Hi, we are planning to get DD the Leappad 2 for her 4th birthday in October. I got an e-mail about pre-ordering but there doesn't seem to be a good reason for doing so...I do know this was the "hot toy" last year but I was wondering if anyone has heard about discounts or bundles for this? If not, do you think it's worth pre-ordering or waiting till closer to the actual date in case they put out incentives once it's actually released (I believe it is supposed to start shipping in early August).

One thing I don't love about the bundles on Leapfrog's website is that they choose the two games you get...has anyone tried to request a different game instead? I know DD would like BRAVE but the fairies one, not so much...

Thanks for any thoughts on this!

I think the incentive about preordering is simply to actually get your hands on one when its released in case of a sellout of the first batch they put out. There were several sites that you could pre order from amazon, tru, walmart etc. instead of just leapfrog.

You could order just the leappad2 off the other sites without having it in a bundle. I would highly doubt that there will be any discounts/incentive when its released as I haven't seen much for discounts on the original leappad.

They are coming out with a disney princess edition towards the end of August that will only be availabe in a bundle and no preorder. The bundle for this does not include games according to what they have posted on their facebook site. It includes a disney princess case and I forget what else was included.

Thanks! I tried searching for info about the Disney Princess unit with no luck...where did you hear about that, if you don't mind me asking?

I think we will look into pre-ordering and then add accessories we choose...the bundles seem like a so-so deal (for instance, they include rechargeable batteries with a wall unit and we can most likely get a "deal" on that)...

Anyone else? :)

I heard about the Disney Princess Bundle on the Leapfrog Facebook fan page. I searched high and low for info on it also and couldn't find anything that I finally asked about it on the leapfrog facebook page and they responded

LeapFrog Hello Ashley! The bundle will include a Princess LeapPad2, Disney Princess carrying case, 2 decorative Disney Princess sticker sheets and 7 Disney Princess wallpapers. Stay tuned for more updates!

another person linked me to this youtube video that shows what it actually looks like

So if you have facebook I suggest you like the leapfrog page to know when it becomes available. Not sure what the price is going to be for that bundle but it doesn't seem as intensive as the other bundles they had on their website.

The original leap pad was sold out everywhere. Unless you preordered you were pretty much stuck paying entirely too much on eBay from the people who did preorder. Not sure if this year will be as hyped and hard to find

While the leappad did sell out it is not as if they shipped only 1 shipment. Stores were regularly getting shipments and if you did your due diligence you could find one. Also, there are web alerts that you can sign up for to notify when an hard to find item is in stock online. I ended up getting DS4's about 2 weeks before Christmas which was fine because it was for Christmas. YMMV, but I refuse to pay more than the going rate for anything so I never even think about ebay for hard to find/out of stock things.

I am getting my DD the disney princess bundle (the one with the disney princess case/disney stickers/disney world castle etched on the leappad2)but for Christmas so I am going to wait it out. Maybe if her birthday was in Aug/Sept it may be worth it to pre-order but if its not till October, im sure they would have more. I guess it depends if you want to wait it out?

I do not know if the LeapPad2 will be as popular as the 1, but if you really want this, you should pre-order. When the first version came out, it was pretty much sold out at stores by October. They don't offer incentives for hot toys; they don't need to.

I believe they will still be selling the original unit...right now its the same price as the second and both use the same games

My 3 year daughter is currently using her older sister's Leapser. Is it worth it to upgrade? What is the difference? We have spent so much on Leapster games that I would hate to have to buy all different ones. What are your thoughts on sticking with the Leapster or upgrading to the Leap Pad 2? Thanks

To go from Leapster to LeapPad, you would need to buy all new games. They are not compatible with each other. The new LeapPad/Explorer have much better graphics, you can use your finger instead of the stylus, the Leappad has a camera in it and the ability to download games/apps from the Leapfrog app store to it. You can also use your finger instead of the stylus on the screen. The Leappad screen is a lot bigger than the leapster screen.

Only you can decide if it is worth the expense to upgrade. It does have more features and do more things, but it isn't a cheap thing to upgrade since you would have to buy all new games.

I found one easily in late October of last year at Barnes & Noble. I had a 40% off of any one item at B&N (got it in an email), so I was able to buy the Leap Pad for $60.00. I use it in my classroom. The games and apps aren't cheap and sometimes I wondered if I'd have been better off buying a refurbished Nook Color for around the same price and rooting it to a droid. The screen size on the Leappad one was a bit too small when using the stylus for a couple of my younger students. The princess one is intriguing since I have some little girls who live & breath princess stuff, but I'm not sure and may just get a Nook Color instead. Still deciding.

You can use Leapfrog Explorer games in the LeapPad.

It was hard to get the LeapPad last year, because there was an issue with the manufacturing plant. Once the issue was resolved, they started shipping. This is unlikely to happen again.

Talked to DH and DS #1 will more than likely get this for his 4th birthday. We realized that the Leappad is cheaper than a party and a gift. ;)
