Laughter, Tears & Screams- Two Aussies in WDW! New - 6/10 - The End!!

I love this room. It is awesome. Key West looks so beautiful. I can't imagine how much you put into to planning this whole trip and your wedding at the same time! Looks Like you all had a great time in Key West!

.

I tried to quote a picture of your room but it didn't work. Do you mind explaining to me how you do a quote form someones report?

Hey everybody!! It's a public holiday here in Melbourne today, so I get to play on the DIS boards in my pyjamas! Yayyyyy!!! :yay:

I completely agree with you...the laid back, island feel is what we loved about Key West, too. Our hotel was a few blocks from the Southermost Point monument, at the quiet end of Duval St. - on the other end from Mallory Square. We loved going there and seeing the sunsets - and all the sights! Great people watching!!

Hey!! Our B&B was on the quiet end of Duval Street too!! There were quite a few hotels around that area - I wonder if we saw yours!? We liked Mallory Square too - it was lots of fun!

so pretty! i want to drive out there some day. my parents went out to key west on my dad's harley the year before i was born. my mom says that trip was just crazy. they drove from nashville and went through new orleans so it was a LONG trip, especially on a motorcycle! sometimes i wonder if maybe i wasn't conceived on that trip. but then i remember that i'm thinking about my parents and i get grossed out!!!!! :lmao:

Ha!! You definitely should check out Key West then, especially if you were conceived there!! That IS a long way on a motorcycle, wow!! They did very well!

so cute!!! i love staying at B&Bs. we try to stay at them when we go to savannah and it's so nice to have nice owners that can recommend places to you. and they're usually so cute and personal - way more interesting than a hotel!

We stayed at a nice B&B in Savannah too. I agree with you - they're usually so lovely and homey! I love Savannah! :lovestruc

hope your legs got better!

They got better eventually!! You'll be able to see my red legs in some Disney photos. So embarrassing!!! :lmao:

Wow, what a great trip! Can't wait to read more.

Thanks! It really was a great trip!! Thanks for stopping by!! :woohoo:

I love all your photos from Miami and Key West. It all looks so relaxing. Your room was really pretty there in Key West, nice sunset too. I had to laugh about Conan being the designated driver. I could never trust my DH to do the driving in another country. Instead, he gets to yell at me to stay to the left. I feel Conan's pain! :rotfl:

I just wasn't brave enough to give driving a go in the US! At one stage I was all ready to go and hop into the driver seat, but I just couldn't do it! What if something happened!? I was a scaredy cat, I'm afraid!! Thanks for all your nice comments!

Ahhh...Key West. :cloud9:
We rented bikes while we were there and just rode everywhere we wanted to go. It was really nice.
We went snorkeling, too and it was one of the worst experiences of my life! Because I tend to get a bit seasick, we took a catamaran, which was supposed to be very stable. It was extremely wavy that day, but the captain said we would be fine. So we get out to wherever we were going, jump in the water and saw nothing but barracudas! And the waves were so big, I was getting seasick from the waves while I was IN the water. Needless to say, the trip back in was horrible. I was face down on the deck almost the whole time trying to keep it together. :scared:
The rest of our time there was great and I'd love to go back. :beach:

Oh noooo, sorry to hear about your snorkelling adventure!! What a disaster! Aren't barracudas dangerous!?! Yowza! Bike-riding, on the other hand, sounds lovely! We saw lots of people hiring bikes. It looked fun - if we were there for a couple more days, we probably would have hired bikes too.

I love this room. It is awesome. Key West looks so beautiful. I can't imagine how much you put into to planning this whole trip and your wedding at the same time! Looks Like you all had a great time in Key West!

We did spend a lot of time planning our trip, but this wasn't our honeymoon - we were married in 2007. So our trip was the only thing we planned this time, not our wedding too! But yes, Key West (and our room!) was really beautiful!

I tried to quote a picture of your room but it didn't work. Do you mind explaining to me how you do a quote form someones report?

Normally you just press the quote button on the bottom right of the message, then choose which photo you're quoting. I think you nearly had it right - keep practising, you'll get there! You can preview your message before you post it, to check to make sure it's quoting properly. Never mind!! Thanks for stopping by to say hi!! :yay:

More trip report coming up very soon!! The exciting part - we arrive at Disney!!!!

I think we were right by you. We stayed at the Reach Resort.
We are going on a cruise in April and I was hoping we could take the one that spent a day in Key West, but not this time. Definitely want to go back there in the future.

We loved Key West when we went during our Disney Cruise. Itw as troo short though!! I would loveto spend a couple days there like you did and actually get a feel of a night in Key West. I think it would be amazing!!

So our last night at Key West provided me with a restless night's sleep. Because my legs were ridiculously sunburnt and hot, but most importantly, because we were going to Disney World the next day! Yayyyyyyyy!!!! I was seriously just too excited to sleep!!

I kept thinking of all the fun things we'd do at Disney World, and what our first day would hold, and of all the yummy restaurants we'd try, and how pretty the Wilderness Lodge would be... It was all just way too exciting!! Does anybody ever get a good night's sleep before their Disney vacation!? Surely not!!

So it was my idea to drive from Key West to Disney World. Just because I thought it would be fun!! In 2006, we'd flown into Orlando and caught the Magical Express. That was fun too, but I wanted to do it a different way this time! Conan took a bit of extra convincing. The drive from Key West to Orlando would take at least 7 hours - that's a long time! Eventually he agreed that it would be fun and so we decided to keep our Alamo car for the first few days while we were at Disney, which meant we could drive to Seaworld and Universal while we were there. :yay:

My next mission was to convince Conan to leave Key West ridiculously early. Because who wants to waste a day at Disney!?! He started by saying we'd leave at 7am - quite sensible really. I pushed back his time to 6am. Hehee. But that morning, guess what time we left Key West!? 5.40am! Woohooooo!!! :woohoo:

I'm not a morning person in the slightest. In fact, I try to avoid mornings if I can. But not on the day we're going to Disney World!! I was up at 5am, ready and rearing to go. Conan was a bit less keen, but he knew how excited I was, so he was happy to get up and go too. Yayyy!

Here's our luggage, ready to be packed into the car...

IMG_8761.jpg

And here's Music, the B&B's cat, saying goodbye to us!

IMG_8764.jpg

And here's our little car and sleepy Conan, ready to start the big drive. Yep, it was still dark!!

IMG_8771.jpg

And so, we began our drive. Bye Key West, thanks for having us! It was actually quite lovely to be up and about before anybody else. The roads were very quiet, see!?

IMG_8773.jpg

We even got to watch the sun rise from Highway 1...

IMG_8784.jpg

Here's Conan, a bit more excited now that we were heading to Disney World!

IMG_8775.jpg

And me!! Sleepy but excited!

IMG_8781.jpg

We quite enjoyed our big road trip! We were armed with Red Bulls and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, and listened to funny Florida Keys radio stations along the way, who liked to play Kokomo by the Beach Boys a LOT!! Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama...

We stopped for a McDonalds brunch somewhere along the way. I really have no idea what the town was called, but it was one of our first experiences with small-town USA, and it was quite the experience! The girl serving at McDonalds really had no idea what I was saying. I know Australians have a pretty strong accent, but I didn't think we were that difficult to understand!! I ended up putting on an American accent to tell her that I wanted a cheeseburger, please!! :lmao:

The rest of our trip was pretty uneventful, really. We discussed what we'd do once we arrived at Disney - Magic Kingdom was our goal for the afternoon and evening, so we sorted out which rides we'd try to do first. So exciting!!

Before too long, we started to see the best road signs ever! You know the ones...

IMG_8791.jpg

Wahooooooooo!!!! :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo:

Our GPS system served us well, and very soon we saw this!!

IMG_8793.jpg

Yayyyyyyy!!! So exciting!!

I went a bit camera mad really. One of my favourite rides...

IMG_8796.jpg

Still on the way to the Wilderness Lodge...

IMG_8797.jpg

And then this purple sign...

IMG_8798.jpg

And finally....

IMG_8799.jpg

Wow!!! We'd really arrived!! I couldn't quite believe it really. It all felt a bit surreal! After so much planning, organising and dreaming, we'd finally made it to the Wilderness Lodge. And it was just as pretty as we'd hoped!

The security guy at the WL gate checked our details and said, "Welcome home!" to which we both giggled. We'd never been welcomed home before!! Nice!!

IMG_8800.jpg

It was about 1.45pm when we arrived, which made our trip an 8 hour adventure. A bit longer than we'd imagined, but at least we got there safe and sound! We found a great carpark, grabbed our suitcases, and headed inside for the very first time!

Next up... Checking in and our afternoon at Magic Kingdom! :yay:

new reader!

I also believe that planning the trip is part of the fun... I guess that makes me weird too! hehe. Who cares? As long as you're having fun right?

Love your wedding pics, beautiful!

As for the growling tour guide in NYC... hehe... that's so NYC. If she was chipper and happy go lucky.. then we have something to worry about. hehe.

Can't wait to read more about your 12 days of fun in Disney World!

Yay, you're back in WDW!:yay:

You poor thing with your sunburned legs! As a pasty white person who's spent a good part of her life living near the beach in Florida, I can totally sympathize with you.

I know just what you mean about the driving on the wrong side of the road, too. Hubby and I have taken trips to Ireland (where they drive on the left) a number of times, but I have yet to attempt driving there - I just let him do it. I do navigate, though. I love reading maps!

You did lots of cool things and stayed some very cute places so far. Can't wait to hear about WDW!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of the sunset on Route 1!

You two just look so happy. Isn't it the best to drive in & see those signs & then hear the best words Welcome Home. Although I would love to trade you that 8 hour drive for our 23 1/2 hour drive LOL

Ooohhh...I am so excited for you! The first day at Disney is always such an amazing day for me. I love the feeling that your whole Disney vacation is right ahead of you!

You made it! You're finally at the happiest place on earth!!!

DH's aunt (who was in Australia while you were here) said it took her a couple of days to be able to understand the accent because people spoke faster than she'd expected. Maybe the McDonalds worker was a slow talker! :lmao:

Did you plan this trip on your own or did you work with a travel agent (it seemed like you did for some of it~or was that the last trip)? The main thing I'm wondering is how you chose your hotels/B&Bs out of all the choices??? Wasn't it overwhelming???

Ooh, I don't know the Reach Resort... :confused3 It sounds nice though! Have fun on your cruise in April, lucky ducks!!

We loved Key West when we went during our Disney Cruise. Itw as troo short though!! I would loveto spend a couple days there like you did and actually get a feel of a night in Key West. I think it would be amazing!!

You should definitely visit Key West for a few nights! Lovely and relaxing!

i have to take melatonin the night before to get ANY sleep!
i can't wait to pull up and see this in december 2010!!! :goodvibes
YOU'RE IN DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!! :yay:

I like your idea of taking melatonin the night before Disney World!! I'd be scared I'd be sleepy the next day though!
Are you staying at WL in 2010? How exciting!

new reader!

Welcome!!! Thanks for popping in and for your nice comments!
You're right about the growling tour guide in NYC! We really just chuckled about her. She just added to the NYC experience really!! You lucky thing, you live in New York!! :yay:

Yay, you're back in WDW!:yay:

Hehee, thanks for the sunburn sympathy!! It was my own silly fault though really! Driving on the wrong side of the road is quite an experience, isn't it!? It must have been tricky in Ireland too - some of their roads are very narrow and bumpy!!

LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of the sunset on Route 1!

Thanks for your lovely comments! It's definitely a great feeling to see those signs and feel that you've really arrived at Disney World!! Wow, 23 and a half hours, that's a long drive! I hope you have stops along the way!! :scared1:

popcorn:: tuning in popcorn:: loved the pictures of key west, i would love to visit there sometime

Key West was very pretty!! And welcome!! popcorn::

Ooohhh...I am so excited for you! The first day at Disney is always such an amazing day for me. I love the feeling that your whole Disney vacation is right ahead of you!

It's a great feeling, isn't it!? We were a bit exhausted, but ridiculously excited!!

YAY! You are at WDW!!!

Yayyyy!!!! :yay:

I always thought Australians spoke pretty slowly! Well, I guess some do. Steve Irwin did!! :lmao:
We planned this trip by ourselves... It's just so much cheaper than doing it through a travel agent, and more importantly, much more fun!! I love planning! We read a few guidebooks who recommended hotels (Lonely Planet mostly), but also looked on travel guide websites who reviewed hotels, etc. We planned a long way in advance, so no, it wasn't really overwhelming! Fun!!

More trip report coming up soon!! Thank you to all my lovely readers!! :surfweb:

After we parked our car, we grabbed our luggage and headed into the Wilderness Lodge for the first time to check in. Yayyyyyy!!! We made some hairy friends on the way to the front entrance...

IMG_1143.jpg

And saw some very pretty flowers!

IMG_1145.jpg

I can see the front doors! Yahoooooo!!!

IMG_1146.jpg

Even floor mats are exciting at Disney World...

IMG_1147.jpg

And ta-daaaaah! Welcome to the Wilderness Lodge!!

IMG_1148.jpg

Wow, the lobby area was so pretty!! And BIG!! I couldn't get over how big and airy everything felt. What massive trees these must have been!

IMG_1150.jpg

We headed over to the check-in desk and stood in the very short line. It was only around 2pm at this stage, and check-in time wasn't until 3pm, so we didn't expect to be able to go to our room. Although we secretly hoped we might be able to!!

Our CM at the desk was very friendly, but alas, our room wasn't quite ready yet. Oh well! We had Magic Kingdom to explore, anyway! But there was some good news! She couldn't tell us our exact room number yet, but she did tell us we had an excellent room on the fifth floor with a courtyard view and a king-size bed. Woohooooo!!!

Originally, we'd booked a Woods View room, so this was definitely an upgrade! And a king-size bed suited us perfectly. We only have a queen-sized bed at home so it's always so luxurious and comfy to stay in a king-size bed!! :cool1:

We were given a number to call later to find out when our room was ready, but we had plans to head to Magic Kingdom anyway, for some rides, dinner and Wishes. We found the bellhop dude and left our suitcases with him, before heading back into the lobby to continue my photo spree! It was nice to explore the Wilderness Lodge a little bit.

IMG_1152.jpg

We loved this little bridge throughout our stay!

IMG_1153.jpg

A massive totem pole!

IMG_1151.jpg

The whoppin' big fireplace...

IMG_1156.jpg

IMG_1155.jpg

Firewood, anybody!?

IMG_1158.jpg

So far, so good! We'd never actually visited the Wilderness Lodge before, so I didn't really know what to expect. It really is such a gorgeous resort. It felt so homey and comfortable, with lots of little extra details to explore.

After checking out the lobby and sitting down for a little 10 minute rest, we decided it was Magic Kingdom time!

To be continued...!

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that photographs the floor mats at Disney! :lmao: Hope your room view was as nice as the CM said it would be (I'm sure it was). We love WL too...very cozy and you feel so at home there.

We contemplated driving to the Magic Kingdom, but then quickly decided, no!! It was time for our first Disney bus adventure for 2009!! I love Disney buses. Isn't there something just so exciting and inviting about them!? We looked around a little bit before working out where to go to catch the buses, and headed there straight away with a spring in a step and a smile on our faces!!

There was hardly anybody else waiting for the buses, since it was about 2.15. I guess everybody was already at the parks! We didn't have to wait long for the bus to Magic Kingdom - only about a 5 minute wait. Actually, we always had pretty good luck with buses while staying at the WL. :thumbsup2

Here's Conan hopping on the bus for our first time this trip!

IMG_8801.jpg

On our way to Magic Kingdom!! :yay: :woohoo: :yay:

IMG_8802.jpg

We were pleasantly surprised at how quickly the bus trip to Magic Kingdom was. So short! Before we knew it, we were there!

(Oh-oh, beware of my sunburnt legs in the following photo!!)

IMG_8804.jpg

Yeowch!! Yes, my legs were still hurting a lot, but nothing hurts as much when you're at Disney, does it!?

We wandered down Main Street in a happy blur. That happy walk really just reinforces the fact that you've arrived in Disney, doesn't it!?! Wow!! It still felt a bit surreal, actually! We were really here! At Disney World!!!

I just love looking around at all the cute little stores and funny comments in the 2nd floor windows! There were quite a few times when I would stop to look at something, in my own happy little world, then suddenly realise, "Whoops, Conan is still walking!" and I'd have to run to catch up with him. :tiptoe:

We headed up towards the castle for a closer look, even though it was already surrounded by people. Who can resist the castle!? It's just so pretty!

IMG_1124.jpg

Hello, Walt and Mickey!! Thanks for having us!!

IMG_1134.jpg

Conan found his favourite little buddies...

IMG_1130.jpg

And I found one of my favourites, too!

IMG_1131.jpg

So now comes the big decision - where would we go first!!? Luckily, we'd had 8 hours to discuss the choice in the car, and knew exactly where we were headed. To Tomorrowland we go!!!! :woohoo:

IMG_8806.jpg

When we visited in 2006, Buzz Lightyear was one of our favourite rides, so we'd decided to head their first. This wasn't our only planned day at Magic Kingdom - we had another full day there planned, as well as another evening - so there was no rush, really. We just wanted to look around and take everything in!

Buzz had a 20 minute wait, so we decided to grab Fastpasses instead. Why not!? The return time was only 30 minutes away, so we decided to head to Tomorrowland Transit Authority while we waited!! For some reason, we just love this ride. It's so relaxing and there's never a line! I would never have thought it would be our first ride at Disney World this trip, but there you have it!! :lmao:

Love those blue vinyl seats!! So comfy!

IMG_8807.jpg

We still had a little while to wait for our Fastpass window, so we headed to Monsters Inc Laugh Floor. This was a new attraction for us, and we both love Monsters Inc, so we were looking forward to it. Plus, Conan got to be on the big screen!! We'd just found a seat and were looking around the theatre with blank looks on our faces, when ta-daaah! There's Conan on the big screen! The caption underneath his face read - "He just saw a tiny monster", which really didn't match with Conan's blank expression!! We got a good giggle out of it, anyway! :lmao:

We both enjoyed the show, especially the crowd interaction. Very cute! I took a photo, even though I wasn't meant to. Whoops!! I had somehow missed all the signs and messages telling me "No cameras!" Shhh, don't tell Mike.

IMG_8811.jpg

And then it was Buzz time!!! Conan always, always beats me at Buzz Lightyear. I really don't even know what I'm doing. I find it really hard to find my red laser dot amongst everybody else's, but I still think it's lots of fun! Here's Conan concentrating very hard to shoot his laser at the aliens...

IMG_8814.jpg

And here we are!! So serious!!

IMG_8816.jpg

We decided to go for a little wander after that, over to Adventureland. Our goal was to ride the Jungle Cruise, but there was a 50 minute wait and the Fastpass machines weren't running, so we decided on the Magic Carpets of Aladdin instead! We hadn't ridden them before and they were right there, with hardly any wait. :thumbsup2

Here we are, enjoying the ride! We successfully avoided the spitting camels, phew!

IMG_8818.jpg

So far, it had been a very fun afternoon!!! The crowds weren't too bad, and we were having a blast on the rides, even though we were starting to get a bit sleepy after an early start. :yay:

Next up... our dinner at The Plaza, and the rest of our evening at Magic Kingdom!

yes, we are staying at the wilderness lodge when we go back next time. we're renting DVC points and staying at the villas. i can't wait! only 1 year and 9 months to go! :rotfl:

great pictures of WL. i didn't know you hadn't been there before. isn't it so pretty?! i hope you took the boat to/from MK at some point - it's such a pretty area where the boat docks. and arrival at MK is the BEST!
