Hi--my family is considering a visit in late September (possibly starting the 19th); it will be our DS's first visit and his almost-Third Birthday trip!

Of course, money is tight, and I'm trying to find out if a Magic Your Way package is cheaper than buying someone's DVC points. Is this crazy/am I missing something obvious? Good place to compare prices?

Any insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

It all depends on where you want to stay. Value?mod?deluxe? You can rent points and stay at animal kingdom lodge in a studio for 1200 a week. Which is way cheaper than deluxe and moderate. I'd head over to David's dvc rental and compare prices.

I can't answer your question, but... You might also want to factor in how a possible free dining promotion might affect your prices.

You might also want to check the DVC board here on the dis for possibly some better prices per point. I've had all great experiences renting from Dissers in the last five years. But, as the above poster mentioned, free dining might be a good option, paying rack rate but with free dining plan can save money for some families. On the other hand, my DD24 and I have found that paying OOP (out of pocket) vs. using a dining plan saves us money. We like getting a deluxe for closer to value prices for a studio room - perfect for a small family of two adults and a child.

We've stayed at a moderate with free dining on a few of our trips and it always ends up being cheaper than renting points and paying for food OOP. it will save you money if you really want to stay in as deluxe resort, but you can save money if you are willing to stay at a value or moderate.

Just so you know when you rent DVC through David's (and many owners) it is non refundable so I would make certain that your travel dates are set. That being said if you want to stay at a deluxe resort renting DVC points is significantly cheaper than booking through Didney. September is the cheapest DVC "season" so it would be the lowest cost time but as it is only 5 months away the sooner you decide to book the better (avail at many resorts dramatically changes under 7 months since DVC owners can book any resort not just their home resort). IF you aren't sure about going though you may want to wait and see if Disndy offers free dining in Sept (I guess usually they release info in early May-staying at a value resort with "free" dining will probably be the cheapest option (get 2 counter service meals + snack per day per person and refillable mug)-have to pay rack rates but dining plan cost is $42 per person per day 10 years and older and $16-17 per person per day ages 3-9

I agree with others that free dining is a huge savings, even if it is The QS dining plan. I would have to say that if budgeting is an important part than I would see if FD is being offered this fall. Have a wonderful trip!

We are renting points for Nov, for a 1 bedroom in Bay Lake Towers. Even if free dining comes out, we save more money renting points. But do the math and see what works best for you.

OP - Really depends on where you want to stay. Renting DVC points will be guaranteed to be cheaper than villa rack rates, pretty much always be cheaper than deluxe rates, may or may not be cheaper than moderate, and will probably cost more than value. Looking at rates for late Sept, All Star Movies is less than $134 per night. Caribbean Beach is less than $226 per night for that same time period, AKL $342/$423 (depending on exact dates), and AKLV Studio at Kidani $421/$476. Those were pulled from the rack rates listed on MouseSavers for the cheapest cat, with non villas showing weekend prices. David's DVC rentals will cost you $14 per point minimum with a $2 surcharge depending on resort. A studio at OKW would be 13 points per night, and one at SSR would be 15 per night. (Once again, dealing with just weekend prices here, weekdays are less). A 1BR villa would be 26 and 29 respectively at OKW/SSR. So 13x$14= $182, 15x$14= $210, 26x$14= $364, 29X$14= $406. So both studio prices are definitely more than All Stars, slightly less than Caribbean Beach, and well less than AKL/AKLV rack. The 1BR costs more in most cases, but will include a full kitchen as well as washer dryer. Remember, the studios only come with one bed, so people 3&4 sleep on a pullout, no washer/dryer and only have a kitchenette. Not going to run all the numbers, but that should give you an idea on how to compare. David's has a cost calculator on their site, so you can easily select your dates and see the costs for the different resorts, then just compare that to the numbers the WDW site returns for a regular room. Other rental companies may charge less, and most rentals direct from owners cost less, but come with higher risk. PP's already mentioned things like thinking about potential free dining or even just a room discount, so keep those in mind when looking at numbers.

Thanks! I mean if that price is accurate that sounds amazing. Of course we always WANT to stay at a Deluxe but this go-round we were thinking Value. I'll have to check out David's!

Amazingly helpful, thanks! Especially because I'm awful at math.

Yeah I guess at this point it's a matter of seeing if we can get an acceptable upgrade at a similar cost. So much to consider...

And if you rent DVC points, do you get the same amenities as you would staying on property the traditional way? Magical Express, access to the pool at Caribbean Beach ( for instance), etc.?

Thanks! We don't eat much as-is, but even less at Disney--too busy running around. And now with an almost- three year old I'm sure we'll be doing nothing BUT running around!

If renting DVC points you are considered a WDW resort guest and eligible for all the Disney amenities - ie. ME, EMH, MB, etc. If you want a dining plan the owner has to arrange that and you pay them. BUT you do NOT get daily housekeeping. DVC is a timeshare, not a hotel and as such has limited service. Depending on the length of stay - if you are 7 nights or less you get a "Trash & Tidy" on day 4. They empty the trash, refill toiletries, but the linens are not changed the bathrooms are not cleaned etc. 8 or more nights you get full cleaning on day 4 and trash and tidy on day 8. You will not have access to the pool at CBR.
As a renter you are not eligible for DVC perks

Just want to point out though, September is not far off! I'm not sure how long you are going for, but if you start September 19th the only resorts available for a week straight are SSR and OKW.The rest of the resorts only have partial availability. So don't go into it thinking you want Beach Club or Bay Lake at this late of date.

Price is accurate for standard view studio in sept ($14 pp *81 points=$1134)-savannah view would be a few hundred more-BUT last weekend in Sept is currently unavailable at kidani village and jambo house has even less availibilty that week.
DVC really books up far in advance unlike regular Disney hotels.
