Seriously though...if I were a dog and Timmy kept getting in trouble and I had to keep rescuing him...I would push him down the well too.
If you push him, and he gets rescued, 9 times out of 10 most families are going to take the boy's side over the dogs. And then when Timmy has passed on, the family is going to need a lot of comfort, and as a dog they'd be showering you with extra attention.
At least that's how I'd play it, hypothetically.
