Wow....that's alot of drama!

Last year cost me

$500 for dress
$40 for shoes
$80 for hair
did her own make up
$20-25 for jewerly
$20 prom ticket

Last year's prom dress

This year she is going to 2 proms...one in ND with hr friends and one in Texas with her school.

$75 for dress on sale
$? for shoes...I think she already had them
prom ticket is bought from shool
riding to prom with some friends
doing her own hair make up
$? getting dress drycleaned for prom 2

Here's Prom #1 this year in North Dakota

WOW, I would have a hard time letting her out of the house. She is BEAUTIFUL!!!

As for the OP, sorry, I'm a bad mom, I wouldn't go through all of that for a prom. I don't think it makes anyone a good mom or parent to give in to a child's every desire. Maybe it is a regional thing but I have never heard of hiring someone to come to your house to do make-up, let alone having to spend $200 on top of that to BUY the make-up.

A "better" daughter? Actually I don't think I'm a better or worse Mom then anyone else....just a Mom who, I'm sure like everyone else, uses their best judgment in figuring out what is the best course of action for the situation for their child.

I can dote on my nieces and nephews and would do some of the same running around for them that you listed, the difference is simply regional pricing and traditions.

Driving 40 miles a couple different times in the same week, been there, done that.

I never felt that come through. I apologize if my comments made you feel that way.

And, quite honestly.....I also don't think my daughter is any better or worse than yours. I'm sure they are both pretty terrific.

I was more amazed at the regional differences in pricing and prom traditions. The kids here even look for coupons or specials when they go out to dinner.

I am so glad I missed my senior prom.. The didn't make maternity prom dresses.

Sure they did....I had a friend who went to her Senior Prom in 1986 who was pregnant with number 2!!

Okay, those bouquets are beautiful, but I totally don't get it. At least with a corsage, you wear that the whole night and it gets "seen." I'm sure those bouquets are only used for pictures and then tossed aside. I'm sure the florists love the fact that everybody in your area thinks they just "have" to have a bouquet instead of a corsage.

The bouquets are really in where I live. Here's my DS's girlfriend's:

It wasn't horribly outrageous in cost. It was high, but that was my own fault. The florist was showing me pictures in a book of all the different types and I was seeing prices around $100, 120 and even more. She asked me what I wanted to pay and I said around $50 or less, and she later said she tried to keep the bouquets low for people... in the $20-30 range. By that point I'd already told her $50, so I didn't want to go back on it, even though she would have been perfectly sweet about it.

You're a great mom. I hope your DD's prom night is really enjoyable!! Be sure to post pictures-- after all her primping and money spending, we want to see how gorgeous she looks!!

I went to my DFiance's Senior Prom and then we went to mine. His prom was pretty cheap.
Tickets: $50 a piece (he paid..)
Dinner: some horrible chinese place that we went with his friends (he paid..)
Corsage: he paid again..
Breakfast the next morning: at someone's house
Limo: I think we both paid $70??
My Dress: I got on sale for like $60-- it was gorgeous!

Hmm.. maybe I thought his prom was cheap because HE paid!!

My prom on the other hand...
Tickets: $85 a piece (we got in for free- my mom was a teacher)
Dinner: included
My dress: $20 on sale!! I'm a good bargin hunter
Limo: free- my friend's dad owned a limo place
Corsage: $30-- would've been $40 but the florist messed up? Apparently she used wrong color creme? That's what she told DFiance.
After prom: WE WENT TO DISNEY WORLD. That was all I wanted to do- I didn't care about the hotel room or drunken after parties. So, we got in the car the next morning- like 3am after going home, taking a powernap, etc. and we drove our butts to MK and then came back that night!

It was so much fun.

Just out of curiosity...how long do kids in your area stay at the prom? It's incredibly frustrating that at the school I teach at they only stay for about 1 1/2 hours max before leaving to go eat in their dresses. The junior class spends two years fundraising, buys $5000 worth of decorations, devotes two whole days transforming our cafeteria into a prom worthy venue and then they leave by 9 pm.

Every year I say it's ridiculous and we should change it, but nothing ever happens.

nope, although I don't think they were actually attending the prom, they were underclassmen that helped with the prom, there were other wrist corsages though

The junior class spends two years fundraising, buys $5000 worth of decorations, devotes two whole days transforming our cafeteria into a prom worthy venue and then they leave by 9 pm.

Every year I say it's ridiculous and we should change it, but nothing ever happens.

the prom I shot was rather nice.. they start out with "the grand march"

parents /friends etc are seated in the HS auditorium, the couples are announced 1 by 1, they enter the stage from opposite sides meet in the middle walk forward, stop half way for photo op, walk forward some more stop again for photo op, then leave the stage,,

when that is over parents leave.. students proceed to the gym which was very nicely decorated so that unless you looked at the floor, you forgot you were in a gym, there they were served a catered dinner, which was pretty good, the DJ, the videographer , and I were also served..they had ham.turkey,stuffing mashed potatos,corn,gravy..

after dinner there was a sundae bar, , then the dancing started, after the prom, the post prom party was held at the local bowling alley, I'm not sure how that was, I had another shoot the next day so I went home after the prom..

Wow! So that's typical prom in NYC? I've always known "big city livin" wasn't for me - now here's more proof!

I've gone through it with both my daughter and my son and I've gotta say, it was like you described IN NO WAY!!! Sure, there were dresses to buy or tux rentals, shoes, hair, jewelry, dinner, etc. but that's where the similarity ends.
Around here, weddings don't get all the attention that prom seems to for you!

My son went to his senior prom last weekend. He and his friends made all their plans less than a week before. They all went to dinner, to the prom, and then afterward they all went to........ wait for it...........
















TACO BELL!!!!

And to hear them talk, they had the time of their lives! Guess they don't know what they're missing...

The senior prom is a long night here. It includes dinner and dancing afterwards. If I remember it ended at midnight. Then the kids came home, changed into comfy clothes and headed over to the highschool for the after prom party that went on until 4am. After prom was more food (snacks) games, contests and drawing for prizes. This last year one of the prizes was a 3 month lease on a Jeep.

I love reading how different each region handles prom....Since I graduated from the same HS as my girls I can see how things have changed in the last 20 years....which isn't much.

For those with boys who are thankful they don't have girls...it was actually more expensive for the boys in my daughters group then the girls and they were frugal with their money.

The best of all of these traditions?? Most people have wonderful memories that are priceless. (My senior prom stunk up a storm)

I remember proms where the kids rushed to reserve the party room at McDonalds for their prom night dinner- they had a blast!!

That actually sounds like a lot of fun for everyone involved.

most of the kids seemed to have a great time, lst years post prom was at the high school,,they get local businesses to donate, and have prizes for the kids,,this year each kid attending the post prom party recived a gift card, plus they could win prizes with various competitions etc..

the local bowling alley only charged 15 per kid to rent the alley for the night..
