First Responders are what us "Country Folks" have to respond to emergencies before paramedics. They're first on the scene for anything that you guys would have a paramedic respond to. Down there when you dial 911 they'll just automatically dispatch a paramedic unit. (I remember this from when we lived down there and I'd have to call quite often for my mom.) And the paramedic units were there within minutes. Here we're so far out that they immediately dispatch the local fire department and/or first responders to emergency scenes and then also dispatch the paramedic unit from town. First responders have advanced first aid training to get things started until the paramedic unit arrives from town. But often times it can take 30 minutes for the paramedic unit and ambulance to get to outlying areas of the county but first responders can be on scene within minutes.
