Let the Prom Drama begin....Like Aurora, her dress keeps changing

Welcome you can always get a pair of cheap ones at walmart and decorate them up with lace or whatever.

Once you get the shoes, dress, jewerly figured out comes the hair. Don't over think it cause you'll start doubting it.

Yeah, I have been known to succumb to "paraylsis by analysis"...will do my best to watch that....my Mom is heading up her from Florida for surgery at the end of the month tho, so I would like DD to have most things figured out as I will be needing to focus on my mom in the 2 weeks before the Prom. Well, thanks again for the great help!

Pam

Pam,

Brava to your daughter for not caving. I went to the prom with a friend because my boyfriend of the time 'couldn't afford' to go. As it ends up, I paid for the 'friend' to take me-limo, tickets, etc. Only things I didn't pay for were my flowers and his tux and I think my boyfriend could have come up with the 50 or 60 bucks that would have cost! If the tickets for my prom hadn't been 80 bucks per couple (sit down dinner), I think I would have gone solo!

She'll have a great time if she does go by herself, because her other friends will be there, too.

Good luck, crossing my fingers that a 'prince charming' shows up, but even if he doesn't, I think she'll be fine!

I like the dress - pink and black are such a nice combo

I would down play the hair and let the dress really shine. If her hair is long maybe partially up and partially down.

I know the updo's are a big thing but I don't always think they are the most flattering - depends on the person.

That boy is slowly but surely making a total jerk of himself. The more he acts up the more confirmation for your Daughter that her decision was the right one.

My Ds - we were in town yesterday doing some errands and I suggested we stop and get his tux sorted out. He pipes up with, well, lets wait a few more days because I might have a date.......Really I say, who - a girl I don't know and it is a similar situation as before, the group of friends is pairing off or at least that is the current story. Maybe he is working on some nerve, I am unclear.

So prom moms of daughters - If my DS goes with a girl as a friend where the kids have all paired off who picks up all the costs??? Is it reasonable for them to split the tickets & dinner costs? What about flowers & pictures? I keep picking up the tab but I am not sure I should continue afterall the whole group has paired off. Any thoughts on the matter?????

DD's friends were dress shopping this weekend and DD hit the motherload....apparently the Jessica McClintock design favors her and she found 4 others that she likes better than the white one posted above. Luckily our departmant stores ( Macy's, Carson's) let you return special occasion dresses, so she brought thme home to try and decide. 2 are aqua blue, one is green and the other black and white polka dot...I will try and find pic's to post...so she is on her way...and actually planning on asking a friend to go today! He may not be here if still out of town for Easter, and DD figures he will most likely say no, but he is in her art class and plans on majoring in Computer Animation , she enjoys talking with him in school, so maybe...unless he already has a date which is very possible. She told her group that she would like to go along with htem even if she is solo, wuld they mind as she would make the group uneven, 11...but they said no problem so that was good. Well, I am off to return the white dress today. I will be pleased if DD chooses the polka dot, as it was $89...but one of the othere is $199 :scared1: DD already said she will pay the additional $100 and worked extra hours...already added a day to her schedule this week. So, how is everyone else doing?

Pam

Wow, sounds like things are moving right along for your DD and that she will be attending the prom regardless - good for her! Hope you can find some pictures!

Not much new to report here, still waiting on DS & date status to get tux. I am an idiot, the prom is at a local hotel/resort. For some reason I could have sworn DS told me it was at the school. This takes the cost of dinner out of the equation. Now it is just tux, tix, flowers, pix & transportation.

Finfan, glad for your DD's motherlode of dress possibilities. Better too many than not enough. I"m sure she'll look great in any of them.

Also, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for her and her prom date possibility - I hope he says yes!! I'm glad that she's getting over "the jerk".

My DD had dates both years she went to prom, but it seems to me in this instance, his girl "friend" should also contribute to the dinner, ticket, and picture costs. Around here, all of the kids contribute (girls and guys) if a limo is involved. And I always tried to contribute to the cost of dinner if the boy would accept the money. DD's boyfriend paid for her share of the limo last year; in fact he (his parents) paid for everything except DD's cost in getting ready and they wouldn't let me contribute, no matter how hard I insisted (they are very nice people). I made up for it by buying her boyfriend a generous gift card to Dillard's for graduation.

On the Colorado prom front, DS just texted me this morning, saying "I just came up with the greatest prom asking idea. I need balloons and posterboard." So I'm buying blue posterboard and red markers this afternoon. Will find out all the details of his plan when I get home.

Sandy, that sounds intriguing - keep us posted on what he does with the poster board..

Thanks for the input on the costs, I just need to wait and see what is going on then DS and I can have a little financial heart to heart.

Let the Prom Drama begin....Like Aurora, her dress keeps changing:rotfl: Just had to post that i love the title of your thread!!! Your daughter seems to be very mature.

Latest update: DD asked the boy from art class ( who coincidentaly is going to DD dream college for computer animation) and he said yes!:thumbsup2 She is excited to be going with a friend that she can have fun with...she just up and asked if he would like to go to Prom together, he said, "when is it?", she said a month from today, and he said, "Sure, I'd love to" so there ya go. They have been talking a LOT based on the college...it is way out of our budget...(Ringling school of art in Sarasota) but one of the few that offers a competitive 4 year animation degree for getting a decent job. The boy is taking a 2 week art camp there this summer, so DD is drooling over that, but knows we just can't do it, but she is thrilled to know someone who can . He just landed Silver in the Scholastic awards, which is really great for portfolio, DD landed first in Upstate 8, so I am sure they can find enough to talk about for the 4 hours of Prom. Here's the kcker tho...he has not been to a HS dance...went to his Jr Hi ones, but DD thinks is pretty clueless as to the formality of Prom...I said to use her art/animation skills and show him the norm , that the main thing is to have fun but that there is a dress code per say...I just dropped her at work and she is on :cloud9: . She did have another boy dshe would've asked if Art guy said no, but was really hoping it would work out thie way it did.
mamacatnv....here's my take on the expenses....since my DD TECHNICALLY did the asking ...( though I give her credit for saying "together" instead of "with me"..maybe he'll pay for his own ticket:rolleyes1 )
but my DD needs to expect to pay for both her and Art Guys tix..$130
The dinner is included in that, now the Limo runs $95 per hour, 3 hour minimum. 20% gratuity, totals $342...we have 10 kids...they are going to pay individually for the Limo, unless the boys WANT to cover for their girls, but since many are not "steady" it is not fair to expect it from all the guys, so for now, each will pay $35.
The boy covers the cost of his tux and the girls flowers. Here for Prom, Nosegays are the norm...the mini bouquet they hold...not wrist corsages. Guys get the usual Boutinniere ( sp?) Girls pay for their dress, hair, and guys flower. Our group wants to go to Great America the next day, if so, they will each pay their own addmittance to the park and their own food.
Basically, it's dutch...around here anyway...now seeing as how I have a son...if a girl asks him...I will have him cover the cost of the tickets for them both...that is just how I feel. He will at least offer...and certainly if he does the asking he will be buying the tickets. He will also offer to cover the limo...but the girl generally pays for the picture package if the guy is doing all of that. I do not know if my DD is going to get pictures at the Prom...she hates that sort of thing, so we will more than likely not have to worry about it, just take ones at the house.
I have to say...the kids are almost more excited about driving around in the Limo for 2 hours after Prom (to fulfill the 3 hour minimum) than the Prom itself!
I think Art Guy is in for a shock...and he is the oldest...no big brother or sister to help him out...DD is trying to figure out how to inform him of protocl while not being pushy or taking his choices away from him. I think they should hit the mall one day and just nose around the tux places...they both work a lot so, not sure, but I think it would be a good ice breaker of the situation. So...mamacatnv, and Sandy V., UPDATES! There's mine..hope all is well for you guys, and what's the poster idea?

Pam

Pam, I'm SO happy for your daughter. It sounds like she's got a prom date with a VERY nice young man!! Good for her. Did she ever decide on a dress?

As for DS's plan regarding asking his girlfriend to prom, after I went out and bought the posterboard and markers, he has another MORE EXPENSIVE idea on how he wants to ask her (something about spelling something out in flowers). Told him he would have to pay for that one; Mom had done her part in getting the other supplies and he could use them for free (hint, hint).

DS is sick today so he didn't do any asking or preparation today. But I expect that he'll do so sometime this week.

Yeah:woohoo: :woohoo: So glad to hear the date issue has been settled! Has the dress been settled yet.?
Unless Mr. Date lives under a rock he has to know that prom = formal tux attire, right?????

Thanks for the ideas on the expenses. I definately agree if DS was asking then what he pays for (ie... I pay for;) )is much clearer, it is this whole pairing off thing that has me thrown, especially since DS attends 2 formals a year and so far has done so only once with a true "date".

Pam: I can relate to the college expense thing - my DS informed me the other day that he wants to apply to Oregon State Univ. and with all the out of state tuition and living costs it is a little steep for our pocket book. We told him we would help, but that he was going to have to student loan a chunk(big) if that is where he really wants to go. Personally, I prefer he stick to UNR for a couple of years, he can live at home and he is ontrack for the $10K Millennium Scholarship the state of NV. began with the state's tobacco money. He is talking about going into medicine and IMO he/we need to save our bucks any way we can to get him the education he wants.

Sandy: Rats, he is sick, I was really waiting to see what he was up too. Keep us informed and I hope he feels better.

Glad all is well on the prom front..........Now, how is the weather:lmao: it be snowing here!

Sandy, your son is a ROMANTIC! Sorry he is  , hopefully back to normal soon...ha ha...teens...normal...:lmao: anyway....
tell him to stick with the poster idea as she can have it for a keepsake...maybe that will sway him? I have to say DD just blurted it out...no plan, she was actually kicking herself as she thought he deserved a better display, but I have seen some doosies...Hershey Kisses all over the floor...saying I'd Kiss the Ground you walk on if you'd go to Prom with me!"
Rose petals from the door up to the girls room and then balloons all over the room and they have to pop htem all to see who did the asking ( name would be inside one)
Video taped stuff, the car safe paint has been used and written on the girls/guys car....chalk drawings on driveways,
One thing I think is so cool is at DD's HS they have a boys chorus group or singers, and they will go and serenade a girl( or guy) and do the asking in the song for a $5 donation to the club...and they do it during any class..once a swim class during PE ws interupted!
so it can be a lot of fun to get creative...DD says it is more for the kids who are certain the amswer will be yes...DD was not sure at all that Art Guy would say yes, I said I was shocked she didn't even do a quick cartoon, drawing, anything...but when the moment hits, it hits!
Keep us posted, and no, DD has not decided on which dress...they are the Jessica McClintock line, since they make a size 1. 2 choices are Aquamarine and 1 is black/white polka dot and the other is green. The white one has been returned...was the one she like the least when she saw them all together. We have 90 days to return the others so she has time, other thanif she would like her date to match she should let him know what color!
I am partial to one of the Aquamarine ones...all are strapless again...go figure...but it is Organza material...very iridescent, sool...looks like a fish to me..fun but still pretty. DD does have a bit of a Goth side tho, so the black and white may be the choice, yet her fav color is green....(that's the most $$$ tho...way over budget by $75) The B/W one is $90, then the 2 Aqua are $150, and $160..then the green is $209 :scared1: DD knows she making up the difference on that one! Between that and Art Guys ticket...I think she may go with a less expensive choice!
I will do a search for pic's whe I get the chance!

Snow here too...Chicago...
Ohhh, a DOCTOR.....SWEET! Yep, college is unbelievable...DD may do Jr college for 2 years and then transfer over, but in Art, your studio courses start your freshman year, so she does run the risk of her 100 and 200 level not transfering if not on par...but man, Ringling is 43K a year...$172?????????:scared1: It is just not going to happen. Art Guys folks just sold their 2nd home in Florida...I imagine that is where some of the $$$ may be coming from. My DD just about fell over when she heard they sold their home...it is her dream to live in Florida working as an Animator for whoever wants to pay her...if it's WDW then fine, but she'll accept anything.
Well, gotta get dinner going...

Dinner? Really? What ya having????? I have to go freeze my tail off at a softball game! Which usually means scrambled eggs and toast when we get home since I didn't get anything in the crock pot this morning. DD was having a tooth brush drama meltdown moment and I ran out of time.

Anyway,
If ArtGuys parents are in FL, is their an in state vs. out of state tuition, I'm just curious since I assume it is a private college? My in-laws live in Bradenton and love the Ringling Museum I just love their circus! The 2 yrs at a Jr. college sound like what we keep saying to DS, "couple of years local and then you can transfer" who knows, OSU is not easy to get into and while DS is very bright, he is no 4.5 GPA in all A/P kinda guy. He is a 3.5 mostly A/P football playing goofy kinda guy!

That is cool all the things the kids do to "ask" I have heard nothing like that going on here. I love the room full of balloons and the boys chorus group, how fun......

Well kids, time to go get out the parka and boots - hope you all have a good evening.......

Art Guy lives here as do his folks ( Chicago) I think the Fl house was a second home, or maybe they lived there originally and then moved here and kept it?:confused3 Not sure...I know he told DD that he goes to FL all the time...I have only met the boy once when DD had a bonfire party at our house 2 weeks ago. It was cool tho as he brought a guitar and he can play just about anything..and he is self taught. He seems nice enough but a bit shy..but who knows...maybe they are jet-setters...I know he flew to FL over our spring break to check out Ringling and SCAD (Savannah Colllege of Art/Design...DD's second choice  ) but preffered Ringling. It is a smaller private college, mostly in 1 building/compound...but at least offers housing for students.
Oh, dinner was spinach fetucinni w/garlic shrimp and alfredo sauce. Can you believe I actually had all that in the house? I am like, a hot dogs and tater tots cook, or the crock pot as well. It is amazing what you can throw into oneof those and call it dinner!;) I hope you have thawed out! DS track meet was cancelled here today.....and then, when I left to pick up DD from work ( we HAVE to get another car) anyway, I was at a stop light and Gina Glockson from American Idol walks across the street RIGHT in front of my van! I was scrambling to get my cell phone to take a picture, but she was almost across so I honked and she turned anwaved. She was with her BF, our town gave her a key to the city today, there was to be a parade but the weather blew that. Anyway, it was WAY cool! She is very pretty and tiny...her hair looked so cool. DD was bummed that she missed her. They were heading to one of our local bars...if not for that shrimp needing to be cooked I would have thought about dropping in, but it was better to not bother her. She is planning on moving from here to LA...best of luck to her!

Pam

Good Morning, all. :goodvibes

DS is back to normal (for a teenager :) ) and made his posters last night to ask the girlfriend to prom. He put parts of his question on 4 different highly decorated posterboards: "Will you" "please go to" "PROM" "with me?!?!" and will place them on her car on all 4 sides this afternoon when she's playing in her soccer game. I'll let you know what the answer is - it HAD BETTER be yes or I don't know what will happen around here. He just brought home a $40-off coupon for his tuxedo rental, so that will help some.

Mamacatnv and Finfan - sorry about the snow and cold weather in your area. We're supposed to get hit as well tomorrow. They are talking up to A FOOT of snow. I hope they're wrong about that!!!

I need to get some dinner ideas from you guys. After almost 24 years of marriage, the "What's for dinner?" question is enough to make me pull my hair out. ;) I swear that if I lived by myself I would eat popcorn almost every night; I am so tired of cooking!!!

I can totally relate to the college costs discussion. Our DD goes to CU-Boulder; she has some very good out of state options but chose to stay closer to home. Paying in-state tuition has been a good thing. That's the only place DS wants to apply, so they'll both be at the same school, which I like. Simplifies things.

Have a good day everyone!!!

Glad your DS is feeling better...I like the poster idea...the girl will love it! DD said there were guys at school yesteday dressed in tuxes handing out coupons...y'know...if they get a bunch of people in to rent a tux then the the guys who dressed up will get a whopping 25% off of thiers..LOL! Hopefully Art Guy:artist: saw one of them..DD said they came into her Genetics class and Psych class...I am sure they were in the lunches.
Uggghh a FOOTof snow...we have flurries right now, but cold ugly grey skies. I need the :sunny:
Dinner ideas? From me???????/:lmao: Clearly you missed the part about me being a hot dog tater tot chef!
Crock pot all the way! Rumor has it eh McDonalds will be having 49/59 cent hamburger /cheeseburgers next week...that's how I do MY grocery shopping!

Pam

My meal planning is day-to-day. I have to pass the grocery store on my way home from work, so I'm there almost daily. I NEED to sit down and plan better. I'm on Weight Watchers right now, so I am trying to make "good" dinners that won't saboutage my efforts!!

Hopefully ArtGuy did get one of those tuxedo coupons - that WILL help!! Did your DD ever find out what the jerk's reaction was when he found out that she had a date to prom?

Mamacatnv, you must be in northern Nevada - can't see Vegas dealing with snow!!
