latest thoughts on Ivan?

....the impact our stay in Central FL might have on valuable resources needed for residents (our need for gas, water, etc)
I can't even tell you how unselfish and kind you are being thinking this way. I can't speak for all Floridians, but thank you. I hope you have the best trip ever when you do return.

I agree with you on that. It is very thoughtful. Enjoy your trip when do do return!

I'm still planning on coming to WDW for my vacation on Sunday, but for me, it's probably the best solution.

I live in St. Petersburg, FL (just west of Tampa) and Ivan looks like it's going to make it's impact on this area. I'm in evacuation zone B, so we will probably end up being evacuated anyway. So, why not just go to Orlando. I do feel bad for my brother and his family, because they are flying here from Chicago. But, it's my 4 month old daughter's baptism on Sunday, and they didn't want to miss it. Then, we're heading to Disney on Sunday afternoon. We'll just board up the windows and head out of the area.

See you in WDW in just a few days!!!

Amy

My cousins live in Tampa too, and they are going to stay with us at Homewood Suites. Now I am REALLY glad that we decided on this hotel (it was just DH and myself). I told them if they needed to, they could be with us and now they are coming. It is better for them.

Does anyone think that Ivan will affect LBV drastically? Or will it just be wind and rain like the last two? Will it be worse? I know it is all speculation at this point, but I am getting antsy...

In the last few updates to the projection on the nhc's site (which updates at 5 and 11), Ivan has slightly shifted West each time. As of the 5pm projection today, it is now showing it will make landfall in the panhandle of Florida. I hope it keeps jogging further West (sorry Gulf states!) and Floriday doesn't get anything, but right now they eye of the storm will not go over the bulk of Florida. The storm is big, so obviously the effects will still be felt, but I read that the area with the strongest storms is smaller than Frances, which means that less of the really strong winds would effect Florida. Of course this is all today. It's showing that it won't hit land until Tuesday, so a lot can change between now and then.

*gives B'rer Karen a hug*

You made me feel better, even if you weren't intending too...thank you!!! :chat: :grouphug:

I was so relieved last night when DH was able to talk his parents out of flying from new england to go on the trip even after we bailed out and rescheduled. They were at first going to go with or without us, but we were able to talk them out of it.

Tomorrow is DFIL's b-day and I know he will be very sad that we won't be together, but we're trying to talk them into going on the rescheduled trip with us in November.

In the meantime, we are consoling ourselves thinking that the two hotel rooms we would have had, one at CR and one at PORS, will hopefully go to FL families who need a safer place from the storm.

Safetymom, Ted, have been thinking of you and hoping you are all safe!

We live in the Midwest, today we went out to lunch to cheer up (we would have been on the plane to MCO) and at the next table was a group of seniors. One lady says to another "When are you going back to Florida?" and she said "I don't know, we have nothing to go back to." They were from Punta Gorda and their place blew away :(

Really helps put things in perspective when you think that most of us are talking about vacations here, and people from FL are talking about their lives and the roof over their heads.

It's very humbling.

Still hoping Ivan changes his itinerary and decides he would rather spin fish in the Atlantic!

Yes. Here's hoping that all Florida DISers (well, all Floridians too) stay safe.
And :grouphug: *hugs* to you guys while you wait to see what Ivan does. The waiting must be torture.

We are going on sept 26...hope all the hurricanes are gone by then. Can't wait !! This will be my 12th trip since 1990. Love that place!!!:Pinkbounc

We live in Panama City and if Ivan heads for Pensacola as is predicted at this time, we will be on the east side of the storm and probably get the same type of winds, etc that Opal brought us in 95.

At this point my DH has decided to go ahead and stay. The AFB has no current evacuation plans at this time and he feels we will be okay. In fact we know the people who we bought our house from and she said they stayed during Opal with no problems.

We do have lights and such and our stove and hot water heater are gas so if we lose electricity we will still be okay.

I will be saying prayers for those that are in the line of Ivan at this time and hope that it moves a little further west.

Noooo! NOT WEST! Lets just hope it weakens and doesn't give any of us much trouble.

Sorry angey77, wasn't wishing Ivan on LA, but maybe TX or even Mexico or as you said, maybe it will weaken enough that it won't give too much trouble to anyone.

The schools are going to be closed for Tues, Wed & Thurs, county wide and right now, I have to work Tues, but don't know about Wed or Thur. We were thinking if we have to evacuate, then maybe we would head toward Disney. At least we would be going in the opposite direction of Ivan. With our seasonal passes, it would be a nice unexpected trip. We would have to do the drive with two cats and a dog, but I told DH we would have to get tranquilizers for the cats. He said we could strap them to the roof and we would have our own sirens. (not funny - but the way they meow while in the car, that would be almost true).

ROTFL! Reminds me of our trips up North with our cat in tow. Meowing the whole way!

Best wishes to you, Maridw - hpe all works out okay!

my official last post before I have to report to the hospital. The feeling here in Pensacola ranges from, "gonna be nothing" to "we are all going to die, why are we staying?". No joke, I am leaning to gloom and doom. for those of you out there who believe in prayer, please pray for all of us on panhandle and beyond. I can't tell you the feeling off walking through your house picking what is important enough to box and take with me. I guess all Florida residents have a common bond...I can't help but feel jealous of eveyone on the boards talking about their upcoming trips....kbkids and all of us on the boards from the panhandle, we will be ok!!!
thanks to everyone out there for their support. I just hope this things blows a tire, I don't wish this monster on anybody.
l:wave:

Hey Maridw !!

I am from Panama City also !! We are all just watching and waiting like you for 'ol Ivan to see what he is going to do.
I am hoping it keeps going further west !!

We are headed for Disney in 2 weeks.... I am feeling EXTRA guilty now about taking boys out of school since we will be out the rest of the week. Hopefully we won't have to reschedule our trip

Be safe in the storm !! It is nice to see someone else from PC on the dis !!

like I'll be one fo the few meterologists online that can actually get this thing right. I said back on the 8th that it looked to me like most of Florida would be in the clear and that the hurricane would likely hit further west, possibly New Orleans. Now I hope I'm wrong about New Orleans.

God Bless everyone down in Florida, and I'll keep saying a little prayer that Ivan will take a powder and poop out before it does anymore damage.

Don't want to disagree but it would be foolish to have ignored Ivan in FL.

I am glad that all the forecasters here did their forecasts with the idea that it could hit FL.

Better to be prepared than caught off guard.

If Ivan hits where they are guessing now (New Orleans, Fl panhandle, etc...) how far of a radius do you think the heavy rain and winds will have? Do you think it will extend all the way out to the east coast? I'm asking because we will be driving to Disney down I-95 on Friday morning around 4:00am through Friday evening around 7:00pm. I'm wondering how bad the weather will be that we will be driving through. It looks like we will hit it around North/South Carolina if it continues at the speed that they are predicting.

Thanks :teeth:

Well, most of New Orleans and the surrounding area is on voluntary evacuation and some parts even under mandatory evacution. Some interstates are even being shut down heading that way (I-55).
My fiance' works as a computer programmer and I guess him writing a program for the company is more important than his safety since Baton Rouge is going to take a nice hit too more than likely.
I have the car packed and ready. If he gets word by tomorrow, we are heading early to WDW.
