I've started this 2-page spread of back-to-school pictures, but it just isn't quite right yet. The background paper I had seemed too busy, so I added a plain piece over part of the page, but it needs something more - a title, course, but what else? The photos are not glued down yet, so they can still be moved around.

Any suggestions?

What about trying 2 solid sheets of red 12x12 as your base. Take the printed paper and either tear or cut 2to3 inch vertical strips --use these two strips as borders on the far right and far left of your layout.

How about using a neutral color instead of the red solid paper? With all the bright colors and a kinda busy backgound paper I think it could use a neutral to give the eye a restful place. You could also cut out a few of those cute shapes on the background paper to use as an embellishment on a journaling block or mounted on squares. No one would know you cut them out if there is a photo mat or a solid piece of paper over it.

OK let's try this again. I tried posting before typed everything I wanted to say then realized my keyboard was not working so I had to reboot.

I like the busy school paper but you are right it is to much. What if you used black instead of red? Use the red as maybe 1/4" strip on the top and bottom of the black them the red to break the black and black busy pattern up (also brings in the red). Then use red and black as the title
I would use black letters with red shadow for the letters. As for the matting I would do a very thin mat yellow or red. For journaling I would use red with thin yellow mat.

Hope that helps

I would switch it up and use the yellow as the background paper and red as the picture background - they get lost with the yellow background I think.

On the first page I would put the two horizontal pictures of the bus stop on the left side (top & bottom) and the vertical picture of the backpacks (?) to the right of them.

On the second page I would put the 3rd grade picture on the bottom right and then put the picture of your son (?) on the top left of that page with your journal block underneath.

Just another idea... :)

Or you could use a green(but not a bright green) as the second color, like the green in the base paper. Then you could use the red for an apple journal box and for the mats.
I think the problem it to many bright colors, the eye doesn't know where to go.

Keep you title simple too, like a big 3 or something since the 3rd grade chalkboard is so noticeable it works as a title.

How's this looking?

(The tip of the cut-out pencil is where the list of kids names "chalked" on the black will end.)

Thank you all for the great suggestions!!

I liked them both, but I love the revised LO. Great job!

I never think to use the printed paper vertically, I'll have to remember that!

Plus, the way the pattern paper was used in the first one, my eye didn't really pick out the individual element on it, but the way you have it arranged in the second one, it's clear to me there is a bus, an apple and scissors which are part of the 'school story'. It's like your new design "organized it". (Must go play with patterned paper now . . .)

Interesting how you could totalling turn that layout around. I usually get stuck with one sketch and have a hard time rethinking it.

Great job! :thumbsup2

Thanks, everyone, for all the help and all the nice compliments on the new one! I think I'm finally ready to glue it down.

I think the black "cooled" the layout down to the perfect tone.

You did a great job on revamping it :)
Keep up the great work

Looks great!

This was kind of fun...could be a good challenege thread, "Fix my Layout"
