Today has ranked up there with one of the worst days of my life! :sad1:

Let me start back on Friday....

Friday DH called me at work at 12:30. Our neighbor's daughter had just called him. Her dad, our dear friend and neighbor, had a heart attack and was being flown from our hospital to Charlotte. He is only 56! So needless to say, my day at work was not a good one and I was a basket-case all day. Matthew is very close to Bill and I knew how hard it was going to be on him - he and Bill are buddies!

Right when I got home (at 8:30 p.m.) I heard from his wife that he was doing okay. He had a stint put in and he will have to go back in 4-6 weeks to have by-pass surgery but the prognosis is good. He was in Intensive Care Friday night and moved to a regular room yesterday. He was feeling well enough Friday night, even though he was in intensive care, that his wife, Mary Helen, came home.

Yesterday his wife and their daughter went to Charlotte to visit him and he was doing good.

Today Andrew and I went out driving. We left around 2:30. DH has not been feeling well and he had been in bed most of the day. Andrew and I went into town and then came home a different route, stopping at the FD and at a friend's house. We started up the hill toward out house around 4:00. We rounded a curve right before our house and there were cars and trucks all over. I recognized a couple as first responders and I went into a panic thinking something had happened to DH. (This same thing happened about a year ago but our neighbor, Bill, had broken his leg and they were there for him.) Then I saw the ambulance at our neighbor's house! We pulled up to one of the guys directing traffic and I asked what had happened. He said that they were out on a breathing problem. I thought maybe Bill had come home and we didn't know it. I had Andrew come up to our house but the first responders were all parked in front of our house too so he had to go up the road, turn around and then pull the truck up off the road. Hard to describe - but he had to pull it up onto the hill and then got it stuck in the mud! Anyway, I jumped out and ran over to one of my friends who is a first responder and I asked him if Bill was okay. He looked at me and said, "It wasn't Bill, it was Mary Helen!" OMG! I asked him if she was going to be alright and he said she was already gone when they got there! :sad1: She was only 56!

 OMG! I am so sorry Kathy! How awful. How are you doing? How are the boys doing? any word on her husband?

was your DH there when the first responders got there or was he still at home?

Apparently Mary Helen didn't go to church this morning. Bill is a pastor at the church. One of the people from church called Bill in the hospital after church to check on him. He was worried about him since Mary Helen wasn't in church. So, Bill called home and Mary Helen didn't answer. He called his daughter, who lives a few miles down the road, and told her to go check on her mom. Why he didn't call here I'll never understand. We're so much closer (distance) and we always rely on each other for these things. Anyway, Melanie went to check on her mom and found her in bed. She called 911 and she tried CPR but she knew it was too late.

No, DH has been in bed all day and was not feeling well enough to go over there. He's had a cold and today he's been having chest pains because of his hyaetal (sp?) hernia. He feels terrible that he couldn't go over there. But you have to walk up a pretty steep hill to get to their house and he knew he just couldn't make it up there.

I guess I'm okay. It's just such a shock, especially since she was only 10 years older than me! I was over there from the time I got home with Andrew until about a half an hour ago...except for coming home a few times to check on DH and to get the truck unstuck.

How are the boys doing?

Andrew's okay. A.J. doesn't really know yet. He won't understand all of it until the funeral. But Matthew is really having a hard time. He was very close to her.

any word on her husband?

Bill had been calling their house, with a feeling that something was wrong. He called when the first responders were there and our fire chief picked up the phone. You have to remember what a small community we live in - everyone knows everyone. He identified himself to Bill and told him that Mary Helen was sick but it didn't look good. How do you tell someone over the phone that their wife is gone! Melanie called two other preachers and they came over to the house. By then, Bill had called our house to ask us to go over and see what was going on. Matthew answered the phone and DH told him to tell Bill that we would go check. Poor Matthew didn't want to lie but also didn't want to hurt Bill. Also, a nurse from the hospital called to see if she could find out anything for Bill and the fire chief also answered that call. He told her the truth but told her not to say anything to Bill. When the preachers got to the house they called the hospital, spoke to the nurse to make sure she would be in the room with Bill, and then they called Bill and told him. I just can't imagine how he must have felt.

The preachers headed down to Charlotte but before they got there Bill called Melanie to tell him that when they got down there they would have the choice of brining him home or else he'd take a cab, but he was coming home tonight! He was already dressed and ready to go!

To give you a bit of an idea how close we are with them....Andrew was the ring bearer at Melanie's wedding 11 years ago. And their little boy is 4 and his name....is Andrew!

Wow - Ness didn't sneak on here and I was LTP all night. And, for once, I really don't care. :sad2:

I kept waking up all night wondering if yesterday was a dream - or rather a nightmare - but then I would realize that it was all real! :sad1:
