This concept has really fallen by the wayside, since Walmart did away with it a few years ago, but seems to be making a big comeback this year at KMarts. Some local places even offer it.

I know when Walmart had it, DH and I used it ALLL the time. We were pretty bummed when it went away. I hold out hope that it will return. There is only 1 Kmart in the area, and it isnt very good, but at least its something.

So have you used, or do you use layaway?

I was going to use it to hide DH's big christmas present this year (I fear he is a peeker!)

But I ended up finding a great deal on Amazon.

Oh well.
I like the idea, though!

I have never used it. Is the point of it that you can pay it off a little at a time instead of using a credit card? :confused3

However, I had a neighbor who had a great idea for Christmas shopping when her kids were small. She would buy all her toys at whatever store had layaway, then put them on layaway till right before Christmas. Then it was only a short time when she had to keep the kids away from the garage or wherever she stored the toys! And she made sure she got what she needed by buying in advance. I thought that was pretty smart! :thumbsup2

Edited to ask, is there a charge for using layaway?

I have a KMart right down the road. And have used it 3 times this year. With the 5.00 fee you have to consider what and how much you do put on layaway at 1 time. It's worth it when you put multiple things at one time on sale or clearance on layaway. With the 5.00 fee, 1 thing one sale might not make a difference when put on layaway.

This year I'm really missing it at Wal-Mart. We don't have any K-Marts around here. I sure could use it if I could find it.

I heard a rumor that Target was going to have it this year....anybody know for sure?

Yes, Kmart charges a fee..

I always enjoyed that good feeling of buying something big, and having it fully payed off when we picked it up. It was worth the fee in my opinion, and what I would pay in interest on a CC makes it also worthwhile..

I would LOVE if Target had Layaway!!

DW Lauri used it a lot when she worked for Hallmark. We will probably continue using it every year for Ornament Premiere

No, I don't use layaway. I don't need another errand to run (making a payment on my layaway, putting the layaway in, taking it out, etc). If I don't have the money right away..well, I am an American! I just charge it or pull the money out of savings! :lmao: That's what us Americans do...:rotfl: :rolleyes1

Since Wal-Mart and Meijer did way with their layaway, for Christmas we do almost no layway any more. DH will still put things in layaway for me at Fashion Bug.

And the down side for Wal-Mart and Meijer not having their layaway any more, is we spend just about 1/3 of what we use to there. Someone didn't think about that bottom line. I know LOTS of people who, don't have charge cards and can't afford to just drop 100's of dollars at one time, but could pay a set amount every week. The Kmart near us had to increase it's layaway storage space because of the increase in using the service.

I never have and I cannot see me ever using layaway. I buy a little here and a little there over the course of a year so we really do not feel a big sting all at once anyway. If it is a big ticket item we just buy it when we have the money.

I did at Playco one year. I bought the biggest little tikes playhouse you can imagine, the thing was flipping huge. I had nowhere to store it. My husband picked it up on Christmas eve and it barely fit in the bed of his truck. We had to bring it in the house piece by piece and then assemble it.

The term "layaway" gives me the chills.

I remember several years ago, a local store had a layaway program and people thought it was great....until a few days before Christmas when it was time to pick their stuff up....and their stuff was gone or misplaced.

The store had a completely unorganized layaway system, and most of the goods ended up back on the salesfloor, sold to other customers, or the box of layaway goods ended up being store in some random part of their stock room, essentially misplaced. What a nightmare. I know two people who had their entire layaway disappear - which was only discovered when they were at the store to make their final payment :scared1:

The store has since closed

I plan on using it this year. Not because of the pay a little at a time thing but having the stuff stored some place else until I really need it. The kids are getting old enough to know if there are presents in the house there is only ONE place I can put them... the basement.. they are sneaky they'd find them before christmas..

We would use it if they still had it at Wal-Mart. Unfortunately the only place that still has it around here is K-Mart and we never go there cause its ghetto.

growing up that's how everyone got stuff - layaway!

i even used layaway at bradlees in the 80s, for DS toys....

When K-Mart had free layaway my son would use it for the bigger toys he wanted, he was pretty young(7).
He would take his $5 allowance and pay every week.
He was MAD when they started charging for layaway.

If it was free we would use it.

I used it back when I worked at (major discount clothing retailer)-we'd have certain weekends where our employee discount was doubled, and could put stuff on layaway until that weekend for about 3 weeks before hand.
Other than that, no.

Ok you all just inspired me to email walmart corporate and ask them to bring lay a way back. Not that they will listen but hey....
