Let the Prom Drama CONTINUE . . . . . . . .

Where is Sheila at this week? She went off to Orlando on Saturday for that conference, do you think she is still there? I am assuming, but her DH and DD are not with her. Those tornados were awful and being the worry wart that I am my first thought was her.

I went back and re-read; she said she'd be home late Tuesday night. Maybe she's catching up at work today? I hope she's okay.

Sheila, please check in and let us know you and yours are all right!!!

Melissa, I hope your DS is better at tempering his opinions than mine - DS is convinced that he's right in nearly every situation and THAT'S what worries me about his future bodily health in college!!

Good afternoon, ladies! Thanks for the kind thoughts, they must have helped.

My plane was due to land at 6 p.m. CST last night (right about the time all the tornadoes were hitting). The airport had to shut down, and we were kept in a holding pattern for about 45 minutes.

Once we did land, we had to try to find a way out of Memphis. Many of the major streets and highways were closed due to the damage. The women I had with me were a little concerned about the weather. I didn't tell them this, but personally, I was a lot more concerned about the areas of Memphis I was going to have to navigate through than I was about the weather at that point (definitely NOT the best parts of town).

My DH was at home (where they had been advised to take cover). He was able to watch the Memphis news and keep me updated on the major road closings and impending weather (a second line was on its way).

We had to turn around on several roads and find alternate routes, but we finally did make it out and back to our own town. Wind and rain was pretty bad (made worse by driving a 15 passenger van ). Debris was all over the roads.

I had to periodically reassure everybody that everything was fine (of course, they were getting regular phone calls telling them how bad it actually was ). One of the women got a text message right after we landed from her little girl saying, "Mama, I love you, are you on the plane? I don't want you to die!"

I couldn't help but smile to myself when I heard them discussing in the back of the van (the luggage was in the front couple of seats, so I was up front by myself) how "calm and organized and in control of the situation" I was. I wanted to ask them what my other options were! Somebody had to keep them calm!

There was a great deal of damage to the area (many towns in the Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi area) with people being trapped in some places. Many schools are closed (not ours though). We've got a lot of stuff in the yard but no real damage. DD's college town was also hit hard. She and her roommate stayed at their friend's house (had a basement).

Everybody is safe at home now. I think I made it back to my house around 9:30 p.m.

I do get your concern tho, we discuss the same thing with our DS regardless of his size, his mouth gets him into trouble on occassion.

Dang, we are having a mutiny in our weekly safety meeting this morning. We fired an employee last week for physically attacking the supervisor so the issue was addressed this morning and met with a litany of "we are not happy" "we are ALL ready to quit" yada yada yada.......babies!
So, my boss (the owner) gets to go smooth all their feathers while I remind my boss that we need to send our plant manager to some manager training classes. He gets the job done, but he is a bully about it and it does not surprise me that he got decked (not condoning or justifying) just stating my observations.

Your return trip sounds traumatic, but I'm glad that YOU were the calm and cool one in charge. Way to go, girl.

Glad that you had no real damage, but I feel bad for all of the loss of life in your region. I hope it's no one that you know.

To condense my replies to your other posts. Yet another voter with Republican leanings here! We still have the primary (and I'm glad, I don't think I'd really want the caucus).

I couldn't help but laugh at the comment about Obama and the anti-Christ. After our dealings with our new Supt. and how he's turned out (he's also very personable and well spoken like Obama), the same thought has crossed my mind!

DH's father is a staunch Democrat. I had always heard the term "yellow dog Democrat" but didn't really know what it meant (I guess I thought it was an insult or something). After DH and I married, he explained to me that it meant that a Democrat would vote for a yellow dog running as a Democrat before they'd vote for a Republican candidate. Then it made sense!

My DD is much like your sons - very conservative and VERY opinionated. She used to have a shirt that we bought in FL when she was about 13 that said "I'm not opinionated, I'm just always right" (and let me tell you, she believes it! ).

Must be the day for company mutanies. A couple of months ago, they gave us an anonymous survey to fill out about how we feel about working here. Now, I like my job, but there are a lot of "issues" with the direction that corporate leadership is taking us in. So I, along with a great many of the company, honestly answered said survey and wrote some not-so-nice feedback on it. Well, I think Senior Managment (how many Senior VPs can one company HAVE anyways? ) got their feelings hurt that not as many people liked them as THEY thought should, so we got a "we got the results of the company's employee survey and we hear you and we're disturbed that you don't like us and we're trying to take the company in the best direction (but not really) that we can manage" e-mail. I don't think they impressed anyone.

It took us almost a YEAR to start discussing politics, and you can rest assured that no one's beliefs will get tromped on around here - except for those of my DS who gets on my last nerve because he just KNOWS that he's right!! OMGosh - what a bunch of babies! My employees - we had temper tantrums that would make a 2 year old envious. Then I went to lunch with my friend, we went to PF Changs and I had an Asian Pear Mojito - yummy!. I never (really, I see your looks of dismay) drink during the work day but today is my B-Day and I had 1 drink, then we sat and talked for 2 hours (yes, Sheila, I am justifying my actions) She gave me new "bad kitty" jammies to match the "bad kitty" Lollita martini glass she gave me last year

Politics - didn't really mean to start a discussion, I agree everyone is entitled to their opinions and I know some people can be very passionate, good for them, someone needs to be. I'm to tired to be passionate about much of anything except of course a well made Lemon Drop Martini!

Sometimes I do feel that way!

Lots and lots of damage. Last night's Memphis news gave a lot of coverage. There are parts of Memphis that won't have power back for weeks. They said it wasn't a repair job, it was a complete rebuild job.

Jackson, TN has Union University. Every building on their campus except for one was damaged. A lot of them (if not the majority) were destroyed. The dorms were hit the hardest. Almost every car on campus was severely damaged or destroyed, so those kids not only don't have a place to live, their transportation is gone too.

Lots of deaths too (but none in Mississippi). We live almost on the TN line, so we're very close to the areas that did have deaths. We were very fortunate, but I feel so sorry for those who lost loved ones.

How was Orlando?????

Orlando was wonderful. The weather was clear and plenty warm. One of my people commented on how she couldn't get over laying out by the pool in February. Yep, that's why I love the place!

They were all pleased with the hotel, and the location was great too. All in all, it was a great conference. The teachers have already contacted me to let me know that they're using things they learned in their classrooms!

DH has a textbook selection meeting in Tupelo (won't be back until 4:30 or 5:00), and DFi has a pre-standardized test meeting in Starkville (not sure when he'll be back). DH has said that if we can't get there in time for the free style reining, he's not going. It starts at 7:30 in Jackson, so I don't think there's any way we can make it. She and I would just go on our own, but she feels bad leaving DFi on Valentine's weekend (ahh, young love ). I hate to miss it too. I really look forward to it each year. Oh well, there's always next year....

Funny story:
Last week in my home email I see a notice from the local florist the subject line is "confirmation of your recent order" (I do not open the email) I'm thinking that DH actually remembered ahead of time and went so far as to call the florist. I am talking with my best friend and we were discussing how hard it is for our DH's to surprise us.......she opened a drawer to put some socks away and found her Valentine present, I check our email and see the confirmation for the flowers.
So, B-day rolls around, my best friend drops off a balloon bouquet and I go to lunch with another friend. I come back to my office, no flowers. Hummmmm, I think, so I go and look at the email - Delivery confirmation for 2/23/08 First thought, "he thinks my b-day is the 23rd? He is an idiot" second thought "Who the H%** is he sending flowers to?" Look at my calendar, the 23rd is DS's formal and the confirmation is for his corsage & boutinere........ boy do I feel like an idiot! DH comes home from work with a pot of mums!

We are off to a B&B in Nevada City (Sierra Foothills on the Calif. side) with another couple friend of ours tomorrow morning.

Tonight I am off to the Sr. Night for the basketball team and then all of us Moms are going out for drinks. DS does not play basketball but his best friend does.

Trying to coordinate where DD is going - it was all good until her brother finally listened to us and got a job. Now he has to work both Sat & Sun and we had planned on her staying home with him all weekend. Now, I am rallying the troops to get her taken care of and leaving him unchaperoned

Just kidding, we had a meeting out of town when DD was about 17, and she stayed on her own (her bestfriend came and stayed with her). They were out feeding the horses when a helicopter started flying back and forth very low over the barn (stayed a long time and scared them to death). They finally ran for the house and called us. After awhile, it left.

DFi (BF, back then) told them that tomatoes give off a heat signature that is very similar to marijuana, and my DH has a HUGE tomato patch (doesn't grow anything else much, but he loves to grow tomatoes - he's known all over the county for them). Apparently, they were doing sweeps and zoned in on our tomatoes! If they called it in to the sheriff's office, he would have told them, "Aww, that's just his tomato garden."

Well, DD can't be too bummed if she is willing to not go with you because DFI can't go I hope you sort it out, sounds like something you all enjoy.

I'm holding out hope that something works out, but I doubt it.

I hadn't heard that about California, but it's possible. I have found that there are a lot more errors in textbooks these days. That's one reason you need to have teachers who really know their subject matter, but I've seen ones who didn't who taught something wrong based on the book having the wrong answer.



Found out this morning that one of the administrators is being moved to a different position (not losing his job exactly but losing his current job). This man has a national award for doing what he does, but he's being put in charge of the school buses.

Others are meeting with the new Supt. one by one today. I wonder what's coming now?

DS will be fine, I think he is thrilled that we got rid of the ankle biter! We left him a couple of years ago when we went to NV. City for my 40th B-day and he was fine. Remember, my best friend lives next door, I live in a subdivision so her front door is closer to my front door than DS's room is. My neighbor keeps a good eye on him, she is his 2nd mother. He gets off work at 12:30 a.m., believe me if his happy little hiney is not home by 1:30 she will be tracking him down. She has a key and full access, nothing gets by her DH and I will be blissfully unaware, she will handle it!

Now that's helpful! My aunt and uncle live next door to us, but my next door and your next door are A LOT different! They're the other side of a large pasture, and the next nearest neighbor would be a half mile away.

As you said, textbooks are extremely expensive. You would think that they would be proofed, proofed, and then proofed again. Errors should be unusual, not one of many found in the book.

You know, when I read of all those tornados I had some pretty bad thoughts about the Idiot Supt.....

When word gets out about this guy being moved from where he can help kids and teachers to just taking care of buses and the grounds, there will be sparks flying. He's the brother of the guy who was fired/rehired last week, and he's very popular with the community.

Monday night's board meeting will probably be something to see (and I have to be there for stuff I have before the board).

I know this idiot was elected but is there talk yet of a recall vote? He is a dictator, whatever happened to the Democratic process. What is the overall feeling of the school board at this point, is mutiny on the horizon?

Last week DS calls me at work and says "So, umm Mom, is anyone going to be home this afternoon?" and I say "Why?" in my suspicious Mom voice. He says, "Oh, I was just wondering, GF and I were going to be leaving soon and wanted to know" have I told you that DS cannot make something up to save his life.....

Have I also told you that I am a worst case scenario thinker and have an over active imagination as well as high levels of anxiety. ie - I think the worst and overreact.

So, I call BFF who is next door and used to keeping an eye on DS. I tell her the story, she is also suspicious (mind you, we have no reason to not trust the kids, but they are hormone laden teens who have the whole house to themselves, we are not stupid) So, BFF keeps an eye on things. They did not leave anytime soon. She calls me about 2 hours later and whispers "they are still there" I whisper back "where are you" she whispers "at home" and I say in a whisper "then, why are we whispering?" we have a good laugh!

I mention this to DH, his eyes get really big, he starts to twitch, he practically puts his fingers in his ears and does the lalalalalala dance.
He says, "oh no, I can't deal with this, just the other day we were chaperoning the 3rd grade field trip and now you are worried he might be having sex, oh no.....my response..........."well, I didn't say they were having sex, I asked you if you thought they might be???"

Oh dear, this was not in the manual either! Good thing he is working most of the weekend.

I can top that now. I just found out that he's putting one of his Memphis City Schools friends up to be hired as the Asst. Supt. at $80,000/yr. He's even going to request that she be paid mileage to drive here from Memphis (about 150 miles roundtrip each day) - which is NOT legal. She was also a principal with MCS. I pulled her school up on the internet, and her scores weren't as good as ours either, but she's going to be put in charge of everything.

Add to that, our school district has less than 1400 students total. Tell me why we need an Asst. Supt.? Also, he proclaimed that all jobs should be advertised (which I agree with). This job wasn't advertised.

I know, it's a scary thing. Last summer, two of DFi's friends were getting married down on the coast. One of them was his college roommate, so DFi was in the wedding. He really wanted DD to go (everybody else's SO was going to be there), and she wanted to go. They had to stay overnight one night since they had to be there for the rehearsal dinner. Then they left after the wedding the next night and drove home (which took about 6 hours). They did have separate rooms (DFi stayed with another groomsman), and he thanked us profusely for letting her go.

Still, you do worry some. I felt better after DD got home and laughed at how the others couldn't believe they (she and BF) didn't fool around and slept in different rooms. She said that BF told them that they just didn't know DD! Still, you can't help but worry a little (I guess that's our job! )

Had to share all of this with DH! You have his sympathy too! And I agree about the 3rd grade field trip too!

I'm honest enough to admit, that while I don't think it's a problem, I'm intelligent enough to know that it could be. In their case, they're here most of the time (usually go eat and are back home by 8 p.m.), so that helps my concern some, but I know that if they decide to go that course, there's not much I could do about it (but sure wouldn't want to know about it! I'm with your DH and the fingers in the ears! ).

Okay, my fingers are planted firmly in my ears - there will be NO sex talk around here!!! With a 20-year old DD with a steady boyfriend and a 17-year old DS who is always checking out his "options", I just want to put my pillow over my head and play ignorant. . .

Seriously, my kids must think I'm some sort of sex fiend. I am not privy to what's going on, but I have preached PROTECTION until they roll their eyes at me, turn red, and get ready to bolt from the room. I think that the first time DS heard me say "condom", he was close to fainting!!

Sheila, you have the MOST exciting school district news. My goodness, I cannot believe what you are witnessing! I still think there may be a recall yet

To totally change gears now . . .

I went to the memorial on Saturday for Terrence, my friend Penny's son. It was so sad. Young people's funerals are so much worse because of the lost potential. Penny is just devastated, as is to be expected. I'm not much of a crier - didn't cry at all at my FIL's funeral last May, mainly because I was so relieved that he wasn't in pain anymore and he had lived a long life. Well, Terrence was only 22. One of his best friends got up there and gave a life sketch about Terrence. It was wonderful, and so touching. I completely lost it.

Not much else going on this weekend. DH and I are both battling colds and sinus issues (darn this weather). It's been very hard to sleep and we have been trying desperately to catch up some. I did not want the alarm to go off this morning.

Well, gotta get back to work. I hope that you all had good weekends, and check in when you can.
