If you push him, and he gets rescued, 9 times out of 10 most families are going to take the boy's side over the dogs. But if you just turn your back the first time he needs help, no one will know anything.

And then when Timmy has passed on, the family is going to need a lot of comfort, and as a dog they'd be showering you with extra attention.

At least that's how I'd play it, hypothetically.
