It's similar in my job too but I do completely agree with @Gumbo4x4 . I would get waaaaay more accomplished in a day if I could just prioritize and schedule the tasks and actually finish something before I had to leave it for something else. I'm governed by the "tyranny of the urgent" which is not to be confused with the most important. :headache:
