All the girls have it easy! The styles are coming back.
We are thinking of going along the lines of Duckie from Pretty in Pink. Or DH's look of skinny jeans, a purple shirt and a skinny tie.
Or do we go the punk route? And wasn't grunge late 80's or more early 90's?
I graduated in 88 and grunge did not come in into 90 or 91. In 88, guys wore JAMS shorts with band/rock tshirts. The prom/dance fashion was Miami Vice look.. the pink, blue, yellow suits without collars with looser shirts. Converse sneakers were big.. some of the guys wore yellow, pink or black sneakers.
As for the punk look-- I was one and can say with authority what "punk" kids wore:
Guys, army jackets with chains and either Doc Marten or combat boots. Jeans were ripped and held togheter with safety pins. guys would wear vintage Tshirts or items from the late 70s bought from the thrift store --(but nothing disco!) Some guys wore Army clothes.. like the green pants tucked in with combat boots. Guys hair looked like Roberts Smith fromt the Cure or JOn Cryers look from Pretty in Pink. Not many punk guys had actually spiked hair-- that was being a poseur!
There were more "artsy" guys-- not exactly punk but wore more fashionable outfits that were more retro without the 80s influence. While some guys were wearing muscle shirts and acid wash jeans, these guys would dress nicely and a little more consevative but nice. (Ducky character is a great guage of that! )
Girls-- layered look, usually black. Think about the Ally Sheedy character in Breakfast Club and see how she is dressed and her makeup. I wore heavy black eyemakeup that usually were curved up into a Cleopatra curl.
