Hi, the 7 of us will be heading to WDW next month. My sister will be 7 months pregnant and was advised by her OB Doctor a few days ago to limit her walking due to High Blood Pressure and swollen ankles, so we decided that we would rent a wheelchair for each park day to keep her stress down.(also, so she don't slow us down either!! :lmao: )

Anyway, I believe i read somewhere that you get a discount to $8.00 per day (instead of $10) when renting Length of stay. Does this mean we get to bypass wheelchair/stroller line each morning and obtain the wheelchair immediately?? I never rent them but i have seen some LONG lines at times obtaining the W/C and Strollers in morning and i am not particular in the mood to deal with that every morning. :sad2:

How does this really work???

I thought about getting w/c offsite but my sister didn't want that..she only will used it for parks only throughout the day and wants to walk when going to back to hotel, resturants and transportation..

Thanks for any advice and tips!!

The length of stay wheelchairs work the same as length of stay strollers. In the 'regular' queue, people have to pay for their wheelchair/stroller and then get it. In a separate queue, the people with length of stay receipts just show their receipt and get the stroller or wheelchair.

I'd suggest you take along the numbers of several of the off-site rental places in case she changes her mind or has more problems with high BP and swelling than she thinks she will. Most of the resorts involve a lot of walking just to get around the resort, so just doing the walking she plans to do may still be more than the 'limit walking' the she is supposed to do.

also the park wheelchairs are the most uncomfortable things ever. she may be more comfortable if her OB can write a prescription for a rental from home, so she can put cushions on it and try it out. that will also give you a wheelchair in the airports. the orlando airport is huge and involves a couple minutes of balancing in a mini-monorail thing... there are seats, but you have to count on someone giving them to her, and there are not always courteous people out there...

the park wheelchairs can be very hard to push, as sometimes they veer off... you may want to look at renting one off-site down there...

Thanks so much for the replies...This is a BIG help!!

My sister has a hard time using the w/c at all since she is very independent and does not like people feeling sorry for her and felt the w/c should be used for only with people with more serious problems. We had to convinced her to utlized it for her health and baby reasons so we compromise that we would get w/c for parks only. She finally gave in when i said "besides you gonna slow all of us down" and that seem to have been the trick for her to accept it!!

PS i have a cushion pad that i will bring for her to sit on!!!

Why not have her rent an ECV from an offsite company instead? Then she will not be dependent on others, and she can do other things while people are on thrill rides, etc.

I would also recommend you rent her an ECV from an outside company. I hear the wheelchairs are so uncomfortable, her being pregnant, she would be miserable! Plus she can control the ECV, versus you guys pushing her everywhere

I rather push her than for her to be in ECV (she'll run over everyone!!! :rotfl:) but that a possiblity..

besides, we renting a minivan so it is not feasible to put the ECV into our van!!

Thanks so much for your assistance!! :goodvibes

If she likes to be in control, definitely look into the ECV. I cannot use one due to the position that it requires me to be in to operate it, but I HATE being pushed. It was fine at the beginning of my trip, but by the end I just hated not being in total control. I did get a little snippy a couple of times. ;) :rolleyes1 If I could use an ECV w/o it causing a lot of pain, I would grab it in a heartbeat.

If she decides to still go with a w/c definitely get a prescription from her doc like Kpeveler suggested. It will save you some money, more money for souvenirs. :yay: If she doesn't want to ride in it around the hotel, I am sure someone in your group would not mine "keeping it warm" for her. I know that everytime I got out of mine ds17 would jump in and take it for a ride. Having been to WDW pregnant, she will most likely appreciate having it the whole time. She just doesn't realize yet how much that extra weight is going to affect her stamina.

Either way, you all will have a great time.

Please ask her the following questions. Here are the suggested answers to go with them.

1. Are you disabled (even temporarily)? Yes.

2. Do the people you are traveling with, such as your family, know you are disabled? Yes.

3. Do you expect to meet anyone you know during this trip who may not know you are disabled. Probably No!

4. Do you expect to meet a bunch of people who you will probably never meet again in your life? Probably yes!

5. Is there any reason at all that you should care what these people think about you? Absolutely No!!

6. Will using a wheelchair or ECV make for a better vacation for you and your family? Absolutely YES!
