Laur’s & Andy do the Universe and the World – Day Thirteen

Me – Laur’s – 27
DH – Andy – 28

Day thirteen – 3 October 2006 – My diamond in the rough

We had booked our wake up call from Mickey and Stitch for 8.45 am this morning to give us a bit of time to recover from our late night at MNSSHP the night before. Andy brought us breakfast to our room, and I had my usual froot loops and he had rice krispies, and we shared a croissant.

We set out to do the World Showcase, arriving at Epcot at 11 am. Before going over to the World, we stopped at Club Cool to top our bodies up with weird free soda.

After that, we went first to Mexico and rode El Rio del Tiempo. I think this ride is pretty sweet. We also bumped into a couple of friends:

Next, on to Norway and ride Maelstrom - we even stopped to watch the movie at the end.

We went to see the exhibition in the China pavilion, which was about the terracotta warriors and was fascinating. I have always been interested in Chinese culture, and love looking round here.

We had a look round the America shop and as we had arrived at Japan, decided to stop for some lunch at my favourite place, Yakitori House. I had my usual, Japanese beef curry, and Andy had Teriyaki chicken and we each had a bottle of apple juice.

We had a look round the Japan shop, and I carefully examine everything Hello Kitty so that I can spend the rest of the day wondering what to treat myself to. So many beautiful things, I cannot possess them all!

We went back to China to watch the child acrobats. The show is usually performed outside, but it was beginning to rain so they moved it inside. It was difficult to see as, despite the benches, everyone stood up to watch. What can I say, these kids are truly amazing, I hope they enjoy what they do. We watched the film whilst we were in the China pavilion, yet another thing we haven't done since our first visit.

We had a quick wander around the Germany shop and then I stopped to get a strawberry margarita from the stand in Mexico. That didn't last long!

One of our aims for today was to have our picture with Aladdin and Jasmine, and as luck would have it they were out together in Morocco. They were so friendly to us and Aladdin asked if Andy was my diamond in the rough - I have taken to calling him this now. Aladdin thought it would be fun for us to have a couples picture, and arranged us both in the same way. I am very proud of the outcome.

We looked at the little hedge maze in the UK as I had never noticed it before (not the most observant person, I know) and then went into the England shop. Here we saw Alice in Wonderland and I wanted to get my picture with her. She was very sweet and took her time with all the little kids and even the big ones like me! She was put out that Andy didn't want his picture with her so he conceded in the end.

Back round we went to Germany so Andy could try an Oktoberfest beer and then we meandered back to Japan to watch the candy lady who, it has to be said, is incredible. We went back into the Japan shop so that I could make my Hello Kitty purchases. I bought some fleecy pajama bottoms (great for cold England nights), some trainer socks and a couple of the chocolate pots with biscuit sticks that I like. I also got some sweets for my friend Kari's Christmas parcel.

We left Epcot at 6 pm, but we just missed a bus (as in we watched it pull away from our stop - arrrrghhh) so didn't get picked up until 6.20 pm. We then had the slowest bus driver in the world ever to take us back to the AKL. I was beginning to think we would never get there.

We got bathed and dressed up for our 7.50 pm ADR for Jiko. We checked in on time but weren’t seated until 8.15 pm by which time I was getting pretty agitated as I was wearing heels I can't walk in and there was nowhere to sit down. That will teach me to be a slave to fashion.

We chose a nice white wine to go with our meal, but don't ask me what is was because I am rubbish at things like that. I am willing to hazard a guess that it was South African though. ;) We shared the Kenyan barbecue chicken flatbread to start with which was delicious. For our main course, Andy had the lamb shank, and I had pork with mushrooms and sweet potato dumplings. I wasn't overly impressed with my pork, it was quite undercooked in places so I didn't eat it all. To be honest, I liked the mushrooms best. We shared the chocolate mocha stack cake with ice cream for dessert and had a cappuccino each. I thought the food was OK, but not the best I have ever had and not high enough quality to warrant the price. I didn't think it was a patch on Palo on the Disney Wonder which is my number one meal to daydream about.

We went back to our room after the meal, and Andy had some beer and I had an alcopop called Passionate Kiss which was very sweet and girly. Managed an early night in anticipation of a long day tomorrow and made it to bed for midnight.

Love reading your report. Which restaurant would you recommend at Animal Kingdom Lodge and want to try one of them next summer?

We didn't get chance to try Boma, unfortunately, as that did look nice. Jiko is worth trying but don't go with as high expectations as I did!
