Late 70's early 80's girls

All the girls have it easy! The styles are coming back.

We are thinking of going along the lines of Duckie from Pretty in Pink. Or DH's look of skinny jeans, a purple shirt and a skinny tie.

Or do we go the punk route? And wasn't grunge late 80's or more early 90's?

I graduated in 88 and grunge did not come in into 90 or 91. In 88, guys wore JAMS shorts with band/rock tshirts. The prom/dance fashion was Miami Vice look.. the pink, blue, yellow suits without collars with looser shirts. Converse sneakers were big.. some of the guys wore yellow, pink or black sneakers.

As for the punk look-- I was one and can say with authority what "punk" kids wore:

Guys, army jackets with chains and either Doc Marten or combat boots. Jeans were ripped and held togheter with safety pins. guys would wear vintage Tshirts or items from the late 70s bought from the thrift store --(but nothing disco!) Some guys wore Army clothes.. like the green pants tucked in with combat boots. Guys hair looked like Roberts Smith fromt the Cure or JOn Cryers look from Pretty in Pink. Not many punk guys had actually spiked hair-- that was being a poseur!

There were more "artsy" guys-- not exactly punk but wore more fashionable outfits that were more retro without the 80s influence. While some guys were wearing muscle shirts and acid wash jeans, these guys would dress nicely and a little more consevative but nice. (Ducky character is a great guage of that! )

Girls-- layered look, usually black. Think about the Ally Sheedy character in Breakfast Club and see how she is dressed and her makeup. I wore heavy black eyemakeup that usually were curved up into a Cleopatra curl.

Not only on the soles but also on my Chuck Taylors themselves, as well as my jeans. My mom wasn't amused.

OMG someone else remembers them?! I wish they still made them because I'd buy them in a heartbeat.

Yeah, they still make them. My niece is a college freshman (extremely preppy) and came in last Christmas '08 in a pair. I was shocked!! She was still wearing them this christmas '09.

And you weren't anybody if you didn't have Nike sneakers. I can remember DYING for a pair of white leather ones with a red swoosh. I was in 6th grade, and my parents wouldn't buy them for me until my Thom McCann's wore out. I did everything in my power to mutilate those suckers! :lmao: By the time I got my Nikes, EVERYBODY had them. :sad2:

Oh those darned white Nikes with the red swoosh. When I started HS, everyone who was anyone had those sneakers. My parents could have afforded them but they were not going to spend $26.00 on a pair of nylon sneakers. I begged, said I'd pay half, etc. Nope. got Traxx from Kmart. :( I'm 45 and was what 14/15 then? And I still remember that. :(

Everyone was wearing those sneakers, girl's Levis, and carrying an Aigner handbag. If you didn't have those three things you were a nobody. I didn't even have a single one. ;)

I liked Short and Sassy shampoo too.

I had forgotten all about that balsam shampoo til you mentioned it, and now it's like I can totally smell it! I remember using it when I was probably 7-8 or so after swim practice, so the smell's a little chlorine-tainted. But yeah, I remember the shape of the bottle, the golden amber color of the shampoo... I love nostalgia.

ETA: That reminded me of something else...did anyone else have the shoelaces that had sayings on them? I didn't, but I have this vivid memory of being at the pool in the summer, smelling the suntan lotion that always smelled like coconut macaroons, and seeing an older girl who had shoelaces that said "I ♥ General Hospital" on them. I thought she was so cool.

I believe I did have those I 'heart' General Hospital laces.

And what was the shampoo with the commercial "And she'll tell 2 friends and so on and so on".....???

Maybe go Michael Jackson and get a red zippery jacket!

You know there was a parent at my DDs school parent night who really looked the part. He is about 50 and he was wearing skinny jeans and a purple zebra striped tight tshirt. Very oingo boingo. LOL.

One of my favorite movies! I loved the clothes Andie(Molly Ringwald) wore!

On a side note, Andrew McCarthy...:cloud9:

I liked Short and Sassy shampoo too.

I used Long & Silky conditioner. That's one product I'd love to use again!

Love this thread!!!

I need help though! DS13 is having 80's day on Friday for an 8th grade fundraiser. I need to pick a theme for him to dress up. The kids picked the theme and they have no idea what people even wore in the 80's!

Oh My God you have to give him Flock of Seagulls hair!!!

Yep, grunge was early- to mid-90s. The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit," which really catapulted grunge into the forefront of mainstream music, was released in October-ish, 1991. It was my freshman year in college, and I remember dancing like a maniac to that song at fraternity parties and loving every second of it. :goodvibes When I got my iPhone, that was one of the first music videos I bought from iTunes.

The early 80's was very preppy. Khaki pants, white button up shirt, argyle sweater and penny loafers. You can find all of this in the stores for boys now so that is easy.

I'm not home now, but I'll crack open my yearbooks when I get home and check out what the guys were wearing then. I do remember some preppiness, like Polos or Polo button-down shirts with jeans or khakis, but that's all I remember.

Speaking of back in the day clothing, I'd love to know where I could still buy those old running shorts (Hot pants- I guess)

I found a photo in a 1980's flickr group. Type in "Julie and Friend" on Flickr and its the first photo. I would love to find those again!

I don't know, but a dude at my gym still runs in them. It's terrifying. One day, he was stretching next to the track and bent over right in front of me; I about swallowed my tongue. :scared1:

The Cosby Show and Saved by the Bell are two pretty good references. They both started in the mid to late eighties.

"Everybody" wore those, men included! I had several pair made of satin with a white "stripe" on the side seam.

Those things were short and frequently needed to be kept in check. One wrong move....oops! ;)

OMG, that reminds me...I totally have pics of me in those at the Magic Kingdom in probably 1982-3. Had high tube socks with them and everything. I was HOT. :rotfl:

Did anyone mention "Sun-In" yet? Call me Bozo. :lmao:
Loved it! Used it religiously

The short shorts with the tube socks :lmao: I came across an old Polaroid photo, I was about 14, standing in front of a Ford Pinto that my Uncles who were visiting must have rented. I had feathered bangs, blue short shorts with the white piping/trim, tube socks with a stripe and baby blue Nikes with a white swoosh............sizzling hot I was

I remember those shoes, they were my first Nikes and I saved my babysitting money for eons to buy them. Got them at JC Penneys

That would have been right about 1979/1980 or thereabouts (I think) I'm guessing at my age but I had shorter hair in middle school and longer hair by high school so I think it was close to Freshman year

I have 80s pics of me in Epcot with the characters in the silver, shiny material. I guess they were supposed to be in space suits? I had on some sweet white sunglasses that were covered in paint splatters.
