LAX to DL area hotels

Hi,

I've done the trek from LAX to DL area hotels twice recently, once in Dec and once last June. Both times I took super shuttle, and it seemed to be quite an ordeal, driving around the airport for a long time, every seat full, many drop offs (one time we went over to knotts berry farm area first, etc). All said and done it took about 1.5 hours each time.

Has anyone done it recently and is the experience still similar?

Was thinking of using Uber, however, it seems the last few times I have tried to use Uber in LA, they were having surge pricing! The pricing also seems really inconsistent, so I have no idea how much it will actually cost before we go.

I'd prefer to use Uber, but if the cost is going to be a lot, we will just do super shuttle. It is two passangers.

Has Uber been on surge pricing a lot still? We are landing around mid-day on a Friday.

Also, if we get to the airport, and the surge pricing is really high, can we go down to the super shuttle area and sign up on the spot, or do you have to pre-register?

We are flying into LAX for a DLR trip in mid September. Since we may do one day at Universal or somewhere outside the DLR, we are leaning towards renting a car. I have done some research and it looks like I can get a full size thru a Priceline bid for about $120 after all taxes for five days. Rental cars out of LAX are surprisingly affordable. That price is about on par with what Uber would cost us for a R/T ride. We are staying at HOJO, so parking is free.

Not sure what your itinerary is, but if you have a hotel with free parking, having the flexibility of having your own car is a huge plus. If your not planning on leaving the bubble and there is a parking fee than I think you are better off with Uber or a private car/shuttle.

Were you on the arrival level at the designated stop when you saw the surge? It may take a few minutes for the app to realize that you're within the LAX geofence and adjust. I think I read that the LAX surge is capped at 1.5, and it's only to attract drivers, but I'm not sure if that was Lyft or Uber. You might want to try both apps if you're seeing a surge in one or the other.

Yes, I was on the arrivals level at the designated stop. Are you saying there shouldn't be surge pricing there?

I've heard drivers complain that there's no surge pricing there and that's why they won't do LAX pick-ups. They may have had to add it to attract drivers. You could contact Uber and ask if they're allowing the surge at LAX.

Oh geez - is this the super shuttle you booked through DLR? We booked airport transfers through them - were told that SS is faster than DME. (CM actually talked me into changing it one time when I was calling to make a payment) Has anyone used DME? Better luck with this? We land at 10 and are going right to the park, really not feeling to bum around the airport and other destinations...

We're flying in next Sunday, and we thought about one of the shuttles or Uber. But after asking here, we decided to go with Lanskys. It's a little pricey, but they're going to let us stop and get some food for the room, and there are no additional stops, so it sounded like a deal to us.

Lyft's version of the surge is called prime time. They've actually increased the maximum prime time charge recently. Again, it's probably best to contact Lyft directly and ask if they've enabled the prime time charge for LAX pick-ups.

I'm not sure about the rates to Anaheim, but to Universal once you have 3 people it's only a few dollars more than the shared van to get a non-stop van or private car through Supershuttle.

I had booked super shuttle, in the past, nothing through DLR.

I am making a point not to use Lyft, as I don't trust them after I clicked on an ad that said first ride free, only to find out it is actually only $10 off your first ride. Totally false advertising! No fine print anywhere that said up to $10. And they won't honor it.

Rental cars out of LAX are surprisingly affordable.

Most people overlook this option. Last two trips I was able to book a car for the full trip cheaper than what UberX would have been round trip.

Not that you need a car while at DL, but sometimes it is the cheapest and quickest option.

Sometimes having the car encourages a side trip that ends up being a fun part of the whole vacation, instead of just Disney only.

FWIW we picked a Suburban from Limos.com on our last trip and plan on using them again. Baggage claim to Hotel door for 7 was $120. For the time and aggravation saved, well worth it.
Also, our trip came with Super shuttle vouchers. We traded them and the Walt Disney Travel Company guest services for food vouchers.

We took Karamel shuttles last time we were there and are doing so again. I am not confident driving on those interstates and trusting my sister for directions. Ha! Last time it was super easy - despite being from Canada and not using my cellphone down there - we picked up a pay phone, dialed their toll free number and they told us exactly where we'd get picked up and when. We waited on the curb for maybe 5-10 minutes tops and they picked us up. They had another 3 passengers already and we went to pick up the last 3. They weren't where they were supposed to be so the driver called their operator and was like.. what the heck and after waiting what felt like forever but was probably 5 minutes, we found the other passengers and were on our way. It did seem like if those passengers were going to be any later, we were going to head off without them and without picking anyone else up.(note - if you are going to be late, you're supposed to phone the operator and they will schedule a different van to pick you up so others won't have to wait for you.) The driver was great, the carpool lane was great, and we were dropped off second, but everyone was near DL so it was kind of a nice little tour for my first time back in a few years. We are taking them again in December.

We used SS on our trip last week, but I'm not sure I'd use them again. First, we had to wait about 45 minutes at LAX to get picked up (either we had just missed one, or they were super slow in stopping/picking up other passengers). We were in Terminal 6. Second, 2 of the seatbelts didn't work, and frankly, I thought that the shuttle pretty dirty. On our way back to LAX from PP, we were given a 15 minute window of when we would be picked up, which was okay. But one of the bench seats was broken/lopsided on that particular shuttle. I'd almost rather chance it with the motor coach or I will pick a different shuttle service when we go back again.

I'll be flying into LAX with my 4 yr old grandson. I've looked around and it would seem the only option for transportation with a car seat for him is Lansky or am I missing something? Does the law exempt shuttles? I'm not comfortable not having him in a car seat and won't consider it for a taxi but somehow shuttles don't seem so bad to me- right or wrong. Right now I'm leaning towards the Disneyland Resort Bus, but I'm not reading great reviews on it. Lansky works, but pricey for just 1 adult with 1 child, especially since we only need transportation one way. Do I pretty much have the options right?

Shuttle prices for Sept when we'll be there are about $100 round trip for two people. I can't find a rental car under $250. Am I missing something, or are people only recommending rental cars for those with more people? From my search so far (and I'd love tips if I'm wrong!!) I've found that a shared shuttle or uber are the same cost and our best option for two people....

Not sure how many days your pricing the rental car for but $250 seems pretty high if that is for one week. Make sure your using a site like Priceline or Hotwire. That being said, if its just the two of you and you really don't plan on leaving Disney than a rental car probably doesn't make the most sense. Especially if your hotel charges for parking. But if you plan a trip outside the bubble and parking is free, than a rental might make the most sense from a cost and time perspective.

We are also going in September and I am finding prices are really high. I was thinking maybe rental cars out of LAX are just expensive, and am surprised to read here that they are normally more affordable. I've been watching prices for several months and they haven't budged.
