LAX to port of LA car rental

I am having a lot of trouble finding a rental agency that will allow a rental from LAX on a Sat and be able to return it to the port area(port Of Los Angeles) on Sunday. This is for the MR cruise in 2011.

I can see there are alot of "car for hire" options in LA, but we really wanted to rent a car and see some sights for the day, before heading to the port.

Right now I am looking at a rental from Budget : LAX returning to LAX the next day and then hiring a car service / van to take us to the port. Budget does not allow drop offs at LB2 (which I assume is right at the port?)

They will allow a drop off at the Long beach airport, but again , I would need a car service / shuttle to the port.

What are my options? Anyone with experience care to share?

When we did the EB Repo in 2008, we rented from LAX, spent a few days doing the sights of California and then returned in to Long Beach airport. My husband dropped me and the girls with all of our luggage at the port, returned the car to Long Beach, and then took a taxi back to the port. Worked out great for us.

All the local rental agencies will be closed on Sunday. It looks like Hertz have a location near by the port that is available for drop off, but closed Sunday. You may be able to call them and arrange an after hours drop off (allowed at some locations).
