Laurie's Quest Continues....two more marathons in one year!!

:woohoo: Laurie you are really getting speedy!! I'm really impressed with how quickly your pace is picking up. I'd say we are about on the same pace right now...but I just don't see myself getting a whole bunch faster lol. Maybe we can do one of those tough LRs together on the trail at some point :). You're doing a great job girl! Hope the rest of your week is going well! :thumbsup2

Oh...and good luck with your after school program. Sounds like a lot of work but i bet it will be rewarding :).

Hi Laurie!

Devils fan :sad2:

:rotfl:

Wanted to pop in and say "great job!" on that 6 miler!! Your training is coming along so good...way to go!! Hope school is going well for you too this week :)

Hey everybody--Today I had a 11 mile LR on the schedule, and I feel great following the run!! It was a very consistent run for me. My goal was to stay right around 10mpm and I did exactly that!! I finished in 1:50 with an average pace of 10:02!! It was great! I have been using GU shots and I am starting to like them. I had one before I headed out to the park, then I stop after 4 miles and 8 miles for another one. they seem to work for me so I am going to stick with them.

When I got home, I soaked in COLD water! YIKES!! This is the first time I have done this, so I am hoping it works. I have read a lot about ice baths after LRs so I decided it was time to try it..... wow! it was so hard to get in the cold water but once I was in, it wasn't so bad!!

I do have hockey practice tonight, so that should be interesting. Hopefully, my legs are not too sore! At least it is only practice and not a game!!

Tracy--Thanks for the encouragement! I find that even though I have to push myself to get out after a stressful day, it always seems to clear my mind and make me feel better!!!

Amy-Thanks! Not sure how much faster I will get, but I am happy with my pace right now!! We should definetely meet up for a LR at some point!! My After-School Program starts this week, so hopefully all will go well!!

Scott--Yes, I am a Devils fan...this year should be interesting!! I am actually a huge Martin Brodeur fan...being a goalie myself, he is my hockey idol!!!

Hi Laurie!!!! :)

Wow....super effort on that 11 miler! Great pace again. You really are doing a super job with the training. We are SOOOO close in pace right now. Let's definitely try to get together for one of those long runs we have looming in the future LOL!

I looked for you out there today but I think we must have missed crossing paths. Where do you start...Duck Pond or the other end lol? I figure at some point we'll cross paths again. Of course...that's assuming I'll remember you. You have to wear that Wish shirt again !!! Can't miss that for sure!

Ohhh...the dreaded ice bath LOL! My little trick is to put about an inch of water in the tub that is luke warm. Then I hop in and fill it up with the ice cold water. If you're feeling really brave (or sore lol)...you can add a bag of ice too but I tend to not be that brave LOL! I usually wear a sweatshirt up top and huddle up in there for 15 minutes. It's soooo cold but I've heard the benefits are worth the torture  .

Anyway...GREAT run today!

Hi Laurie!

Awesome run this past weekend!! You are doing so well with your marathon training & I love reading about your successful runs. Keep up the great work!!

I hope school and hockey are going well for you this week..pretty awesome that you can juggle those things and still maintain solid training.

And you are off the hook with the Devils...any fan of Marty is cool in my book LOL One of my favorite netminders of all time :)

Have a good day!

Hey guys! Well, today was a pretty stressful day at work!! My co-worker was out sick today, and the school did not get a sub to cover for her, so I had to teach both of our classes. Imagine teaching 40 k-3 graders physical education by yourself....yes, it is EXHAUSTING!!! on top of that, the after-school program that I am running starts this week, and the health fair that I am assisting with is on Friday.....so, today was completely crazy and I was exhausted by 3 o'clock.

That being said, I was not expecting much from my 3 miler today, especially since it was starting to rain when I started. But...I ended up having a pretty great workout!!!!!

I finished my 3 miles in 29:07 with an average pace of 9:38!!! I didn't feel like I was going that fast, so I was surprised to see my pace at the end. I was pretty psyched about that.

hopefully the weather holds out for the next few days, I have a 6 miler on tap for tomorrow, and luckily it is supposed to be cooler!!!

Amy--I start my runs at the Rochelle Park end of the trail and head towards the other end. I do a down and back route. Although, I have been starting at home in Saddle Brook sometimes...this adds 2 miles to my run. I always keep an eye out for you, but haven't seen you yet!! You definetely wouldn't miss me with that WISH shirt!!

Scott--I actually feel like having a hectic schedule helps me for some crazy reason. I am forced to schedule things out so I get it all in. I have always been an on-the-go person so I am used to it. Things are going to be interesting as my hockey season starts up...but I try and schedule my runs and hockey games so they aren't conflicting!!

Thanks as always for stopping by!!

Laurie -- wow.. you are one busy girl! LOL I am very impressed!
(and a lil' exhausted after reading about your day!) LOL I give teachers so much credit, as it will take all my strength to just go help out once a week for 45 min in dd's class! LOL

Sounds like you have had a busy week, Laurie! I hope you get a chance for some rest and relaxation this weekend.:goodvibes

You're doing a great job with your training! Keep up the good work!:cheer2:

Hi Laurie

Good luck on your LR this weekend!!! Hope the weather cooperates!!! :goodvibes

Hey Everyone, sorry for being MIA for the last couple of days, but this week was packed with things going on. So, I will give a little bit of an update on my week.

Wednesday, I had a 6 miler on the schedule. I went out after work for my run, and within the first mile, I knew it was not going to be good. My shins were killing me. At the end of the first mile, I stopped to stretch a bit to see if that would help, and it just did not do anything. By the end of the second mile, I just couldn't go anymore, so I stopped. I didn't want to push it any more and risk hurting myself more.

I am not sure what the pain was from, I just got new running shoes a few weeks ago, so I don't think it was from the shoes.

Thursday-The after-school program that I am running at school started. I was really nervous about everything going well. I had 8 classes running with about 90 kids involved. And, I am responsible for it going well. Well, it ended up going very smoothly and all my worries were for nothing. I was super relieved by that. Hopefully, monday goes just as well!!!

I had planned on going out for a 3 mile run on thursday when I got home, but my one shin was still a bit sore from the day before, and I didn't really want to push it because I really didn't want to miss my LR this weekend. So, I went home and did a bunch of stretching exercises and then iced my shin.

Friday-I was involved with organizing a health fair at my school on friday morning. This was another form of stress this week as I was nervous that everything would go well. I had 14 presenters scheduled to do sessions with the students. Well, after a rough start, in which a few presenters were late and one didn't show up, everything pulled together and the event was AWESOME! My superintendent was very pleased with how everything went, which made me very happy. Now, I would be able to relax and enjoy the weekend without the stress of all these events!!

Saturday-Spent the day with my two neices and nephew. My nephew ran in a 1/2 mile X-country race. It was his first race, and he finished in 2nd place!! He was so excited about how well he did. He asked me after the race, if he could come running with me now! I was laughing so hard, it was so cute. I told him that the next time I am down by him, I would take him out for a run.

Sunday-Today was my 12 mile LR! Well, my legs were feeling better, so I went out for my run. It was pretty cold at 7am, but it was a great change from the heat we had been having. Once again, I was very consistent with my pace, averaging 10:12 per mile. I felt great today, my shins were a little sore at the end, but not nearly as bad as the other day. When I came home, I made sure I iced them.

Ok, sorry for the looooong post, just wanted to update as to my crazy week!!

Stacy--Thanks for stopping by....yes, I am busy, often too busy at times, but I love what I do and it always keeps me on my toes!!

Tracy--I am going to try to relax today! Nothing on the agenda except a hockey game later tonight...so I will relax and watch some football today!!

Amy--Weather wasn't so bad today, it was a little cool, but I will take that over the heat and humidity any day!!!

hi laurie,
thanks for the welcome and the encouragement!!as i said, this is my first event that i have to train for, so do u have any training suggestions? right now i'm doing week 5 of the c25k plan, then was gonna go into a pre 10k train plan and so forth. i ordered the book "marathoning for mortals" online today and should get it next week....some people have suggested that to me so far and that's about it, but some input from a phys ed teach / marath trainee would be awesome! :) i don't want to do too much too fast and end up injured so i can't run, but i also only have just over 6 months to prepare and don't wanna start off too slow....please help :confused3 thanks, barbara

I have never used the c25k plan, but all the people on the boards that have used it loved the plan and did well in their first 5k. personally, I use the Hal Higdon plans. I liked his plans and feel they work for me. I used Hal's half marathon plan for my half in April, and I did really well in the race. I am now following Hal's novice 2 marathon training plan for the full in January. And so far, it has been great.

Some people on the boards also use the Galloway training plans. If you search online for training plans you can find a variety of training plans. The bottom line is that you really have to find what works for you.

You have plenty of time to prepare for your 15k in May. I am positive that you will do great!!!

Laurie, wow.. you had a super busy week!! Glad to hear that your after school program is doing well, and that the health fair went good too! It must feel like a huge weight off your shoulders now!
Congrats on the great LR! Sounds like you rocked!!

Hi Laurie,

You have been super busy! Did you get a chance to relax this weekend? That's great that the afterschool program is going well and that the health fair was a huge success. Way to go!:cheer2:

I'm proud of you for listening to your body and cutting your run short. You gave yourself a couple of days to rest and heal those shins and you did a great job on your LR. Keep up the good work, Laurie!:cheer2:

Have a great day!:goodvibes

Hi Laurie :)

Looks like you had a busy but successful week...glad things went well on Friday to allow for a stress free weekend :)

I'm the furthest thing from a doctor, but it sounds like a case of shin splints maybe?? Whatever the case, I think you did an awesome job backing off then resting, stretching and icing...seems to be a great remedy for all kinds of running related aches and pains :)

Nice to see that the long run went so great for you! Awesome pace!! You are very consistent!

Hope this week is a good one for you...

Hi Laurie!

Great job listening to your body and backing off w/ those sore shins. You did it right...and it's SO hard to do. I think backing off is one of the hardest things to train yourself to do during marathon training. I'm proud of you!

Another solid week for you in the Long Run too! VERY consistent. You and I are right there. I averaged 10:09 mpm this weekend. Do you have any pull back weeks for your long runs? Just curious if you get any break weeks :).

Hope things are going well. Keep icing those shins and let us know how you are doing!

Hey everybody....only time for a quick drive-by report of my week so far.

Yesterday, i did a 3 mile run with an average pace of just over 10 min. Today, I went out for my 6 miler, again with an average pace of just over 10 min as well. Both days, I felt great! Shin pain seems to be gone, but I have still been icing them after running just in case.

Things have slowed down a little this week at work...good thing!

Amy-This weekend is actually a step back week for me. I only have a 9 mile LR to do. Then I up the mid-week mileage next week.

Thanks to everyone for stopping by my journal! I really appreciate all the encouragement!!

OK--time to go watch my Rutgers Scarlet Knights beat up on South Florida!!!!! GO SCARLET KNIGHTS!!!!

Laurie -- good job on those runs!! i am just in awe of anyone that runs.. period. It give me motivation in my program!!
Good thing that the shins are getting better! That hurts..

Have a good night!

Well, today is a rest day before my LR tomorrow. This is a step back week for me, I only have to do 9 miles tomorrow. Then I will up the mileage a bit this week coming up. I am a little nervous about that. Especially, since this will be an extremely busy week for me. My DBF's sister is getting married on Friday and we will be busy with that all week, since a lot of his family is in from out of town. But i am determined to get all my workouts in!!!

Ok, I will check in tomorrow after my LR!
