Laurie's Quest Continues....two more marathons in one year!!

Mid-week drive by! :drive:

Hope all is well with you! Have a good week!

Hi Laurie...

Good luck on your long run tomorrow :goodvibes:

Well, this has been some week for me!!!! Each year in November, our state physical education association holds its annual conference. Since, I am quite involved with this organization, the conference is always quite hectic for me. I did two one hour long presentations, which went awesome! For the first one, I had over 200 people attend my session!! I was a bit nervous but it went really well. I did a session on fitness activities for elementary school students. The other presentation had about 100 people in it, which is great as well, That one was about incorporating the academic subjects into your physical education lessons. The conference was really amazing, and I was a bit sad it was over!!

At any rate, since I was at the conference from wednesday until last night, needless to say, I didn't get much training in. I was able to squeeze a few treadmill sessions in on wednesday and thursday night, but that was about it. And hte fitness center at the Turning Stone Resort and Casino in Verona, NY (where the conference was held) was quite nice!!!!

this is a step-back week for me, so my long run this weekend will only be 11 miles. Since I have a hockey game tonight, and I haven't run much this week. The plan is to do a shorter run of about 5 miles today, and then get my LR of 11 miles in tomorrow morning, since there is no school!!

Thanks so much to everyone for stopping by to check on my journal!!

Sounds like the conference went well, Laurie!:thumbsup2 Both of your presentations sound wonderful!:goodvibes

Hope you enjoy your day off today.:goodvibes Good luck on the 11 miler!:cheer2:

Hi Laurie!

Hope the run went well this morning! Kind of crazy to think that 11 miles is a "step back" run!!

Sounds like you did an awesome job with your presentations too :)

Have a good day!

Well, I had to make a decision about my training this morning. I had planned to do my 11 mile LR from the weekend this morning, since I had a Hockey game last night, and my knees have been a little sore at the end of my LR's lately, and I didn't want them to be hurting at my hockey game. So, I pushed off the LR till today. Well, I woke up this morning and I was looking over my training log/schedule, and I came to the realization that I just couldn't do 11 miles today, and get in my regularly scheduled runs in this week. I really need to get back on track completely in this training. This past week was a little rough getting all my workouts in due to my conference. So, if I did my 11 today, and then my regular workouts of 4, 8,4 and then 17 on the weekend....I kind of felt that it was just WAY, WAY too much for me. So, the bottom line is...I skipped the LR and went on with my normal training schedule.

So, I did 4 miles today at a 10 mpm pace. I felt pretty good with this run, as it was a bit faster than what I have been running lately. I am hoping that the past week gave me a little rest that I needed to push me through the next 9 weeks of training!!

I also went to Fleet Feet today and got a new pair of running shoes. My knees have been a little sore, and I have a feeling my old shoes were a bit worn out and contributing to this knee pain. Hopefully, the new shoes will help out a bit.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by!!!!

Hi Laurie...

I *REALLY* think you made a very smart choice by just moving on with the training. Think of it this way..it was meant to be a pull back week anyway, so just let it go at that :). Sounds like your legs needed the break anyway. Besides, it's not as though you aren't exercising. I honestly have no idea how you are able to train and play hockey!!! SOOOO impressive :).

Sounds like you knocked it out of the park at your conference! :thumbsup2 You really sound like such a committed and wonderful educator! My dad was a phys ed teacher and I really respect the discipline. I love how active you are in the state phys ed association. I'm one of those HUGE proponents of keeping phys ed as a BIG part of the curriculum in schools. It teaches children healthy habits and to love exercise, as well as cooperation, team work and discipline!

OK...gonna' stop preaching to the choir :). Good luck with your big week of training! I know you'll do just great!

Hi Laurie - Sounds like you listened to your body, and didn't overdo it.. smart choice! LOL
Hopefully the new sneaks will help out with your knee issues.. Keep us posted!
How's hockey going anyway??

Hi Laurie! I'm new to your journal! You are doing great! Ever since you've started your training you have had some awesome times!!! I am so excited for you! I'm doing my first 5K at Disney in January. It amazes me that you can get all this running in AND play hockey! WOW!!!

Keep up the good work! You're doing awesome!!! :thumbsup2

Happy training!
Stacie

Hi Laurie!

Very smart choice IMO!! It's so hard to think about missing a run, especially during training...but all the experts say that if you miss one to not go back and try to make it up, just press on with your plan.

Keep up the great work! Good luck this week with everything!

Today, I had an 8 miler schedule, but because I didn't get out of work on time, I didn't get to the park until just after 4. Well it gets dark around 5 here now.....so that only left me an hour to get an 8 mile run in before dark. Seeing that I usually am around a 10 mpm pace, I knew this wasn't going to happen. So, at the 3 mile mark, I turned around and headed back. I didn't want to be out on the trail alone after dark! I finished my 6 miles and it was getting pretty dark out, so I was glad I didn't go further!

Today, I wore both my new sneakers and a knee brace, and my knee felt so much better for my whole run. Yes, it was a little sore, but not nearly as bad as the last few runs!! So, I am pretty excited about that. I think I am going to stick with the knee brace for the foreseeable future.

Amy--Thanks! I love being apart of our state physical education association. I have met some really GREAT role models who have really impacted my career. And in a way, someday, I hope I can be that role model for someone else!!

caitsmama--Knee felt MUCH better today, like I said, hopefully the knee brace and new sneakers did the trick. Hockey is great, I am playing on a new team this year, and we are doing ok. We lost the other night 6-1 to one of the best teams in our league. I love playing, and the guys on my team are so fun to play with!!

Stacie--Thanks for stopping by my journal! Training has been going well, some minor aches and pains lately, but I am determined to finish that race!! I will have to stop by your journal! Good Luck with your 5k training!

Scott--Thanks! I had read somewhere awhile back that if you miss a training run, you should just forget it. That was part of the reason that I just didn't do the 11 miler yesterday. And honestly, I think my body needed a little break as well, so hopefully, this will be good for me!!

Laurie - glad to hear that your knee felt better with the brace.. and smart move with not going the whole 8 miles in the dark! ;)
Have a good day!

You are doing a great job, Laurie! :cheer2: It is so important to listen to your body when training. I am proud of you for doing that!

Glad to hear that your knee is feeling better.:goodvibes

Hope you have a great day!

Hi Laurie! Glad to hear you knee is feeling better! I bet it sure appreciated the break! Great job listening to your body and very smart not to train all alone in the dark! We don't want anyone to snatch you! ;)

Hope you have a great day today! Keep up the good work!

PS. I love the fact you work w/ kids!!! I am an admin assistant, but I keep thinking if I ever have kids, maybe I'll go back as a teacher's assistant! (I worked in daycare--office manager--and had a blast! I loved being around the kids!)

Today, I had to head to the gym for my workout, since the weather was not good and it was dark by the time I got home. I finished my 4 miles in just over 40 mins. I was very pleased, since i HATE running on the treadmill, and I was dreading this workout!!!! But, I am super happy that I went and finished out the distance!

Tomorrow will be a rest day before my 17 mile LR on Saturday. YIKES!! that number is quite large, but I am actually kind of excited about the run! Call me crazy, but I am looking forward to it!!!

Thanks to everyone for stopping by my journal, the encouragement is awesome!

Stacie-- I LOVE working with kids. I used to teach high school physical education, and although I liked it, I took the first chance I got to move to the elementary school. Now, I teach K-3 and I love my job!!! It can be exhausting at times, but the kids are awesome!!!! People laugh at me sometimes when I tell them that I look forward to going to work every day!

Hi Laurie!

Glad to see that the knee brace is helping out on those runs!

I want to wish you best of luck on that 17 miler this weekend! So cool to see that you are looking forward to it...and I can say that in my opinion, if you complete those 17 miles, you'll have no problems with the marathon :goodvibes:

Have a great weekend!

Hi Laurie! Glad you had a good 4 miler! 40 min!!! WOW!!!

Hope your long run goes well this weekend!!! 17 miles! I can't even fathom that amount! I know you'll do great!

Have a great weekend!
Stacie

Well, I DID IT!! I finished 17 miles!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: It was HARD, but not as hard as I thought it would be. I am kind of sore right now, but I expected that. It took me just over 3 hours, my average pace was just under 11 mpm. I tried to take it easy and not worry about the time, since i really just wanted to get the distance in. My new philosophy is that I really need to worry about getting the distance in....my goal for the marathon is to just finish...I am not setting any time goal, since it is my first marathon and I have no idea what to expect. And I want to enjoy my first marathon, and not be disappointed if I don't finish in a particular amount of time.

I have to say, I am really psyched today, but only one down-point...I didn't get my marathon packet in the mail. :sad1: A few people on the boards received them yesterday and today....but no luck here. OH well, hopefully it will come on Monday!!! I can't wait....for me it will make it feel that much more real!!

Scott--As I was finishing the 17 miles, all I kept thinking was the marathon is 9 more miles!!! YIKES! I was beat at the end of the 17, I couldn't even imagine going 9 more......luckily I still have a while, and I am sure I will be able to do it, it just seems like so much right now!

Stacie--Thanks for stopping by! 11 months ago, I couldnt' even fathom running 17 miles, and I did it. I just followed my training plans and didn't try to push it too much. So, if I can do it....so can you...you just have to work up to it!!!

Congratulations!!! Great job with the run Laurie!!!

I like your philosophy about just getting there and enjoying the experience! Get in the long run miles at a pace that is comfy for you and then just see what happens...I think that's a great approach!

...and I haven't received my packet yet either, so don't feel bad!....

Have a great weekend!

No training for me today..it was a rest day after the BIG run yesterday! Surprisingly, I am not really sore today. I thought for sure my legs were going to be pretty sore today, but low and behold, I woke up and my legs felt fine! :cool1: :cool1:

Today, I pretty much relaxed, cleaned the house, started getting out my xmas decorations, and watched NASCAR. Tonight, I am heading out to watch my DBF play hockey! For a change, I get to be a spectator and watch him play!!

Scott--Ever since, i changed my philosophy about my pacing, I have felt so much better about my runs. I was starting to get down about my pace not being as fast as earlier in the year when I was training for my half, but now, I am just not worrying about that. I really just want to finish this one!!!!
