Last Meal before going into Labor?

I can remember my meals during labour, but not before labour. I remember eating a brownie before leaving for the hospital, thinking I didn’t care about the weight gain. At the hospital, I had a decaf latte and a bran muffin.

With my twins, I had a turkey sandwich and a ginger ale for lunch while in labour.

I had a bag of the TPN formula, went to what was supposed to be a check up and was told that I needed a c-section immediately.

The first real food I got to eat in 34 weeks was carrot cake and it was the best cake ever (atleast it tasted that way at the time).

Don't remember food specifically, but have some other memories. With the first my labor was progressing so slowly that the midwife sent us to the diner down the street to get breakfast. Still was almost 24 hrs after that before she was born.

The 2nd was a Sunday afternoon, and DH insisted in collecting the garbage and putting it on the curb because Monday was our collection day! Unlike the 1st time, son was born just 2 hrs after we arrived.

With youngest child I had a feeling it would happen that day, so called my parents who were 2 hrs away to come watch the older kids. We fed them something for dinner before we left, but I do not remember what. She was born quickly too, thankfully, and we were home the next morning.

I remember both of mine. With my first, DH and I went with both sets of parents to a nearby Chinese restaurant for dinner that we always went to. The owners mother knew I was close to my due date and said "Chinese food make you have baby". Well, the next morning by 9:00, baby was here! My Dad stopped by that day and let the staff know I had had the baby. Also, DH came home from work 5 days after DD was born and said "our parents and I and DD are going to Chinese (the same place), do you want to go?" Well, I wasn't about to let the baby go anywhere without me so I said yes, even though I wasn't really feeling good and hadn't been out anywhere. We went and the whole restaurant staff took care of DD while we ate. I felt so much better after getting out. DD absolutely LOVES Chinese food to this day!!

With DS, we were living with my DIL's at the time and DMIL had made baked spaghetti the night before. During the hospital stay, after feeding DS in the middle of the night, I was hungry, but the only thing I had was 1/2 of a KFC sandwich leftover from earlier that day. I ended up eating cold and it was the best thing ever! I do remember my 2nd night in the hospital with DS, they ran out of any non-diet soft drinks! I had cut out most caffeinated soft drinks while I was pregnant and had been craving them after I gave birth. The only thing the nurses had was diet ginger ale! I was not happy and was calling my family very early the next morning to bring me anything with sugar and caffeine in it!! I even went looking for drink machines during the middle of the night, but couldn't find any nearby.

DD33: I was being induced the following morning (Tuesday). My husband still had to work all day Monday. I ended up baking pork chops. And I actually went into labor that night. I delivered Tuesday afternoon.

DD32: Hers was a planned C-Section. So we went to our favorite pasta buffet the night before.

We were at our weekly check when the doctor told us we had to be back at the hospital in a couple of hours. Our daughter's birth mom wanted Red Lobster so that's exactly where we went!

I don't remember what my wife had. What I do recall was that the cafeteria was closed and all they had were vending machine sandwiches. So I went out and got some lamb biryani at a place that was still open at 10 PM. My wife got some stuff from the hospital food services.

Why didn’t you bring your wife something from the restaurant?

They had full food service for patients 24/7, but couldn't order extra for anyone staying with the patient. A nurse suggested that I go out and find a place that was still open that late. My wife had already gotten her meal delivered by the time I got back.

dd1 38 yrs ago this month - My own loaded lasagna.. noodles, homemade sauce with tomatoes, beef, peppers, mushrooms, onions, garlic, red wine, 3 kinds of cheese... a hearty (heavy) meal for what was about to happen hours later. Thinking back, I shouldn’t have been surprised my water broke that night as I was going to bed.. lol!

dd2 35 yrs ago, also this month... can’t recall at the moment 🙄

Aren't there different opinions on whether or not labor is better on a full or empty stomach? I've heard of some women who would have been better off on an empty stomach.

This was 22 years ago so I'm having a hard time remembering. I had a scheduled c-section after 3 days of them trying to induce me and nothing happening so the night before I know my mom made me a special dinner but who knows what, I can't even remember. I do remember I didn't even feel like eating it when it was time to eat....lol What a waste....

DS21 came 3 weeks early. We had BBQ for dinner. The chicken wasn't done so DH left it on the grill while we ate ribs, baked beans and potato salad. My water broke while we were eating. We came home.a couple days later to charred black chicken breasts still on the grille.

Interesting thread!
I have not and likely will not have children but from what I've learned about labor/delivery I'd choose something that I know usually digests well.
So for me it definitely would not be something like Mexican lol.
I would probably go for something like pizza, mac n cheese, mmmm grilled cheese....
Basically anything with cheese and carbs sounds delish.
Unless you have a scheduled C section, most women don’t get an opportunity to choose their last meals.

No clue really, but I’m guessing empty is better.
Food was the last thing on my mind once my water broke all over the house with both kids. Lol. And I have no idea what I ate. Fun question though. :thumbsup2

The argument is that feeling empty will make mom feel weak. And on a full stomach, things may not stay that way in a hurry.

I know the traditional suggestion is chewing on ice.

I don't remember what we had for dinner... I do remember the nurse encouraging me to eat something before it really got started. So I think I got samosas and... a blueberry muffin (?) from the fridge in the maternity ward. None of that is as important as my first meal after labor -- a cream cheese and lox bagel.

My wife spent about 2 hours trying to clean up the house before we left. I said we should just go and maybe get something to eat. That was some extreme nesting instinct there. Cost 2 hours and possibly the chance for an epidural since it wouldn't take.
