Laurie's journal - Atkins plan (comments welcome)

Really busy weekend (and last Saturday off for a long while). Saturday: up early and out in the garden. (I remembered to slather on the sunscreen...more on that later.) The plan was to get the nasty grass-infested perenial bed weeded and then temporary move the plants I want to keep and divide, get new good dirt in and till it up and replace the plants. Jeff "volunteered" to weed the retaining wall area if I started on the nasty perenial bed...(no my DH does not like to weed and he likes even less to try and decern what is a plant and what is a weed.) We actually got started out there by 9am, then my folks called and said they'd like to stop by with my Grandmother for lunch. OK, the house inside is a complete disaster! So we are back inside - picking up, vacuuming...no scrubbing and I warned my folks not to expect much. They volunteered to bring pizza for lunch (Papa Murphy's low-carb crust). But we lost about an hour outside. Weather turned quite warm (for a NW spring). My folks helped out for about half an hour while the pizza cooked. But it was pretty apparent that by 3pm that the perenial bed was not going to be in a place to move soil into on Sunday. Foodwise, I was probably over my carbs for the day but not too badly. Not enough water and too much sunshine (yes I got out a hat in the afternoon.)

Sunday: Oh baby! do I hurt! You'd think that the gardening muscles would not hurt so bad after 3 weekends in a row! We are out by 10am - weather is much cooler with a breeze! DH and I did get the retaining wall area weeded and that area did need backfilling where things had settled the last couple of years. We decide to move the soil from the side of our house (getting ready for the siding crew to have an area to work out of) to the wall garden beds first. So the shoveling, wheelbarrowing & raking begins. We move from there to the front beds, side beds and vegetable boxes...skipping the perenials and rose garden areas which are not ready for new soil yet (but need it most!) This takes most of the day. By 6pm, I'm missing my "lost" hour and really hurt...DH is the same...but the dirt is out of the way. We pressure wash the concrete on the side of the house - I hope the siding crew appreciates the effort! Foodwise - I remember having steak, broccoli & asparagus for dinner but can't recall anything else, not enough water though.

Monday: Expecting the siding crew around 9am but get a call that they are running a least a half day behind. OK, so at least the work area is ready. DH and I look outside - stretch our tired muscles and decide that today is a non-heavy gardening day! DH will play basketball later with my dad & the teachers and mom and I will walk (a grueling pace for an hour!). I head off to the nursery and pick up some dianthus for the bed in front of the boxwood and some more wooley time to replace the area we had to dig out to remove the clover that crawled in during the winter months. I planted the plant starts after getting back (I had a breve on the way home). Siders are still not there when we leave for my folk house for the evening. But when we get home, their trailor is in place behind the gate of the side of the house.
Dinner was steak, green beans with bacon, green salad & low-carb rolls. My mom has the hang of this low-carb thing even if my father hasn't quite bought in yet. (She's been cutting out the "white" carbs from his dinner every night they eat at home now.)

Tuesday: I'm off one more day (because of the new schedule). Up really early to get the kitties fed before the hammering begins. Didn't get our walk in - but did get out and start on the rose bed early while DH played fetch, carry & mitigate for the siding crew. (DH promised to help with the rose bed too...) I started laundry and then on the second load, about the time the crew pulled the siding off the area where our laundry room is, the crew notices a water problem. Jeff lets the washer finish and then pulls it out away from the wall. Sure enough the hotwater hose is about to burst! Laundry is over for the day until we get new water lines. He also finds problems with the fittings on the pipes. He takes care of that problem while the wall is open along with some wiring as the day progresses. Meanwhile I brave the slugs and keep on working on the rose bed. I notice I'm getting a little pink around 11am - put on some sunscreen but it's too late - I'm burned. By the way - the sun wasn't really out much at all! DH helps me with the last of the weeding. The siding guys pack up around 5:30pm and DH and go get dinner out at Black Angus (steak place). I have a small filet, ceasar salad, mixed veggies & their steak soup (comes with dinner) and a margarita with lots of water. DH has the prime rib with a baked potato instead of the soup. We head over to Home Depot for waterlines and other misc. stuff and look at new exterior lights to replace the older, now tarnished ones but don't see anything we're excited about there or at Lowes'. Home - feed cats - drop dead! Lunch for me was cottage cheese - on plan except for not enough water.

This morning (Wednesday): up early again to feed the felines before the crew arrives. Our female is very skitterish with strangers about and wouldn't eat or even come downstairs all day if things are busy outside. DH and get about a 40 minute walk in and I head to work early. I've decided to put in an extra half hour Wed - Fri instead of be at work at noon on Saturday. We'll see how that goes. Should be a busy week with NHL playoffs starting - Go Red Wings!

I got the West-B test results back in my email yesterday...(the test I have to pass in order to be considered for a teaching program).

I PASSED! All of it, even the math! In fact I did much much better than expected. Reading 290/300, Math 281/300, Writing 280/300. DH passed also.:bounce:

CONGRATULATIONS ON PASSING THE TEST!!!! Now we get to say, I told you so. We knew you would do well, but you did awesome. Congratulations. Now what?

DH has gone Hockey crazy. He managed to get tix to one of the home games. Does he offer to take me? Nooo...

I hope the sunburn is feeling better. Keep the water flowing girlfriend. You need and extra 32 oz when you have a sunburn.

You yard sounds lovely.

Take care of yourself.
Beth

Congratulations on passing the West B test!

I love reading your posts on all of the gardening you've been doing, I can live vicariously through you since I don't have a green thumb. In fact, a drug rep brough me a beautiful plant the other day and I forgot to water it. Thankfully our nurse was able to revive it for me and it's still in great shape.

Sounds like you're going to have a busy weekend. Hopefully those gardening muscles won't be as sore. Take care!

Oh, Laurie, that sunburn doesn't sound so good! Beth, thanks for the info about how important extra water is when you have a sunburn - didn't know that!

All that gardening - all I can say is WOW! I'd love to see pics! I hope your muscles are feeling all better soon. Maybe you should splurge for a massage to help your muscles relax and feel better!

Good luck at work this week! Hope you're feeling all better soon! :sunny:

Wednesday: stayed on plan foodwise. low-carb roll & a little cottage cheese for breakfast. snack - breve. green beans, salami & brie for lunch. roast pork loin & green salad w/ranch for dinner. diet rite & lots and lots of water.

Thursday: stayed in bed a little longer than I'd planned...(Mariners game went late, so our newscast was off late and I didn't get home until midnight.) DH got up and got the kitties fed just as the work crew was pulling up. I've never seen Tilda scarf down her food so fast, hit the litter box and up the stairs to her hiding place. The work is moving along. The shakes arrived for us to get watersealed before they go up on Tuesday. We agreed to do that part of the work. We have gabled ends on three sides of our home. We are getting lap siding on most of the walls and putting up cedar shakes in the "peaks". We need to select our paint colors soon - some shade of grey. DH and I got our walk in and I got to work by 11:30 am.

Foodwise: exactly like yesterday but no breve. I was hungrier today - had an oz. of almonds and might did into my oz. of macadamias. The weather has been so nice and is actually improving. I sure wish I could be at home and get more done outside.

Thanks all for the congrats...now I need to find a teaching masters program that will work with my work schedule. Any ideas? My sunburn is not as painful as yesterday. I burned the top of my arms above my elbows but below my short T sleaves. Not a real sexy tan line to be sure. I also have tan lines from my garden gloves. Needless to say, I'm in a long-sleaved sweatshirt tonight.

Very busy day tomorrow with production early, so I'm glad that we are a normal 10-10:30pm show tonight. Getting to work with Charlie both Friday & Saturday! Yeah!

Friday: Slept in past walk time - baseball season has really got me tired out already. DH got the kitties fed before the work crew really started making noise. One whole side of our house now has the new siding now! Foodwise - same as Thursday except chicken instead of pork. Still had the munchies but stayed on plan - just need both packages of nuts to get through the night. Mariners game went late again - the boss is going to have to be understanding about OT this week. (My philsophy - if it's time after normal shift end (10:30 pm) then it's OT.)

Saturday: DH and I walked and I got ready and got into work at 1pm. Our Red Wings postgame went much better Wednesday's IMHO. Got another 20 minute walk on break. Food today - grilled lamb tonight and an iced breve on the way to work. (will probably skip the nuts for snacks - not as hungry tonight).
DH has started working on taxes...hoping we won't have to pay like last year!

Plans for Easter - we've been invited to Jeff's dad's for early dinner. DH will make the call whether we go or not. Will get in some garden time in the morning and early afternoon but nothing real intense. We also have all the shakes to seal. My folks are in Vegas with my grandmother so no Monday night basketball for DH. I'm hoping we'll be able to pick out a new front door on Monday or Tuesday.

Laurie, all these home improvements are exhausting, and it's not even my home! :teeth: :teeth: I find the kinds of projects you're doing to be draining to me. I just don't like all the extra people around, the change in normal routine, all the noise. You seem to be handling everything very well, taking it all in stride! I hope you got your painting finished on time!

I agree with you about the OT - if it's after 10:30, you should be compensated!

All this physical activity has got to be good for you and your food choices are lookin' good!

Hope you have a great Tuesday! :sunny:

Sunday: It was definitely time for a day off. We slept in and then got some general pick done around the house and yard. I mowed the lawn and finished just as the temp outside hit 85 degrees. This is some strange weather for the Seattle area - it usually doesn't hit 85 degrees in August! We waited until early evening to get our walk in. Foodwise: on plan, DH made grilled trout and grilled asparagus for dinner. I honest can't remember what I had earlier in the day. Not enough water.

Monday: Crew was back to work by 9am. Barely got the kitties fed before the pounding began. I got cleaned up and went to buy plants for some of my flower pots and the pot I do up for our neighbor across the street (sort of an adopted Grandmother). I planted all my herbs (6) except basil (still too early) and 4 medium mixed flower pots, 6 tiny pots for our cedar hanger & 4 large pots including the one for our neighbor. I'm hoping that the frost will stay away. This is the earliest I've ever done up flower pots, so if it snows here, it will be all my fault. I didn't get my walk in but did vacuum the entire house including the stairs with the hand tool. Foodwise - I had a small Wendy's double cheese burger with bun and a small caesar salad for lunch and we had pork roast with broccoli for dinner. I also had 2 small pieces of chocolate - total craving. We've also been brewing coffee in the morning for the siding crew and I've been indulging in that with a little splenda and cream. I'm way back on the caffeine again.
With the bun and chocolate, I'm sure I was over my limit again on carbs.

Tuesday: We've yet to eat dinner. Breakfast was coffee with cream. Late lunch was at Arby's - they now have low-carb wraps but I'm not sure the total carbs on the wrap they use. It tastes much better than the Subway wrap so I'm guessing that it's higher in carbs. I had the turkey, bacon, cheese with ranch. It was very good.

The siding crew was working right outside our bedroom today on the chimney and by the windows. Poor Tilda - she was just shivering with fright and we couldn't convince her it would be better if she spent the day downstairs. Her comfort zone is our bedroom. I finally let her pick out a place in our walk-in closet, up on a shelf obscured by Jeff hanging shirts and put her snuggle ring up there. She spent the whole day there.

I had a couple of oz. of peanuts this evening and more chocolate...I blame listening to the President's news conference for the chocolate. I did get 1 hr & 15 minutes of brisk walking in today while DH was helping a friend of a friend with home computer problems.

Doreen, thanks for stopping by. I'm really happy the siding crew is doing the work the way they said they would. Stopping to inform us of any problems they encounter and not rushing the job. The clean up every evening. What they have done looks so nice and I'm glad to have that failing, moldy LP siding off the house. Still it is stressful and tiring to get up earlier than normal. The kitties are quite unhappy with the whole affair and they miss their supervised patio time outside. The problem with the new siding is that now the old door and porch lights will look awful...We picked out new lights today and got them ordered. The door we found is a pretty good deal but DH wanted to look a little further. We might be doing the door ourselves after the other work is done instead of having the crew help install it. We've also got the new paint colors picked out - not much different from the color it was before - grey with light grey trim. We can't deviate too far from the original or we have to submit a change to the homeowners' association (the committee tends to be pretty picky - unless you're part of their circle.)

Laurie,

Your poor kitties, and you too. What you've done sounds wonderful. I don't blame you for giving in to chocolate. I would love to grow my own herbs, but I kill everything. Thanks for the heads up on the Arby's wraps. I'll have to check those out. I bet your arms are going to be buff with all the yard work you are doing.

Sending :goodvibes for you and the kitties,
Beth

There are some days you just want to do over...yesterday was one of them. But first Tuesday evening.

DH had a residential consulting job Tuesday at 7pm. Coworker of a friend was having real home computer problems and referred him to Jeff. He spent about 2 hours troubleshooting and recommending a new operating system and anti-virus software and will do the install for them when the software is purchased. (We don't have a re-sale business license - so we don't ever purchase hardware or software for folks.) I walked while he was gone and then he picked up some chinese food on the way home - broccoli beef, moo goo gai pin chicken & won-ton soup (only one won-ton in the cup of soup), DH also couldn't resist some fried rice for him - but I didn't have any. The restaurant through in an order of BBQ pork - they know our kitties like it. It was plenty for dinner and a couple of days of light lunch.

Wednesday - crew started right before 9am...we got the kitties fed just as the pounding began and I headed off for my walk - DH had some electrical work to do for the crew and then met up with me for the last half of the walk. I got in 45 minutes, got cleaned up and to work at 11:30am. That is when the day went south - very south.

The equipment I work on are Chyron systems - an Infinit and a Max - which is not state-of-the-art equipment any longer but is still used throughout the industry. (We are still waiting for budget approval for new Chyron PC based equipment...) When I fired up the equipment for the day the Infinit's wouldn't come up - internal harddrive is not responding. It took me arguing with an engineer for an hour before he let me come up with a work around solution...we can't be without the machine. I insisted a new harddrive be ordered and sent out from New York immediately. Who knows when it will arrive. So I'm running the operating system from an external zip drive and using an external harddrive for my data. Its slower than using an internal harddrive but its what we've got for now. When the M's graphics guy get back tomorrow - he will not be allowed to use the machine until the new harddrive is installed...the argument will not be pretty. We had OK shows for late Detroit and late NW - Mariners game went late again and we were here until 11pm.

I also got a call for some freelance work for May and July - however they are for days I'm normally scheduled at FSN so I can't accept the work. We could really use the dayrate right now. I was also assigned to do three events for FSN-NW - but I won't be earning my dayrate for them (about half what I charge for freelance because of new rules).

Thursday - I didn't want to get up. I was late getting the kitties fed - Tilda ate in our bedroom instead of in the kitchen. I didn't get my walk in. I was at work by 11:45 instead of 11:30. We have a very busy schedule - Red Wings postgame show but the Mariners are not on FSN tonight, on a local broadcast channel instead so we should be off air at 10:30pm.

The siding is going very well but slower than anticipated. It rained on the crew off and on all day yesterday. I hope the weather improves today and tomorrow. Thankfully it hasn't been too cold over night for the pots I planted.

Beth, thanks for you kind words. I can't wait for things to get finished and cleaned up so I can take and post some pics for everyone to see. I'm still trying to design a new landscape for the front yard to repair the damage from the new waterline that had to be put in last summer. DH and I would like to put in a small waterfall and catch pond in the front yard and add some more shrubs and trees to create a buffer from the driveway and garage. Growing herbs is really very easy - even indoors. They need good soil (I like the miracle grow soil and add extra osmocote - a slow release granular fertilizer), lots of sun light and water (don't let them dry out but don't let them sit in too wet). Grow what you use...chives, italian & curley parsley, oregano, sage, thyme, rosemary etc. Give them about 3 weeks before you start cutting for use - the cutting stimulates them to grow more. I get starts from nursuries instead of growing from seed. I won't get basil until it's much warmer overnight - it doesn't like cold.

Ok Laurie,

I'll give it a try. I need to wait a while because we're still dropping into the 30's at night. I will not hold myself responsible if they do not fare well.

I'm sorry that you have been having more trouble at work. I hate computer problems. I hope today goes more smotthly.

Thursday's meals - On plan - not much different except DH sent smoked salmon along instead of salami with my brie. It was a really nice treat. We ended up having to work until 11pm even without the M's game on our air. I guess I have to blame the ad sales guys - too many sponsored elements to get in a 1/2 hour show.

Friday: I woke up with a terrible throbbing headache and haven't been able to shake it. Got the kitties fed before the pounding outside began and then took off for my walk. DH stayed to assist the crew...he's still re-doing some of the electrical work. I walked for my 40 minutes and then barricaded myself in the bathroom with my work clothes...the crew is working right outside our bedroom window. I'm hoping that they get finished up there today.

Got to work on time and got prepped for a graphics pass...now it's waiting for the producer and editors to make their deadline so we can get the show done before news production starts. The new harddrive still has not been delivered so I'm still praying and holding my breathe that my work around doesn't fail! The good news is that I get to work with Charlie again tonight and tomorrow - he's so much more positive than the new guy.

Finished Friday as I started it - with the mother of all killer sinus headaches. (Yup - still there this morning.) Foodwise, on plan, back to salami instead of salmon though.

Saturday: Headache! I guess I'll be waiting for high pressure to move in and help me out. DH made me some grilled lamb kabobs for dinner tonight - so good! We got through our Red Wings postgame show unscathed - almost...the techical director had happy fingers and got one of my graphics up while I was still working on it. We are on after the Mariners game again tonight.

I did get my walk in by myself this morning - DH's knees are bothering him. The weather was nice.

The siding crew got to work about 10am this morning. Things are looking very nice - but wow is it taking a long time. Tilda got her breakfast down and got right to her "tree house" in our closet before the guys even pulled up outside.

I'm hoping to get some gardening in tomorrow. The evil perenial bed is still needing to be tamed.

 Laurie,

I'm sorry your headache is still hanging around. Hopefully a day without the siding people poundsing will help. Maybe you could get a nap. Those lamb kabobs sound phenomenal. You;ve got a keeper.

Hope you feel better today,
Beth

The headache is still here - dull at times, today it's back full strength. I'm not showing any other signs of a sinus infection just a horrible headache. We'll see just how long I last here at work.

I've been eating pretty much on plan with the exception of yesterday...I had a small tamale w/white bean chile for lunch yesterday and we ended up at Rain Forest Cafe for a light dinner - shared an appetizer platter while waiting for my folks to pick up the nieces at the airport and bring them down there for their own dinner and a volcano! We see the girls so rarely. I did have a bite of brownie and a little ice cream as well.

I have walked everyday so far this week since last Thursday. Did an extra upper loop yesterday in the neighborhood and put the walk an almost 50 minutes. The walking seems to help the headache a little. It was drizzling this morning but not too cold. My flower pots and herbs are surviving for now - but not growing very rapidly...too cool for that. The siding project is not yet complete. They've had some equipment problems and are waiting for a repair on a smaller nail gun to install the shakes on all the gabled ends. It is starting to look like a house again instead of a construction project.

DH has made me some flank steak and a new calamari dish with peas for my food tonight. Right now I'm just not very hungry even for my cottage cheese. Forgot to refill my vitamins so I will have to try to remember to take them when I get home tonight.

Still no movement on the scale - but I'm in a smaller size of jeans today (a 12) and they are snug but not uncomfortable.

Hi Laurie,

I'm sorry that the headache is still hanging around. I hope you can get a good night's sleep and get rid of it/ Woohoo! Size 12 jeans is awesome.

Yes the headache - now definately diagnosed as a sinus infection - is still here. So I took yesterday (Thursday) off from work. It's very difficult to concentrate when the pain just won't go away. I've been running a low-grade temp as well...Dr. says my body is just trying to fight it off.

I called my mother early in the day and let her know of my plans to stay home and she suggested I come up and get our niece (in town for spring break) and have her hang out with us rather than having help her out at school. Charly liked being paroled from the first grade classroom for the day. She looked after me and visited with the cats (Horatio used to "babysit" her when she was a baby and keep her bedroom monster free when she lived with us - Tilda came from a litter found in the field where Charly lived with her mom just after her sister Allysa was born - both kitties remember her well and even Tilda...who doesn't come out around strangers, came down from her hiding place for a visit.) She won Niko over very quickly too - he really enjoyed having someone with energy to play with.

We took her back up to my folks house and all went out for Mexican food at Azteca...they have a new "low-carb" menu but I think its more geared for SBD than Atkins. I had the low-carb enchiladas - one chicken, one steak. It comes with steamed veggies - skipped the carrots and ate the broccoli & zuchini and low-fat white beans - I had about 2 tablespoons. It did not have any cheese, sour cream or guacamole...all safe for Atkins, so Charly offered some of her's from her dinner. The enchiladas were wrapped in real low-carb torillas with a very hot hot sauce. Overall it was a good attempt - but not quite there. (I'd had a salad for lunch with mixed greens, walnuts, gorgonzola & a few slices of fresh pear with vinegaret dressing.) DH had regular enchilada with rice and beans and really paid the price overnight. He now understands why I suffer when I have too many carbs.

Our oldest kitty is a little under the weather...for 18 he's doing very well, but Jeff wanted to get him into see the vet tomorrow to check kidney function. He's dropping weight even though he's always eating. I know we won't have him forever - but I'm not ready to lose him yet. It's been just two years since we lost our kitten Samantha to HCM - I'm not ready to lose another one.

On plan eating wise today - no low-carb roll (we were out) otherwise the same...I did get in a 40 minute walk with DH this morning and but no walk yesterday. I plan to go home tonight and stretch and put a hot pack on my forehead (Dr's way of treating a sinus infection.)

The siding project should be complete by tomorrow...cross my fingers...the caulk needs to dry for two weeks before they can paint. But at least the pounding will stop.

We have an extremely busy day at work for a Saturday - those Detroit sports teams have got us hopping. I have to back in at 1pm to prepare for post-playoff coverage of both Pistons and Red Wings. Add to those the NFL draft along with our 2 regular news shows and Saturday will not be a kickback weekend day. It's good to be busy - as long as this headache goes away.

 Laurie,
I hope that headache is gone by now. I'm also sorry that your weekend is so busy, but I'm glad that the Wings and Pistons won. Your salad sounds like it was really yummy. Take care of yourself.
Beth
