Left over points?

So with all my careful planning on how to use my points we have been struck with the case of Addonitus. I will be getting an addtional 25 points for the '09 UY and will be left with about 3 extra points even if I add a day onto my trip in March. I will not be able to bank them as they would have already been banked into 2010 at time of purchase as I am past my banking window with an Oct UY(buying direct from Disney) While I don't have a real problem with losing these 3 points considering they are bonus points I am wondering if you all had any suggestions as to what I could do with my lonely 3 points.

TIA

If you have 2010 UY points as part of that March reservation, you should ask MS to reallocate the new banked 2009 points for that reservation and free up those 2010 points and this will allow you to bank those.

If the points are at a different home resort, and you booked that reservation during the home resort period, it might not work.

But, if they are all the same resort, this should not be a problem since MS is usually pretty good about this when you are in an add on situation. I know they will even do that with borrowed points if you add on after borrowing.

Good luck!

Should have given some bank ground info:
Bought Oct UY in March '10 with 100 points. As such we were given '09 points which I banked into '10. Now we want 25 points more and feel that now is the time to move on it so we will be given '09 points to bank into 2010 also. We will need 108 for my current March '11 trip which is in my '10 alloment time frame. If I add the extra day that will require a total of 122 points. So I will be able to bank my entire 2010 points into 2011 and still be able to travel in March using the extra points we were given as the incentive to buy. So this is why I asked for suggestions with those lonely 3 points. They will expire on Sept 30, 2011.

Again you could call MS and ask them to use all your 2009 pts for your upcoming trip and bank the balance for 2011 use year.

Are you purchasing the additional 25 pts from Disney or resale?

Call your Guide and have him/her adjust your points so you don't lose them.

Can they do that? I only thought they can get around the banking window. I didn't really want to add the day to my March trip as I don't want to pull DD 17 out of school and I don't get much vacation time and we hope to switch over to October vacations in 2011 so that would mean 2 trips in 1 vacation year but 2 UY's so the points would be there. How much power or flexiblity do the guides have? It would only be 13 points if I don't add the extra night...could they push them into the 2011 time frame given the circumstances of my not being able to use them in my 2010 year?

It all depends on your Guide. Some are lazy, others don't waste their time with service after the sale, others really do care.

I have had Guides, make reservations when there was no availability, re-allocate our points, and bank points after the deadline.

Its interesting...I don't really have any experience with this one. I discussed on and off with my original guide for about 2 years before I could get Dh to say yes. Then it was a whirl wind to get it done as my guide was due to have her baby about a week after the "lets finally do it" call. I waited a few months hoping that she would be back but I guess she decided to take more time than she originally planned with her precious new addition. So I have been speaking with her co-worker/friend. I haven't yet made the purchase just spoke to her Friday about options as I thought it was all sold out. Can I ask her to put the extra '09 points into the '10 UY with the ability to bank them into 2011?

Thanks for all your help Bill. It is much appreciated by this newbie.

This question seems to be complicated because you have not yet made the 25 point add on purchase. Once you have done that, you can have MS reallocate the points used for your booking so you can be banking current year points.

The problem is this....bought 100 points with '09 points given which I banked into 2010. Using 108 for week in March '11. With the add on which I just purchased today I will have 125- '09 pointsd banked. This is what will cause my extra point issue as I will have 13 points left over that will need to be used by Sept 30th, 2011. I will bank all of my 2010 points into the next year to cover the next trip. Our next trip isn't until Oct 10th, 2011 which will use the banked points from 2010 and dip into my Oct '11-Sept 12 allotment.

I really was looking for advice on what to do with those 13 points that will expire. I'm so new to this that I wanted to gather from the knowledge that all you experience DVC'ers have on the ins and outs of points.

You really have been given the advice you asked for. You just aren't understanding it.

So, to make sure I understand this - after your 25 point add-on, you will have 125 UY09 banked points and 125 UY10 points.

You only have 1 trip planned during the UY10 time window for 108 points. Assuming you have MS reallocate to use all UY09 points for that trip, it will leave 17 points (125 - 108 points) unplanned that cannot be banked to UY11.

Did I get all of that correct??

If so - I think your options are 1)stay somewhere that requires more points 2) stay longer 3) rent your points to someone (on your own or through the board sponser Davids Vacation Rentals)

I think some people are confusing the issue and thinking that you have used 2010 points that can be realllocated. It doesn't sound like you have. As far as using those 2009 points really they only things are to add another night or else upgrade the room size or category so your March stay will require more than 108 pts. That might mean using some of your 2010 points but maybe the 13 points would cover the change.

If you just don't think either of those work sometimes people are looking for just a couple extra points for transfer. You could also consider that rather than letting them expire if you don't have another trip planned before Oct 1, 2011. Or renting them. Personally - I'd try and upgrade the room size or view.

Thank you, yes this is exactly what I was trying to say. Just bought in!

I know that I will have extra points even if I add the day and wanted advice on how or what to do with them. Really hate for them to go to waste especially if there is something I can do with them.

Thanks so much

Thank you....I haven't used any point yet...just bought in March and with the '09 points I will always be working off last years point and banking current years points...at least until we retire. Love the studio with 2 queens at OKW while traveling with the kids so a 1 bedroom isn't a plus for us until we are traveling as a couple only which won't be a few years yet. Thanks for your help!

I would think you would want the 1 bedroom while the kids are with you. That huge kitchen and living room area is perfect for a family of 4, while the studios give you absolutely no privacy.

I was thinking the same thing that a 1BR with the kids would be very nice to have. In addition to what Diane mentioned you also have a washer/dryer in the unit. This might be a perfect time for you to try it out and see what you think. :thumbsup2

When the kids are 17 and 12 and are as big as you or bigger the 2 queen beds is a must! We have a car and do easy meals like sandwhiches for dinner cereal and toast for breakfast plus a few meals out since it is Mom's vacation too we really don't need a kitchen. Plus it means we can stay longer when we only use points for a studio. Really have no real plans to ever move up to a 1 bedroom. My other post I was thinking of studios at other resorts that have the pull out couch and mixed them up in my mind as a 1 bedroom. DH and I will be perfectly content in a studio as meals are simple and with the kids out of the picture we will have plenty of room. As far as privacy its never been an issue on vacation.

That's fair and maybe you decided on something else to do with the points but why not use the points and do the 1BR rather than let the them expire? At AKV Kidani all 1BR's will have both a sofa sleeper and a chair sleeper. Same with BLT and in the newly renovated OKW rooms. So that way you'd be getting 3 beds and more room. Nobody says you have to cook!! ;) Anyway - enjoy!
