Laughter, Tears & Screams- Two Aussies in WDW! New - 6/10 - The End!!

I'm in! You guys look the type to cram the excitement in!!

Lovely wedding photo's! Wish I could have tagged along to that honeymoon too! Mud buggying? :lovestruc :worship:

Guess what... The 28th of December had finally arrived!! And that meant - off to the US we go! Woohooooooo!!! :woohoo:

We had dropped Annie (our cat) off at Conan's parents, and made sure she was relatively settled. I just felt so sad and guilty to be leaving her! She didn't really know Conan's parents and had never been to their house before, but we figured it would be nicer there than at a boarding kennel. She's a very quiet, cuddly, scaredy cat and loves hiding in little places. She'd found the perfect spot at Conan's parents house - behind their computer desk! She stayed behind there a lot of the time - at least she felt safe and cosy!

So, we'd packed. We'd unpacked, and repacked again. A girl has to be sure she's got everything, right?! Passports, tickets, hair straightener... check, check, check! We were all set! :thumbsup2

We got a taxi to the airport and checked in easily and without hassle. Just the way we like it! I tend to panic at airports, so we got there about 3 hours early. Hehee. Luckily, Conan is a Qantas Club member, which means we get to use their private lounge - free snacks, drinks and Internet! Woohoo! Some last minute DISing never goes astray.

Finally the time came to board our plane. I won't give you a blow by blow description of our flight, but I will tell you this - we got upgraded!!! Yayyyy! We had booked regular economy seats, but for who knows why, we were upgraded to Premium Economy! This is a new type of seating on Qantas planes. It's basically halfway between Regular Economy and Business Class. So luxurious!! We had big, spacious seats - just the two of us in our aisle, so there was no stranger to climb over to get to the bathroom. Plus, excellent service and gourmet style meals. Ooh la la, our trip was off to a great start!

Even with the ultra-comfy seats though, I didn't sleep a wink. I was far too excited to sleep!! Conan slept a little, but I just watched movies instead. I watched The Dark Knight, Ghost Town, Meet Dave and Tropic Thunder. And I enjoyed them all!! (Has anyone else seen Meet Dave, with Eddie Murphy? I haven't laughed that hard in a long time while watching a movie! It was just unfortunate we were on a plane, surrounded by other people who weren't watching the same movie. Embarrassing! :rolleyes1 )

Our flight from Melbourne to LA took around 14 hours. We then had an hour and a half to transfer to our New York flight. Waaah! I'd been nervous about that for months. An hour and a half is not long!! It's especially not long when you have to go through customs, find security, wait in a 2 mile long line to go through security, and then run to your gate. Oh my goodness. We made the plane by about 5 minutes. It took me a good couple of hours to calm down after that!!! :scared1:

After another 5 hour flight, we eventually arrived in New York. Yayyyyyyyy!!! I just love New York and we were both so excited to be back!! It was around 6pm when we arrived. We caught a cab who drove us to our cute little hotel, called The Pod Hotel, on East 51st Street. Here's our tiny (but very nice and clean!) room...

IMG_8482.jpg

I won't go into massive detail about our time in New York, because this is, after all, a Disney trip report!! I'll just tell you a little bit about what we did.

That first night, we were obviously pretty exhausted, but didn't want to go to bed straight away. We were in New York City, after all!! Plus, we wanted to try to get our body clocks adjusted to US time. So we went for a little walk to the Rockefeller Christmas Tree. I was so excited to see the tree!!

When we got there though, we didn't so much see the tree, as see the massive crowds of people surrounding the tree. Oh, my, goodness. It didn't take long for us to realise that New York was BUSY. Busy with a capital B!! People EVERYWHERE!! Everywhere we went within a few blocks of Times Square, Conan and I had to grip onto each other tightly so we wouldn't get swept away in the crowds. We really couldn't see anything - we were just pushed along in one gigantic sea of people. Yowza.

We had truly taken the un-business for granted in September 2006, when we were there last! Back then, there were small lines for things like the Empire State Building, but this time, the line to go up the top literally went for about 3 miles. Wow.

It was exciting still, don't get me wrong! It was just... busier!!

We didn't last long that night though, before heading back to our little hotel and crashing for the night. Because the next day was a big one. The next day was .... our 1 year wedding anniversary!!

That day, we had a little sleep-in before heading to Central Park. Months before, we (ahem, I...) had booked an anniversary lunch at Tavern on the Green, a lovely restaurant in Central Park. I'd read a lot about it and thought it might be a nice place for a romantic lunch!

And it really was! The place was beautiful, and the food was excellent. Plus, we ordered a special anniversary cake dessert to celebrate! Here we are, enjoying our lunch...

IMG_8455.jpg

Here's a close-up of the cake. My first food porn for the trip!! :lmao:

IMG_8456.jpg

Afterwards, we played in Central Park for a little bit. It's all just so pretty! I love that it feels so quiet and peaceful, even though it's in the middle of the most lively city in the world.

IMG_8460.jpg

That night we headed to Broadway to see... The Little Mermaid!!! I'd heard mixed reports about the show, but I've always loved the movie, and Conan was happy to go along with anything. And you know what? It was great!! Maybe not the best show ever (that has to go to Wicked!), but still awesome. The girl who played Ariel was fabulous, and the little boy who played Flounder was amazing!!

IMG_8483.jpg

Oh my goodness, this is taking longer than expected! Sorry! I'll keep going in the next post...

The next day, we bought tickets for the red touristy "Hop On / Hop Off" bus that goes around New York. I think they're a great way of getting around, and the tickets lasted for 48 hours, and included a "Holiday Lights Tour" as well. Bargain!! :thumbsup2

We did have a crazy tour guide once though. She was as old as the hills, but had supersonic hearing. We weren't allowed to talk on the bus. Ever. If you even muttered so much as a "Oh, look at that!", she growled. Ahh, New York. You've gotta love it!

So we took the bus all the way Downtown, walked past the World Trade Center site (which is really just now a big building site), and headed to where the ferries leave for the Statue of Liberty. We thought it might be nice to go visit her again, even though we went in 2006. But you know those crowds I was telling you about? They were all there, waiting for the ferries. I've seriously never seen anything like it. The line snaked around itself, right around Battery Park where the ferries leave from. It must have been 4 miles long all up. We weren't willing to stand in the freezing cold line (did I mention it was COLD in New York!?) for the rest of the day, so this is as close as we got to the Statue of Liberty this time...

IMG_8501.jpg

See the little dot over Conan's left shoulder? That's her. :lmao:

Oh well, we were glad we visited her last time!

Instead, we headed to the East Village, and ate lunch at S'Mac. It's a teeny tiny restaurant, which sells ONLY macaroni and cheese!! All different types! Yum!! I'd seen it on Oprah once - her friend Gayle visited it - and thought it might be fun. And fun it was! The place was very crowded, but the food was fantastic! Check out my massive serving of Mac & Cheese! (And no, I didn't eat it all!)

IMG_8505.jpg

That night we did the Holiday Lights tour which was nice, although hardly any of my photos turned out. My camera is just not very good at night-time!! :confused3

Which brings us to the next day, which was... New Years Eve! Wahooooo!!! Originally, the plan was to go to Times Square and join in the massive street party and watch the ball drop. Those plans changed though, as I heard more about it. Apparently you have to get there at 12 noon, and stand in the same spot for those 12 hours. No bathrooms. No drinks. No food. No nothing, except the freezing cold and the big crowds!! Oh no!

So we looked into other things to do. Eventually we decided to buy tickets to a New Years Eve party at Bubba Gump, right in the middle of Times Square. It was expensive, but the price included all you could drink and eat! Wahoo! To say we were excited about this night was an understatement. We were beyond excited!!

But it wasn't night-time yet. That morning, we got up early to go up Top of The Rock, at Rockefeller Center. We had been up the Empire State Building in 2006, so we decided to give Top Of The Rock a go instead. So up we went!!

It was a spectacular view! We could see the Empire State Building, Central Park, and all the way to the Statue of Liberty. Wow! And we were pleased we went early, because there was no line at all. And even more exciting... After we'd been up there for 10 minutes, it started to snow! Yayyyyyyy!!!! I know you're probably thinking, "So!?" but you have to remember that we're from Australia and hardly ever see snow!! Certainly not falling snow like that, in the middle of the city! It was so exciting!! Here we are, with a not-so-good view anymore, since the snow took over the city! You can still see the Empire State Building behind us there...

IMG_8548.jpg

Also? It was COLD!! It was summer in Australia when we left, and our body temperatures hadn't quite adjusted yet! In fact, they never adjusted. I've never been so cold before, in my whole life! Our winters are nothing like your winters obviously, and I knew it would be cold, but I wasn't expecting it to be THAT cold!! Brrrrr!! My legs had permanent goosebumps!

We also checked out the Rockefeller Christmas tree without the crowds that morning... So pretty!

IMG_8514.jpg

We had to visit Central Park again after that, to see the snow on the trees! This is how I'd wanted to see Central Park - snowy!!

IMG_8554.jpg

We wrote in the snow...

IMG_8561.jpg

Because it was so cold, we decided to check out the Museum of Natural History that morning too. It was fun, but I was a wee bit disappointed that the dinosaurs, monkeys and statues didn't come to life, ala Night at the Museum. :rolleyes1

After that, it was nap time! Also, my boots broke. Seriously. Both soles had fallen half off. Heh. Apparently Australian boots aren't made for New York winters.

We headed back to our hotel, and had a nap before our big night out! Wahoooooooooo!!!! Here we are, ready to head out...

IMG_8576.jpg

So we had our passes for the party, ready to go. We had to wear them around our neck and have ID ready. We weren't allowed to take bags with us, so Conan put our camera in his jacket. This was military-style organisation!! We liked it! It was all to do with security and Times Square being totally blocked off, of course. And may I just say, the NYPD are truly amazing!! I've never seen so many police officers. Wow. I felt so safe the whole time.

We eventually met the Bubba Gump party person on the corner we were told to meet at. We were soldiered into a single line, and the police walked along and checked our passes. Then we were told to follow the line as we walked to the restaurant, a couple of blocks away. Whew!! We daren't put one foot in the wrong place!! There was one guy behind me who didn't have a pass around his neck. He was grabbed by two police officers and whisked away before I could even blink. Hehheheee. Awesome!

Anyway, we eventually made it to Bubba Gumps safe and sound. And WOW! This was the view from the window -

IMG_8582.jpg

See the ball up the top there!? Yay!! :yay:

There were around 250 people at the party, and it was honestly one of the most fun parties I've ever been to. The atmosphere was unlike anything I've experienced before - everybody was SO friendly and happy and excited! And why wouldn't they be!? We were in the middle of Times Square, on New Years Eve!! Elton John was performing just down the street, and we had three hours until the ball dropped! It was almost surreal!

Conan and I kept looking outside at the people standing out in the cold. And it really WAS cold that night!! They were jumping up and down on the spot to keep warm. I don't know how they did it for 12 hours straight. Crazy!! We were so glad we were somewhere warm!! With copious drinks to be had!

Here's some random shots from the night. Conan dancing like mad...

IMG_8592.jpg

Us having our fortune told by the resident fortune teller! Hilarious!!

IMG_8590.jpg

At 11.50pm, they announced that we could go outside onto the sidewalk if we wanted to watch the ball drop! Definitely!!! We'd both warmed up with plenty of drinking and dancing at this stage, and I could think of nothing more awesome than going outside to watch the ball drop. We were literally 50 yards away from the ball. Amazing.

Here I am with my new friend from the NYPD!!

IMG_8596.jpg

You know how I said I'd never felt anything like the atmosphere inside the party? Well!! The atmosphere outside in the middle of Times Square with 8 minutes to go was electric!! There's no other way to explain it. We were jumping up and down on the spot too - not from the cold, but because we physically couldn't stand still. It was all too exciting. Conan looked at me at one stage, grabbed me and yelled, "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER!!!" And I totally agreed. It really was!

So here's midnight, with the millions of pieces of confetti flying through the air! And yes TrixieQuilts, they really do fly upwards!! The wind takes them everywhere!!

IMG_8611.jpg

Here's Conan and I, thrilled to bits!

IMG_8630.jpg

We started to lose the feeling in our extremities shortly after that, so we went back inside to the party for more drinking and dancing!! We stayed until about 2am, when they kicked us out. Heh. We walked home in the freezing cold, and didn't feel a thing. I do remember calling out "Happy new yeeeear!" to a few random strangers we passed. Hehehee.

The next day wasn't so happy. I was very sick. Oh dear. But... it was worth it!! I wouldn't change a thing about our New Years Eve! New Years Day though, was another story.

We were booked on the Sex & The City tour that day. I'm a massive fan and couldn't wait to see all the familiar sights!! But... I was way too hungover to enjoy it, I'm afraid. Especially when we went to Aidan and Steve's bar, Scout, and were offered a Cosmopolitan...

IMG_8642.jpg

Auuughhhhh!!!

I did, however, manage to have a cupcake from the Magnolia Bakery, where Miranda and Carrie ate cupcakes once! I even bought a shirt that says, "I Cupcake New York", except it doesn't actually say "Cupcake", there's a picture of a cupcake there instead! Like those "I Heart New York" shirts you see everywhere!

IMG_8639.jpg

That afternoon, we recovered, ate some great Thai food, and did a little shopping. And slept!! And the next day, we left for Miami!!

So that was New York! We really did have a fabulous, fun, crazy time. New Years Eve was definitely the highlight, but we just loved playing in Central Park and wandering around the city itself. Even though it was freezing!! We were actually pretty exhausted after all that, and were looking forward to heading to Miami for some sun and relaxation! But New York still has my heart. I just adore it! It's such a fantastic, lively city. :lovestruc

Next up... our Miami adventures!! (That won't be so long!! Sorry!)

Do not apologize for your installment being too long! I wish there was more to read! I am home on (yet another!) snowday. (I am also a teacher!) After this winter, my kids aren't even asking to go outside and play in the snow anymore. Ha ha.)

Thank you for posting your wedding/honeymoon pics. They are great! You looked beautiful and have amazing wedding photos. Your Hawaii pictures took me down memory lane....and are making me want to go back SOONER! Not in the cards right now!

I got the goosebumps reading your NYC part of your report. You love that city as much as I do!!! I could feel your excitement! How awesome did your NYE turn out??? Worth a little pain and suffering the next day!!! LOL....

Can't wait to hear more.....We went to Miami and the Keys in 2006 right after my youngest was born. We were totally sleep deprived from having a newborn who took awhile to sleep through the night, but the husband and I had a great time!!!

Keep the reports coming. You are a great writer!!!!!

Greta start! Love your wedding dress...gorgeous!
I have always wanted to go to NY for New Year. You must have been frozen. I was in WDW this year. Someday I would love to go to Hawaii. Thanks for all the wonderful pictures.

Your wedding photos were gorgeous and those cool colored drinks you guys had in your hands looked pretty yummy. :drinking1 Your pics from Hawaii are so beautiful! That's very cool that you got to do Times Square for NYE. We are never that brave to venture up to the city for that...just happy to watch it on tv. Can't wait to hear the rest! What a cool trip so far. :cool1:

Mudbugging in Maui... (Such attractive outfits, I know! :lmao:)

IMG_7818.jpg

ray would love this!!!

We also went whale watching, and were lucky enough to see lots of humpback whales not very far from our boat! Wow!!

IMG_2768.jpg

SO COOL!!!!!!! i love any kind of sea life. once we saw dolphins while we were deep sea fishing in the gulf and i almost jumped off the boat i was so excited! i have a friend that's a marine biologist and she studies whales off the coast of maine. she has pictures of herself underwater with them. it's so awesome!

i hope NYC is not too crowded when we go. we're going in late may so i would hope not. we will see! i'm sure christmas/new years is the busiest time of the year.

Maybe not the best show ever (that has to go to Wicked!), but still awesome.

we've got tickets to see wicked!!!! i can't wait. i bought the soundtrack about a month ago and i love it.

this is what we're planning on doing. i think it will save us money instead of having to pay for cabs the whole time. i don't know about someone telling me not to talk though. i don't like being told what to do like i'm 5 years old. that's probably why i couldn't live in new york - my smart mouth would get me in trouble a lot!!!

But it wasn't night-time yet. That morning, we got up early to go up Top of The Rock, at Rockefeller Center. We had been up the Empire State Building in 2006, so we decided to give Top Of The Rock a go instead. So up we went!!

Mud buggying was awesome!! :thumbsup2 We got very muddy and dusty though! Thanks for stopping by, hope you enjoy the rest of my trip report!

Oooh, lucky you, having snow days!! I'd be so excited if we had snow days!! We have hot weather days sometimes, but it just means the kids stay inside in the air-conditioning instead of going outside at playtimes. Staying inside makes them even worse!!! :lmao:

Thank you for posting your wedding/honeymoon pics. They are great! You looked beautiful and have amazing wedding photos. Your Hawaii pictures took me down memory lane....and are making me want to go back SOONER! Not in the cards right now!

Can't wait for more popcorn::

Thanks for stopping by, Shelley!! popcorn::

loved the wedding pictures! you guys had a beautiful ceremony and your photographer did a great job. :thumbsup2

Thank you Dawn!! Our photographer was a bit bossy, but good!!

What a great job your friend has!! I was amazed at the whales in Hawaii. They were SO big and beautiful to watch! We totally spoke whale to them, like Dory. "Hellloooooooo whaaaaaaales!"

i hope NYC is not too crowded when we go. we're going in late may so i would hope not. we will see! i'm sure christmas/new years is the busiest time of the year.

I'm sure it'll be fine when you go. I think it was just crazy busy when we were there this time because it was between Christmas and New Years.

we've got tickets to see wicked!!!! i can't wait. i bought the soundtrack about a month ago and i love it.

Yayyyy!!! I'm sure you'll just love it!! It's my very favourite musical ever. I just LOVE the soundtrack!! If you're ever driving around Melbourne, Australia, and see a crazy girl singing really loudly in her car along with the Wicked soundtrack, that would be me. "I think I'll tryyyy defying gravity...." :rolleyes1

this is what we're planning on doing. i think it will save us money instead of having to pay for cabs the whole time. i don't know about someone telling me not to talk though. i don't like being told what to do like i'm 5 years old. that's probably why i couldn't live in new york - my smart mouth would get me in trouble a lot!!!

All the other tour guides we had were fine, don't worry! It's definitely a fun way to get around town. The buses come really frequently too - we never waited for more than 10 minutes.

we are thinking we're going to do this instead of the empire state building. i hear the views here are amazing, especially of central park. so cool that you got to see the snow!

Here's a couple more photos of the view from Top of the Rock for you, Dawn! We took these before it started to snow. It was quite early in the morning. First of all, Central Park...

IMG_8522.jpg

And this is looking the opposite direction, to the Empire State Building and Downtown. If you look really closely you can see the Statue of Liberty on the top island near the top right of the photo!

IMG_8523.jpg

And here's a closer view of the Empire State Building. So pretty!

I think I can understand why they would want to do that, but there's no way I could actually do it!! We were out there for 20 minutes and it felt like my fingers could snap off from the cold!! Brrrr!!!

Thanks again everybody, for stopping by and for all your nice comments!! I hope to write the Miami installment tomorrow night, so stay tuned!! :surfweb:

WOW! New York has always fascinated me. I just love all of those buildings and the business of it all. I definately want to get there someday. Especially at Christmas time so that I can see the Rockefeller center tree and ice skating rink!
So, your Hawaii pics brought back memories. Someone posted, earlier in your TR, about taking young kids. I wouldn't take them. There really isn't a whole lot for them to do. You can snorkel and hike, but my personal opinion is no small children. Plus, you want them to be able to remember that they went to Hawaii. Looks like you guys had a great time on your cruise!

Julie, I just love your trip reports because you two do so much more than just WDW. Caitlin and I went to NYC last summer for a journalism conference for high school students and we went on one of those double decker buses, too. It was the one thing Cait really wanted to do and we both had a blast.

You are just beautiful in your wedding photos--that dress is fabulous.

Oh, and you can come visit me any time in the winter and I'll be happy to share all my snow with you. :lmao: It was 5 degrees this morning--my face felt like it was frozen in place.

Can't wait to read more!

You definitely should go to New York!! All the Christmas decorations were beautiful. It was very exciting to see the big tree - just go early to beat the crowds!
I guess it depends on the child to determine whether they'd appreciate Hawaii or not. I'm pretty sure I would absolutely loved it! I loved the beach when I was little. And yes, we had a great time on our cruise!

Hi Amy!! :yay:
Ooh, I didn't know you and Caitlin went to New York recently! I'm glad you both enjoyed the red bus. You obviously didn't have our cranky tour guide! Hee!
Brrrr, 5 degrees!! I think I'd love the snow for the first few days (especially if I got days off work!), but not if it was that cold all the time. Hehehee. It's pretty though!!
Thanks for popping in to say hi!!

More trip report coming up soon, everybody! I must go and watch Lost now, but I'll be back soon with our Miami installment!

Oh no, more report? I haven't even replied to the last two yet!!!

I'll get on that in a bit. :laundy:
