Hi,
Okay, here it is...
Do I take the Bonnanine meds now, or wait to see if I need them? Is it too late then. We have a 22ft boat and I'm used to it and never have felt sick. I love amusement park rides also. Does this mean I'll be fine? Same for my son.
Any help quickly would be great!!!!
Jane

The TA that booked us suggested taking it the day before. I believe she said that once you are sick, it may be too late to take it.

Lori P. :)

I would not take them until you feel you need them....I took Ginger root tablets (herbal) when I felt a little sick the first night at dinner and was fine once I got my sea legs. They are natural and do not make you sleepy. The ship sells the "bands" if you need them - they are sweatbands and push against your pressure points. Two people in my family used them and they worked quite well. Have a great week!

We had six people in our group and my wife has a weak stomach, she can't do any rides at all. We took two boxes of Bonine with us, but never opened either box. They are still sealed in my cruise backpack.

I always take at least a 1/2 dose the night before. Then a full dose the next morning.

The first night is really the only time I get sick. I guess it takes time for me to get my sea legs.

Yes I have been told the same by several 'seasoned' cruisers... Take them the day before..... Happy sailing!

Is it just me or is my countdown clock moving real, real slow????

We are taking Bonine (Chewables) but plan only to use it as a backup as we have never been sea sick before. We tried it before hand to make sure there were no ill effects for DS6 and ourselves (A recommendation I received on this forum). If you are susceptible to motion sickness, then I believe it is recommended you take some the day before. - Mike

My countdowm clock seems to be moving slower as well

We take them at LEAST the day before we leave, take them every morning throughout and then for 2-3 days after returning home just to help us get our "land-legs" back.

I'd rather take a pill once a day than risk being sick as a dog but that's my own preference as I have been sick on a cruise for 3 days and it stunk.

You could wait however just keep one with you at all times and if you start feeling the least bit crummy take it. It might take a little longer to take effect but it will eventually help you! If you do get crummy feeling go up on deck and watch the horizon, get some fresh air and drink some ginger ale or sprite.

Have a great time!

Thanks so much for the helpful info!!
This is how I feel:bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc
Can't wait to be on the ship. "warming up" sounds so good to this Jersey girl who is so SICK of the weather.
Will send reports!!!
CIAO!!!

I am very quesy on boats and I have learned to wait b/c sometimes the medications make me so drousy that I lose a day of sailing getting over the meds. I was totally fine last summer - don't take unless you have to! Have a wonderful cruise!!!

I have also heard from others who suffer seasickness to try to keep your stomach full at all times. Somehow this tends to minamize the movement you feel. Therefore, I decided to err on the side of caution and ate everything I could get my hands on! I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but I had absolutly no seasickness. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

I had the same experience as those who gave advice to feiste. As long as I had a little something in my belly all the time, I was fine. But I never felt truly "sick" just a little uneasy a few times. So I'm not sure if it would help those who get really, truly, yucky, all-out sick.

But hey, it was a great excuse to get room service at 3:00 a.m.!

I did not think I would get sick, having grown up on the coast, been on boats, etc.

So I did not take anything prior to sailing.

I missed a very nice meal at Triton's because I had to go back to the cabin, take meds and lie down.

My Mom applied the patch the night before we left. She was afraid she'd be ill for the flight and the doctor said they would definitely kick in on time for the cruise.

I just went to an ENT this week to ask about seasickness.
She asked if

1. If I could read in a car for a long length of time. My answer was not very long before I felt queasy.

2. If I got woosy on rides that go in circles. My answere was I did get a bit woosy.

She said based on that she felt my equiliberum was a little fragile. So she perscribed the patch.

So if you answere yes to those you may want to consider taking a preventive dose of something.

DH doesn't have problems with any of those things so we are bringing something he can take in case we have rough seas. I have read that a recent cruise did have rough seas and they were handing out seasickness bags.

If this is a concern for anyone, I would suggest calling your doctor and asking his/her recomendations. After the amount of planning and money we all spend on these trips it would be a shame if anyone needlessly missed a second of fun.

Just wanted to add that I'm very prone to motion sickness; I get nauseaous just thinking about reading in the car (never mind actually doing it!) and I can't do roller coasters at all (just typing this makes me a little queasy!).

But when I was on the Wonder in Jan and Oct of 2002, I didn't have to take any medication at all. I didn't feel queasy or sick at all.

Hope you have a great cruise!

On our last cruise, a year ago this month, I had no problem with sea sickness, and I usually get car sick. The seas were pretty calm and the ship is great.

The problem that I found was I was still rocking for several days AFTER the cruise. This did not seem unusual as several other people reported these symptoms on the Disboards. It lasted for quite a while after the cruise so you might want to save some bonine for after the cruise.
I hope this doesn't happen a lot. Anyway, needless to say this is not stopping me from going again on May 1st !!:Pinkbounc

Have a great time.

Bonine only lasts 24 hours, so taking a day before really doesn't help anything. I would take one first thing the morning of the day you cruise so it would be in your system by the time you went onboard, then you might want to take for a day or two (getting those sea legs) then delay the 4th or 5th dose, carefully noting to see if you have any queasiness.

Or, you could take each and every day. I didn't feel that I had the slightest side effects from Bonine and did not want to chance being sick, since the consensus is that it takes entirely too long to get well after becoming nauseated.

The patch, in my limited experience, is a whole 'nother story altogether. Every single person I know (more than a dozen, easily) who used it had side effects, some fairly mild, but most enough to complain. Lots of vision complaints in particular. I think the patch would be my last choice, after trying every other option. JMHO......good luck!

amtmommy---I think it's great you talked to your doc about options but PLEASE try the patch out at home before you leave! The side effects are horrible if you are allergic to scopolamine (I was and had NO idea I was) and I spent 3 days in my cabin sick as a dog! I had a severe headache like a migraine but about 10 times worse, my pupils were dilated huge, dizzy, light headed, sick to my stomach, vomiting, ringing in my ears. I ended up with a $175.00 infirmary bill, 2 anti-nausea shots, a bunch of meclizine and 3 days wasted in my cabin of my 7 day cruise! If the patch works for people it usually works really well but if it doesn't oh boy..it is miserable! I just don't want to have anyone go through what I went through. My dh went through the same kind of thing though not nearly as severe as me but it was awful!~

Meclizine aka Bonine, Dramamine Less Drowsy is basically just like Benadryl (antihistamine)so if you can tolerate Benadryl you will be ok on those drugs.

I just wanted to put out that warning about the patch. Some people have great luck on it and I am very glad but please please please try one out before you leave so you don't suffer the same consequences that I did. Also if you go to
http://www.transdermscop.com/site2/view-insert.html
it has all of the side effects and warnings on it just to be informed.

I agree with FredS about the Bonine and the patch!
