Leaving pets when your away

Our 1 year old labradoodle stays at a local kennel where he can run & play all day with other puppies, during our trips to WDW.

We have a chihuahua named Pepe. He'll be staying with a co-worker of the boyfriends. He's stayed there before for a few days and didn't have any problems.

Ugh!!! The worst part of going on vaca!!! We have left my beautiful, 'baby' 8 year old German Sherpard at a wonderful Kennel when DM and DD have come on vacation w/us. I have in recent years, pay to fly my niece here and stay with him ( she use to live w/us) since what I spend at the Kennel and the extra walks/playtime would be what I spend to fly her in. He is happy in his own home (he's a homebody). We get to be away and not worry how sad he might be in a 'strange' though nice place.

We have a cat who is almost 17 years old and a dog who is almost 4 years old that we leave behind when we travel to WDW.

Unfortunately we do not any extended family to count on to take care of our two furbabies, so we rely on our vet. The folks at our vet's love our pets and take really good care of them while we're gone.

I'm just glad we have them!

My 2 1/2 yr old yellow lab "Kirby" (hence, the user name!) stays at a wonderful place that he goes to regularly for doggie daycare. They also do boarding. He absolutely loves it! He has many friends there, both canine and human. It's also reassuring because he has epilepsy and the vet is right down the street and they all know each other, so if there's an emergency, I know he's in great hands. To be honest, I don't think he misses us because he is so happy there, and is used to the routine of being there. As long as he has food and someone to play with, he's good to go!

Years ago we left our dog "Junk" at the kennel, when we picked him up he had rubbed his nose raw on his cage. Since then we get a house sitter, usually our son but if he can't do it or is with us then a good friend.

We are just back from a 10 day trip and our lab "blue" didn't even seem like he missed us.

Our 1 1/2 year old bichon frise Nick goes to stay with his "other Grandma" the breeder we bought him from! She has 2 bichons of her own and a DOG DOOR! We don't have a dog door and he thinks it's the coolest thing ever. And all the bichons running and tumbling across the yard like a giant white whirling dervish!! Too funny! He's always really glad to see us come back home though.

We have two female Samoyeds, Klondike and Snow, 70 lbs. each, . Then add two female calico cats, Pixel and Patch, and we have a lot of animals.

I have two dogs-ones a standard poodle and one is a male Samoyed and we also have 2 calico cats.

We are away for three weeks and have a pet sitter coming to the house for some of the time once a day and someone else is house/petsitting for the majority of the time.

We have a lil yorkie named Rex and I hate leaving him behind.Does anyone have a pet they leave behind and with whom.Rex stays home and Grandma comes here

We have a 14yr old Lhasa named Spanky and we do the exact same thing. My mom moves into our house while we are in WDW. Spanky is so use to his own home he hates to be left anywhere else.

My 5 year old cocker spaniel, Bailey, is really shy with strangers, so a kennel is out of the question. Our WDW vacations always include the "KIDS" who are all now in their mid twenties, so there is no one left to take care of Bailey(belle).

We have my DD's best friend house/pet sit for us. I pay her $25 per day, a full fridge, and full use of the 61" HD TV with every channel known to man. Bailey has known her since she was a puppy and is very glad to be at home.

We have a 5 year old King Cavalier Spaniel Mix and a 7 year old cat.

The cat stays home and the neighbors son comes over to make sure he has plenty of food and water and plays with him.

Our dog goes to the kennel at her vets where she participates in Small Dog Daycare that she just loves to do. They take care of her very well.

I do miss our dog (the cat drives me nuts - leaves us nasty presents when he gets mad) but I like having a vacation away from pets too.

I think it would be different if I didn't know that they were well taken care of while we were gone but we come back and they are spoiled rotten, well and happy to see us and I know they are safe.

We've got 3 trips coming up over the summer and early fall so I bet the pets won't be happy with us when we are finished with the trips. Guess I'd better stock up on Nature's Miracle for cats and dogs.

Oh, I love Nature's Miracle! Not only is it great for the wonderful presents the cat leaves us, but also for stains on the kids clothes - I haven't found anything it won't get out!

Back to the topic, though, we have an 8 year old yellow lab and an 11 year old cat. Usually, we leave the dog with one member of DH's family or another, they are all usually pretty good about it. The cat typically stays at home, with his self-feeders and other stashes of water dishes throughout hte house. Once we were gone 10 days, and a friend came and checked on him and played with him every couple of days, but the really great time was when we went to Russia for 3 weeks to adopt our boys 2 years ago - he drove my poor SIL crazy! They tried to take him to their place, but he would cry all night long, pee in the laundry baskets, I vaguely remember something about him getting stuck somewhere...They ended up bringing him back to our place and coming to visit every couple of days. Boy, was he upset with us when we finally got home - and with a new 1 1/2 year old and 4 year old boys, to boot!

we are leaving our doggie here at home for our trip. My cousin is going to stay with her. Last year we sent her to a kennel and they never let her out , so this year I aksed my cousin to stay with her.

We have 3 cats that we leave home with a sitter who visits daily. They are the reason we want to come home regardless on how much we don't want to leave WDW. We asked them if they wanted to come along, but they protested against the car and plane rides. Oh well.

We have a cat. We took him to DH's grandparents house when we went on our honeymoon. We went to TN for a week and just had a nearby relative come and feed him every other day. When we are only gone a few days we just leave him extra food. Not sure what we are going to do this time around? I know it is easier with a cat though since they don't have to be let out and walked and all that.

We also will have to leave my little maltese Lexie, we left her at the 4 Seasons pet resort when she was just 6 mos old but she hasn't been left since and we will be leaving her again in May and Nov she is now 3 I was hoping Nana would take her but they are getting up in years. Hopefully she will have fun at her pet motel, and not think we deserted her. I wish I could take her with us.

I have the answer to all your pet separation anxiety...Fort Wilderness Campground ! You can bring your fur babies with you.

That being said, we have seven Siamese cats, the youngest two travel with us. The other five are usually taken care of by DSisterIL . But since the whole clan is coming down for a Grand Gathering this year, our best friend is taking the responsibility.

We have had my sister house/dog sit when we leave... we added a new puppy to our family in December, so she will have her hands full with our three:

Buddy (3 year old Lab)
Rambo (2 year old Yorkie/Jack Russell mix)
Chewy (6 month old mutt)

Plus- she will be bringing her own, Sadie, who is Chewy's sister.

I'd love to stash a camera to see how complicated things will be for her with all these critters!

This is always the hardest part for us - we have two miniature schnauzers that are literally part of our family and are spoiled rotten. We have a wonderful neighbor who comes up 4 to 5 times a day to visit with them, feed them and let them in the fence to run. She has two big dogs of her own and my two love her! The last trip we came home to our leather sofa chewed up and she felt terrible adn responsible for it but we told her over and over again it was our own fault (mostly mine) for not treating them like dogs and letting them get away with all they do.

As the previous poster wrote, that is the worst part of our trip to WDW-- taking our spoiled rotten but much loved Shih Tzu, Rocky, to stay at the vets while we are away. He is very much attached to me, and I to him, so I wear a T-Shirt for a couple of hours, then place that over the pillow he carries with him to the vet. That way he know Daddy hasn't forgotten about him and will be coming back.

When we got Rocky, he was to be our son's pet, but guess who got to take him outside, feed and bathe him and who he feels the most connected to?
