LCD or DLP??????

We are looking to buy a new HDTV for the living room size 40" - 60".

I've looked at LCD's up to 52" and a DLP at 60".

So which type would you purchase and why? Also which brand?

I went with the Aquos LCD because the picture quality was AMAZING. And LCD works better for my family.

If you're putting the tv in a regular room with regular light, LCD is the way to go. If you're putting the tv in a viewing room with low light, DLP would work well for you. I used this diagram to figure out which to get for our family. Maybe it'll help you too. It's kind of big so I'll just post a link to it.

We ended up with a plasma; mainly because we could afford that TV...but also because we have small children in the house and there is a VERY good chance they are going to touch the screen. So if you will have little fingers leaving marks the plasma's are a bit tougher and easier to clean.

I used to be a big proponent of DLP. It was a great technology. However, over the past two years, LCD has come down in price quite a bit, so much so, now, that I'd recommend LCD over DLP, for anything under 50". Over 50" DLP is still a great option, if you have the space for it.

And I wouldn't write plasma off, just yet. It did look like it was on its way out, but it is enjoying a much slower departure from the marketplace than original expected, and for good reason. It's still the best for certain applications, i.e., a room subject to lots of light infiltration, at times.

Do yourself a favor, though: Buy either Samsung or Sony. They're, far and away, the highest quality and most reliable brands, today, by a wide margin, according to practically all independent testing.

Just traded our 50" DLP (2003 Sony) for a Samsung 52" LCD

YESTERDAY....

The picture is phenomenal and the difference is extreme - I feeling like I am sitting too close to the screen. We got the 50K black which creates major contrast. It is going to take me a few days to get used to the change.

With LCD, if it is a so-so picture, the problems are magnified, if it's a good picture it looks great.

We have Comcast digital cable box connected with HDMI cables and a separate home theatre sound system

We made the change because with HD channel swe were getting so much pixel chatter with the 720 (especially football) and wanted to move up to 1080. Plus there were some color changes in the DLP indicating the bulb may be dying (about $100 to replace)

The LCD screen is very shiny so it picks up reflections from windows, xmas tree etc. The LCD has a better picture from oblique angles so if you are set up like a living room (we are) rather than a home theatre, get the LCD.

We are still trying to get the picture aspect tuned in correctly, there must be something automatic that we haven't discovered. As usual, the manual is next to useless!

That is a very good point.... I really like the idea of the 60" DLP but the space may be too small so the 50" LCD might be a better option

I need to figure out what to do so that I'm ready for the Super Bowl week sales
