Legoland (Denmark) - how to get there from Copenhagen

Hi everyone! We are thinking about doing the following before our July 2016 Northern Europe cruise and wanted some advice from maybe people who have done this before or live in Denmark:

Fly from NYC to London, transfer to Copenhagen - then, rent a car at the airport and drive to Billund, Denmark to stay at Legoland.

Is that crazy/too much? We have two little kids - 6 and 4 - and we thought it might be easier to drive to Billund that evening than get to a hotel in Copenhagen and leave the next day. Any advice/thoughts? We are going to drive back to Copenhagen during a day and leisurely stop and see some towns/other sites (like Roskilde).

Note that Scandinavian Airlines has flights from Copenhagen to Billund (BLL) where the airport is right next to Legoland. The flight is roughly 25 minutes and would save you a drive of a couple of hours each way (domestic flights are very common in Denmark, I use them all the time myself). If you arrive in Copenhagen late in the day, you could stay at the Hilton (at the terminal) and walk over and take the flight the next morning. You can also drive, of course, but it sounds like a very long day for your kids. Legoland Hotel in Billund is also very nice, though it can be pricey.

On a related note, any suggestions on airport transfers to and from CPH? Thanks!

I was looking into going to Legoland, found out it is a 3 hour drive one way. Looked into a few ways, but it didn't work out. I would think it is easier to do what is called an open jaw itenerary, taking a plane to Billund. It does have an international airport. As I understand, the airport has an exclusive Lego set you can buy there.

We did this last summer, we flew to CPH and took a train to VeLje( sp) where we stayed the night - then we took a bus the next morning- we did the whole thing in one shot!

We hired a car from CPH airport upon arrival and drove to Billund, stayed for two nights at the LEGOLAND Hotel. Kids were 9 and 7 at that time. Took about 2.5 hours, but easy to navigate. No issues for us, but we have always been adventurous and are used to going our own way during holidays.
