Laser hair removal...does it really work?

Has anyone here tried laser hair removal? Does it really work to remove hair permanently? How badly does it hurt?

Hey, Sandy. I have had it done on my underarms. You have to do it more than once, usually several times, to kill the hair in its growth phases. I have had it done twice now, and I would say I have about half the hair I used to. I figure I will need about 2, MAYBE 3 more treatments. My coworker had her underarms zapped in 4 sessions last year, she hasn't shaved since.

It feels just like a rubber band snapping on your skin over and over again--just a hot sting, if that makes sense. When it gets too intense, I just tell the tech to stop for a second. It's no biggie & I think I have a low pain threshold. Definitely worth it!

Okay, I'll be gauche... how much do your sessions cost? I've seen many websites touting the process, but little on price.

Thanks.

Can they do eyebrows? I have always had heavy eyebrows and I'd LOVE to never have to wax again. I'll shave my legs 'til the cows come home, but my eyebrows are like fuzzy caterpillers when they aren't getting much attention.

I have had it done
It doesn't work on "peach fuzz" just dark hair on lighter skin
I still have some growth even after 4 or so sessions. So be prepared to go back 4-6 times. Most places charge around 100 -125 dollars a session I think. I agree with alliecat about the pain.
I don't know about the eyebrows.

I have heard that they do eyebrows and that they don't--I will ask the technician when I see her next. If it were me, I would not do my eyebrows--it's not worth having a laser that close to my eyes. Plus, the skin on your face would probably be a lot more sensitive than your underarms. Ow.

The first session was $300--it is the most expensive because that is the most hair you will have. After that, it will require fewer pulses because you have less hair, so it costs less. My follow-ups are $75. Not having to shave under your arms ever again...priceless. :)

So unless your hair is dark and your skin is light, then it won't work?

I don't think it has to be light light skin -but I don't think this works on people of African decent. I am not sure about dark olive. It would not work on a caucasian person with light blond hair that they wanted removed. I think most peoples hair that they are removing is darker anyway- that is why they are removing it. :)
There has to be some contrast for the laser to "see" the hairs. It is something about the darker color absorbing the laser I think.

My tech said the ideal scenario is fair skin and dark hair. But my friend who had even better results is half Italian, very olive, with dark hair. Less contrast. Apparently, the coarseness of the hair is a factor, too, (not as much as contrast, of course)--though I haven't figured out if it is better to be coarser or less coarse.
