Laurie's Quest Continues....two more marathons in one year!!

Good luck with your run tomorrow Laurie

Good Morning! Just got back from my 9 mile LR, and it went great. I finished in just over an hour and half, with a 10:16 average pace. It was beautiful this morning when I headed out for my run. I really wish the weather would stay like this all winter!! At least we are having a mild fall for the time being, so I will take it!

Well, I have to go get ready to go see Mary Poppins on Broadway! My mom, sister and I are taking my 5 year old neice to see the show. She keeps saying it is "girl's day out"....it is sooooo.. cute. I am not a big fan of Broadway shows (I have a hard time sitting for that long!), but I hear Mary Poppins is GREAT!

Thanks so much to everyone for stopping by! I will try to get to everyone's journals later on tonight, before my hockey game!

Laurie, congrats on the LR!! And let us know how the girls day went!

laurie,
thanks for the positive notes in my journal.....i'll tell ya, it all helps keep you going when you just wanna throw in the towel sometimes :) raynauds disease (the short, abbreviated story) basically has to do with constriction of blood vessels, especially in the hands and feet, leaving them white, sometimes purple, numb, and in pain in extreme attacks. the cause is still unknown, but there is primary raynauds and secondary raynauds. i am fortunate enough that i just have raynauds, as much as it stinks, but do not have any other issues related to it. thanks for the interest. hope the wedding goes well! keep up the good work with training!

Laurie...

Hope you are having a good week. Nice work on the long run last weekend! What does your plan look like going forward? When do things really start to ramp up on the long runs?

Have a good one

Hi Laurie!!! :goodvibes

Hope you're having a great week! What's your LR this weekend? See ya' on the trail? :)

Hi Laurie...

Good luck with the long run tomorrow! (sorry about the Rutgers loss today...yikes)

Well, all I have to say is "What a week".....one of the busiest for me in a LONG time!!! But I still managed to get training in!!!! I was very proud of myself for that.

Here is how my training went this week:
Monday: 3 miles 10:30 pace --this was supposed to be 4 miles, but I have a minor case of shin splints, so I didn't want to push it.

Wednesday: 5.25 miles 11:56 pace---shin splints were bothering me, so I alternated walking and running. (This was supposed to be 7 miles)

Thursday/Friday--decided to rest the shins.

Today! I finished 14 miles!!!! My longest run ever!!! It went pretty well. Finished with a 10:39 pace, and my shins were good. I had some other aches and pains here and there, but I expect that as the mileage gets higher!!

This week was awesome because my DBF's sister got married on friday night! The wedding was so much fun, and we had such a blast!!!!!

caitsmama--girls day out last sunday was so much fun!! Mary Poppins is a GREAT show, my favorite broadway show I have seen!! My 5 yr. old niece LOVED it!!!

Tracy--Mary Poppins was great! My hockey game was not so good, we were totally outmatched and lost. Oh well!

geminibl--I know the feeling about reading these journals! There has been times when I have totally wanted to give up and I always think back to all the support here on the boards, and that is what keeps me going!! I can only imagine what it is like to have raynaud's. Is there anything you can take to ease the pain, etc?

Scott--Long runs are starting to get up there now!! 14 this week, followed by 15 next week, then I have a step back week of 11, followed by 17, 18, 13, 19, 12, 20, 12, 8, RACE. My weekly runs will increase somewhat also. I am using the Hal Higdon Novice 2 plan.

Amy--Thanks for stopping by! I was out there bright and early this morning. In fact, it was barely getting light out when I got to the trail just before 7. It was a beautiful morning for running!!

Ok...time to check in on everyone's journals!! I will try to check in more this week!!

Nice solid long run there Laurie!! I'm impressed with how you were able to slow down & shorten up the runs while nursing your injury...nice work there. I hope they don't give you fits all thru the training.

thanks for sharing the plan info...I'm always curious about the different plans and how they work for other people....I'm following a modified Bingham one for the Goofy.

Hope you have a good week!

Congratulations on your 14 mile run, Laurie! :cool1: That is wonderful, my friend!

I'm glad you had a great time at the wedding.:goodvibes

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!:cool1:

Congratulations on your long run Laurie!!! Way to go on your longest run to date :). Great pace too!!!! :goodvibes

Sounds like you had such a busy week. Great job keeping up with training considering everything that's been going on. And honestly...you did such a good job by pulling back when you felt shin pain. You are training so smart Laurie!

Happy training :)

Hey everybody! Thanks for checking in and posting! The encouragement is always so helpful!

This week, I got my weekday shorter runs in. My legs are feeling better, so that has been great. My new hockey season started this week as well, so I got some extra exercise with my game on tuesday night.

Today, DBF and I went into NYC and went to the NYC Marathon Expo...the race is tomorrow and the expo was thurs-today. It was AWESOME!! They had so much stuff there...I could have spent A LOT of money!! I had to limit myself...I ended up buying some new running tights, a running shirt, and some running gloves...all things I needed!! I also bought a "Stick"....one of those sticks you roll over your muscles to loosen them up..I already LOVE this thing!!! Can't wait to see how it feels after a run.

Tomorrow, I am heading out bright and early for my 15 mile LR, then it is home to watch the NYC marathon on TV....I thought about heading into the city to watch it, but I think I am just going to relax at home and watch on TV.

I will check in tomorrow to let you know how the 15 miler went...my longest run to date..I am sooooo excited!!!!

Laurie, wow.. 15 miles.. that just seems sooo out of my every lovin' dreams!! LOL Good luck! Sounds like you got lots of new toys to play with!
What brand of gloves and tights did you get?
Also, what is the stick??

Hi Laurie!

GOOD LUCK on the 15 miler tomorrow!! I know you'll do just fine :) Looks like it's gonna be pretty cold for you though...bundle up!

Ahhhh...expos!! I bet the NYC one was way cool!! very dangerous places they are....you can sure run up a line of credit there LOL Cool that you got the stick too!! Some guy about killed me giving a demo on my calf last month...boy I'm wound up tight LOL

Good luck tomorrow!

Well, I made the 15 miles....it wasn't pretty, but I finished! My longest run ever!!! I have to say, it was one of the hardest runs I have had in a LONG time, but mentally, I just kept telling myself to push through. I did have a little bit of knee pain from about mile 11 to the end, but not enough pain to stop. And now, several hours later, my knee does not hurt. Go figure!

I always tell myself that this training is NOT going to be easy, but runs like this really make me wonder if I can really do this. For me, right now, it is all a mental game...I can do the distance physically, it is just mentally hard. I will get there, I know I will....and I know it will be such an amazing feeling when I cross that finish line in January!!!!

caitsmama--I really like Sugoi clothes. I have several pairs of tights/running shirts that I love. They fit perfectly, so I tend to stick with that brand or Nike. The stick is a wonderful 'toy'--it is a stick that has plastic rings around the middle--basically, you roll it over your muscles and it loosens them up. It is GREAT!!!!!!

Scott--You are right about Expos---can be very dangerous to the bank account!! I saw so many things I wanted to buy, so I really had to limit myself!!! It was just so cool to walk around and hear everyone talking about running and the marathon today...it had me so psyched to run today!!

Tracy-Thanks for the encouragement!! It definetely helps A LOT!!

I will stop in to check on everybody a little later on...back to watching the NYC marathon!!

 Hi Laurie!!!

First of all....CONGRATS on finishing the distance today. I know what you mean....about the mental part....I find that to be the hardest aspect of long distance running. I was worried that I'd have a tough time with my 10 today after what happened at olympic trials yesterday to Ryan Shay :sad1: . I couldn't get that out of my head all day yesterday. Fortunately once i started to run I felt more like it was a tribute to him to be out there...but still....that was a hard bit of news to swallow. Anyway...everything (for me) past 12 is a big mental battle. Race day will be easier!!!! Just keep telling yourself that...the training is the dues you pay to get to the marathon and all the excitement.

I'm with you on the running clothes 100%! I love Nike tempo shorts and most of their tops...I LOVE Sugoi clothing as well (super comfy). I also really like the Under Armor stuff too! :thumbsup2

THE STICK!!!! eek  They used to torture me with that in physical therapy LOL. But it is a great massage tool....especial for those calves!

Once again...great job. Try not to let the difficulty of the run get you down!

Hi Laurie!

(still reeling from mention of THE STICK..yikes!)

Good job getting the miles in!! Not every run is gonna be an easy one, but do not let it get you down!! I'll guarantee that you will have some very solid long runs, along with some very tough ones as well. Keep your chin up and realize that regardless, YOU RAN 15 MILES!!! That's an accomplishment in itself, and something to be very proud of. Shake off the feelings about that particular run and focus on this week's schedule...you are doing such a great job!

And let me throw in the fact that I LOVE Sugoi clothing!! I like the whole deal, they way they fit, the way they look and their colors ROCK. FYI, Eastbay.com has a deal on some of their Spring line stuff...good discounts...you might want to check it out :)

Have a good week!

Great job on the 15 miler, Laurie! :thumbsup2 Even though it was a hard run, you still pushed through and finished the 15 miles. You are going to do a great job in January!:cheer2:

Have a great week!:cool1:
