leaving food for housekeeping?

We order groceries and fix breakfasts and a few dinners in our villas. We always have some food left over before we leave, and since we flew last vacation, can't take it home. I left it in the refrigerator or on the counter so housekeeping can decide whether to throw it away or take it home. Does anyone else do this? Do housekeepers appreciate that? Are they allowed to take it home?

Offically, all food items are disposed of by housekeeping, opened or not.

A Bell Servicer told us that mouse keeping can keep whatever is left. He said the college program kids really appreciate the left behind stuff.

I leave unopened dry goods for mousekeeping with a note. I leave them in a bag so if they want to take them they can or if they need to throw them away then it is easy to do. Everything else is thrown away. I always wished there was a good way of sharing some of our unopened perishables/frozen items with someone else when we check out. We have gotten much better with planning our food purchases but we always end up with some things leftover. Seems such a shame to waste them but there aren't really any alternatives.

When we have unopened items, we leave a note near the items that says "Free, please Help Yourself". We toss everything that has been opened or take it with us when we go.

I leave a nice tip, figuring that cash is even more appreciated. But, I also confess that I don't necessarily get around to throwing away all of the food before I manage to check out, and that's partly why I leave the nice tip.

We typically have water left, so I leave unopened bottles in the fridge, that way they are already cold for them.

I wrote an email to Member Services about tipping and leftover stuff. Here is the response I got:

That is so helpful to know. We are pretty good about taking all the food out, and planning well, but it is nice to know that we can leave upopen items (cans) there. Thank you!

Ocassionally, I'll find hidden items that housekeeping has over looked, a stick of butter, etc...

Jean - Thanks for checking on that. It is great to know that housekeeping can keep food if they choose to do so :thumbsup2

I am sure that the Mousekeepers keep and take what they want. If you are around the rooms after people have checked out, you will often see the left overs on the Mousekeeping carts. You can also see the Mousekeepers walking to the parking lot after shift with bags of stuff.

One of the best people watching views I ever had at BCV was the courtyard. Every single day, I'd watch the mouse keepers walk out with several brown bags of leftovers with them:thumbsup2. What a nice perk of the job!! Can you imagine the freebies they go home with every day? Good for them, they work hard for it.

Nice that there's even an official policy. Thanks, Jean. I'm going to keep leaving my stuff there, even the open stuff, just leave it so they can easily throw it away if they don't want it.

What I do is walk over to check-in and give them to a family checking in.
Other's have done this to us and over the years we have been given beer, water, chips, and sodas. All of course were unopened.

In the past, the Bell staff at OKW would accept unopened food items and take them to a local food bank. I don't know if they still do that, but it was a nice gesture that potentially helped many people without other means.

I'd consider asking the Bell Staff if their resort has any similar program.

I'd rather see them make a coordinated effort to donate all the unopened food to a local food bank for people who really need it. Just sayin'

Yuck. Why would they want your leftovers?
