You'll find lots of threads on this subject and lots of opinions too.

But basically, there is a formal night, for which some rent tuxs and a semi formal night. Disney asks that no shorts or jeans be worn at dinner but on Tropical night, people do wear shorts and hawaiian shirts.

If you have a tux or would really enjoy dressing up, go for it. OTH, you can wear a nice suit or dress for both formal and semi formal and wear a sports jacket/tie for Tritons. (Tritons is dressier than the other two resturants.) Nice slacks, polo shirt, sundress, capris, etc. are all good for the other two restaurants. Also, if you decide to eat at Palo's, you'll want to dress up a little.

Take less clothes than you think you'll need. You need dress up clothes for about two hours everynight, unless you want to stay in your nice clothes for the evening. Lots of people bring a couple pairs of pants or skirts and vary the shirts worn with them.

What should I wear to dinner?
The attire in Animator's Palate and Parrot Cay is resort casual -- open-collar shirts and slacks for men and pants and a blouse or a casual dress for ladies. In Lumière's, Triton's, and Palo, we suggest men wear jackets and ladies wear dresses or pantsuits. We kindly request that no shorts, T-shirts or jeans be worn in any of our restaurants in the evening. We also request that swimsuits not be worn in any dining location. However, if you prefer to dine in shorts or comfy jeans, along with your favorite T-shirt, you'll want to try Pluto's Doghouse or Pinocchio's Pizzeria. If you are sailing on the Disney Magic®, you can take advantage of the relaxed dress code at Topsider Buffet. Of course, there's always room service. Or on special occasions, dress up in your colorful island attire, including flowered shirts and muu muus at the themed TROPICALIfragilistic-expialidocious Dinner. During the 7-Night Caribbean Cruise, appropriate attire is also suggested for our elegant and semi-formal evenings when dining with the Master Chef Series and the Captain's Gala Dinner. Tuxedo rentals are available in advance.

Hope this helps.

I noticed on this last cruise a lot of people wearing shorts to dinner (early seating). This was the Western itinerary. I think it's because some people got back from their excursions close to dinnertime(?) The other reason is: one day the bingo jackpot was rather high and they had the last game at 4 pm - many came straight from the game (with long, sad faces ;) ). That was semi-formal night, too. I didn't mind at all; the food was still delicious. Thing is, nobody really seemed to care. We were dressed very nicely, but our table partners were in shorts which made us notice what others were wearing, too. Though, I think we wouldn't have noticed anything had they been dressed up. Am I making any sense
