Hi~I am trying to "indoctrinate" my almost 3 yo into my love of Disney :) before we go in August. So far she's seen Peter Pan (her favorite), Tangled, and Monsters, Inc. She doesn't like the "scary" parts (although I know we can fast forward through them). I am thinking of renting ones like Lion King 1/2 or Ariel's Beginnigs at the library (thinking maybe less scary parts?) and have some old school Mickey Mouse, but was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on some of the less scary movies. Are there scary parts in Toy Story (I don't remember there being ones but I had completely forgotten the scary part of Monsters, Inc.). I feel like Cinderella isn't too scary (at least compared to like Sleeping Beauty :) ) and also Finding Nemo...Sorry for rambling! Thoughts???

Aladdin
The Emperor's New Groove
Lady and the Tramp
Mary Poppins

My DD (7) was sensitive to the "scary" parts when she was little. Cinderella was the best and involved no fast forwarding of anything. Cinderella and Peter Pan were her absolute favorites at that age. Cinderella II is also a good one as it doesn't have any scary parts at all. DD absolutely loved that one at that age. Cinderella III is actually a pretty good movie, but parts of it scared her when she was little She was also a huge Aladdin fan at 3 (still is), but it required fast forwarding in some spots.

If you rent Ariel's Beginning, you will probably want to fast foward through a section of the 1st part (think the beginning of Finding Nemo).

101 Dalmatians and the Aristocats are another couple not mentioned that aren't really scary.

Fair warning w/ Ariel's Beginnings - there's a significant portion of the movie about her mom dying.

Toy Story - Sid the mean neighbor kid takes toys apart and reassembles them into mutant toys. Toy Story 2 is actually less scary.

Some choices w/out a scare factor:

The Aristocats
Cars
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
Winnie the Pooh
Robin Hood - fairly tame, some scenes w/ fire and arrows toward the end, but not much in comparison to other films.

I like the Winnie The Pooh choice. they are very gently and age apporiate for a 3 year old.

We have the same problem I our house. Winnie the Pooh is always a good choice. If you can get a hold of Fun and Fancy Free, my kids love it, it's Mickey and the Beanstalk.
Snow White actually was good, the only "scary" moment was the woods, and I just kept saying oh is that real or her imagination (don't know if that would work at 3).
Cinderella 1/2/3
Any of the Fairy movies.
Three Cabelleros
mary poppins
also at the library we found 2 mickey mouse club dvds. they loved them.

what didn't work for us: aladdin - jafar's big scene is "very scary"
olive & company. too many parts to count
we haven't seen toy story but i think it will be too scary

As others have suggested, think old school:

Cinderella
Aristocats
Winnie the Pooh
Mickey Mouse classics and Clubhouse
Peter Pan

Progress to
Sleeping Beauty
Snow White
Alice in Wonderland
101 Dalmatians
The Rescuers

Then more modern ones
Hercules
Little Mermaid
Toy Story 2 (I wouldn't do 1 or 3)

When my DS was 3, Lion King and Aladdin still scared him.

My 3yr old is watching Pooh's Heffalump Movie. It doesn't have any scary parts and I'll admit it, I love that little British heffalump.

What helped my son was reading instead of watching. We'd get the books at the library and read them a few times before moving onto the movies. That way, he was already somewhat prepared for the scary parts (and knew how it ended).

We actually still do it. He's 5 and won't watch the lion king yet.

Thanks for all the replies! The information on A.B. is helpful. I didn't even think of Pooh but I'm sure she would love it and all the other great selections!

BTW, I thought in Sleeping Beauty the prince had to go through the brambles and then there was a fire breathing dragon. Am I joining movies???

You are absolutely correct. He is captured by Maleificent and locked away in her dungeon..he fights goblins/demons/brambles and M turned into a dragon.

Cinderella is relatively tame. The evil stepmother is mean, mean, mean..but she doesn't literally breathe fire ;)

I thought Snow White was pretty scary. Lots of scenes with the wicked queen are seriously creepy - esp. the whole sequence w/ her transforming into the old hag.

Whew! I was pretty sure :) I loved that part when I was younger. It's funny though because I was watching those movies at much older .... like 6, 7, 8 . Feels like the princess thing gets younger and younger.

I have 3 VERY sensitive girls! We love Disney but not so much the movies because they are super sensitive
(ages 6, 9, 10!)
They like

Winnie the Pooh (and any others from that line, Tigger movie, Piglet movie)
Dumbo
Cinderella
Cars
All the Tinkerbell movies (lost treasure is a bit scary they have now said haha)
Ratatouille
Toy Story 2 (not 1 or 3)
Emperors New Groove (they do say the kill a lot though)
Mary Poppins
Any Mickey movie (holiday mickey movie)

:) Hope that helps!

DS#1 gets scared very easily in movies. Peter Pan and Mary Poppins are huge favorites of his. He loves old school Pluto and Chip and Dale cartoons. Have a wonderful trip!
