Las Vegas Questions

Tons of stuff to do on the strip, and you don't even have to spend any money. Geeze, you can probably spend an entire day just walking through the forum shops at Caesars. Tons of shops inside the Venetian.... I walked through NYNY, MGM, Bellagio, Cesar's, Venetian, Luxor... There was a little something to see and do in each hotel. Plenty of places to people watch. Do a little googling of each hotel, and see what's doing these days.
I've been there twice for conventions. Stayed at Mandalay Bay both times. If Border Grille is still in Mandalay Bay, they have the best margaritas! I was there in summer and it was so hot, so I cannot help, you with weather. I wore smart casual and business casual while there.

The Cosmo is next door. Pllllleeeeeaaase go find hidden pizza and grab a slice. (3rd floor, look for tiny hallway covered with records, follow the hall)

I'm assuming casual attire during the day? What's the weather like in November? Shorts? Yoga pants? Capris? Would any of that be acceptable for the sightseeing/wandering into other hotels? If I stop for a drink at a bar by myself is this ok attire?

Weather will be relatively cool by then, probably high temps in the low 70's/high 60's (with cooler nights), so whatever would be comfortable for you in that weather. Long pants and short sleeve T-shirt would probably be comfortable, with some kind of light jacket or sweater for the evening. TBH I hardly ever go outside in Vegas anyway, lol. Dress in Vegas is relatively casual because it's mostly tourists on the strip. Certainly any sightseeing/looking at hotels there will be no dress code. T-shirts/jeans/flip-flops or whatever is fine. Most bars will also be pretty casual, especially during the day, but obviously it really depends on where you are going.

However, if you are going to clubs at night, esp on Friday/Saturday, people really dress to impress though, so you probably don't want to wear your Mickey and Minnie T-shirt if you're hitting the clubs.

Also if you're going to a nice restaurant for dinner, you will probably want to dress up a little bit, but you don't have to go to crazy. I feel perfectly comfortable there in a button up collared shirt and nice jeans (or collared shirt/slacks), so whatever the female equivalent to that is I guess. The last time I was in Vegas, though, we went to a steakhouse for dinner (Delmonico I think) and my buddy was wearing a T-shirt and they wouldn't let him in. One of my other friends had a sport coat, so he just wore that over his T-shirt.

Hi Stacey. :wave2:

Until you get accustomed to the distances between resorts, be careful in attempting to 'let's walk down to that hotel there', several hotels away. It's like they use Disney forced perspective there. Distances don't look like a whole lot between hotels but they are so big the distances look small, but in reality are huge. Even the distance from the front doors of a hotel to the street can be intimidating at times.

At Ceasars, you will pretty much be midpoint on the strip, so a nice location. Make sure to try and take in one or two Cirque shows, they are fabulous, each unique in their own ways.

Lots to do there, enjoy.

Good point, everything in Vegas looks closer than it actually is. The most important things you can pack are multiple pairs of comfortable walking shoes!
One of my favorite places to people watch is at the Venetian-- it's this little "bar" (it's really just a bar counter, but it has stools and a full bar menu) right outside of the food court at the Grand Canal Shops next to Trattoria Reggiano (which is a hidden gem of an Italian restaurant--reasonable prices and amazing food!!). Anyway, I don't know the name of the bar, but they have both regular hour and late night happy hour deals. Bartenders are very friendly and it's a nice place to rest with your shopping bags from the Grand Canal Shops :)
I've found most of the cafes or coffee shops in Vegas hotels are kind of tucked away from the main thoroughfares, so people watching isn't the greatest. But I do like Payard at Caesars--they sell amazing Nutella crepes for a nice snack or sweet breakfast treat.
There are far more bars with great views. I hesitate to recommend Rhumbar at the Mirage any more, as they've recently implemented a no free water/only selling bottled water policy, BUT it does have a lovely outdoor patio with a nice view of the strip and passersby. Virtually all of the resorts have in-lobby bars where you can observe comings and goings, just be prepared to pay $20 a drink!

Just visiting the hotels is fun. They all have different themes.

Tons of shopping.

Hanging out at your hotel pool would be relaxing. Even if it's just sitting in a pool chair soaking up the sun.

The M&M Store is fun, as well as the Coca-Cola store.

I think you'll thoroughly enjoy yourself.

I tagged along with my husband too and spent several days walking by myself up and down (while pregnant) and never felt unsafe. I loved the free gambling lessons at New York New York and Luxor and I'm sure there are others. We aren't club people but love bars and found that many places including some of the nicer places have happy hour specials for food and drink that were perfect for us. The tripadvisor forums are fantastic for detailed advice. We ate one night at Charlie Palmer in the Four Seasons a special with unlimited wine and it was great (on a trip I wasn't pregnant :) )

Omg, you guys are awesome :flower3:

A couple more questions:

I'm assuming casual attire during the day? What's the weather like in November? Shorts? Yoga pants? Capris? Would any of that be acceptable for the sightseeing/wandering into other hotels? If I stop for a drink at a bar by myself is this ok attire?

I like to shop so all the shopping areas are a plus even if I'm just looking.

The Mob Museum sounds fun and I think I will do as klacey1 says...walk down the street till I want to stop but I also want to have "options".

I love to people watch so are there places (coffee shops maybe) where I can grab a drink and stay awhile?

I'll have to ask what room category we have but it gives us access (?) to the one pool area :confused3

Once again, thank you all so much!!

Do you want to go some place really old school Vegas, retro, and cool?

Go to the Peppermill Fireside Lounge.

It's north of the Wynne, next to where the Rivera used to be and a little far to walk from Caesars, but it's well worth checking out.

Here's the website: http://www.peppermilllasvegas.com/
And here's a couple of pics:

It doesn't look like much from the outside, and you have to go through a coffee shop to get to the lounge, but it is beyond awesome.

Trust me; I know these things.

;)

Oh, thank you. I'd love to check this out.

Hi Dan - nice to "see you" my friend :flower3:

I live in Vegas. Let me know if you have any specific questions. I'm happy to direct you.

In the evening, ideally at sunset if possible, I recommend Skyfall lounge in the Delano for a fabulous view.

On the Trip Advisor forum you will regularly find posted the most recent happy hour listing. It will feel very overwhelming if you've never visited before, however it is much simpler with just a small familiarity. There is also an app you can put on your phone that will give a simplified indoor map of the hotels and casinos. It's perfect for cutting through the property to catch a tram or to locate a specific restaurant or lounge easily, especially the smaller ones which are sometimes easy to overlook. It's not on my phone right now, but I'll check and see if my husband left it on his phone. It was a real lifesaver.

Off this Saturday for our trip. A little bummed the temperature seems to be quite cool but we got tickets to a Cirque show and the Reba/Brooks & Dunn show.

Thanks for all your suggestions :-)

Around this time of the year the Ethel M Chocolate Factory lights up their cactus garden for the holidays. I've never seen it myself, but it sounds like an interesting and unique display.

Hope you have a wonderful trip. I had heard they have some chilly weather right now, but I'm sure there will be plenty of fun to be had nonetheless.

My fiancé and I are going to Vegas the week after Thanksgiving. He has a conference and I'm tagging along. This is my first time to Vegas. Here's the stupid question...he will have to be at the conference a couple hours a day - is there "enough" for me to do by myself? Is it safe for me to be alone and sightsee?
Thoughts....
  • safety is relative.... are you from an urban or rural center? Some people are just creeped out by large crowds.
  • when hubby is gone for those few hours each day.... just go exploring one hotel section of the strip each day.
  • the South strip (Wynn to Mandalay Bay) is very congested with tourists and I feel safe in the crowds exploring.
  • North of Wynn will be difficult for some to see.... but going to watch the Fremont lights at night is a treat.
  • There's the Deuce bus that can get you around the strip if you get tired of walking.
  • if you are left on your own for the whole day.... go on a tour of the Grand Canyon. Do the West Rim one day and South Rim the next.

  • Red Rock Canyon and the Hoover Dam are worth a visit too.
  • I like the cooler fall and spring temperatures
  • watch out for taxi's at the airport. They are famous for welcoming visitors to Vegas by long hauling customers on the freeway to get to nearby strip hotels. There will be no tip from me.... especially that 40% tip button on the credit card machine.

DS and I found something cool at the MGM, tucked away on the same level as the food court. It's a place where you watch and rate new TV shows. You enter your demographic info into a computer (no names or address; just age, city/state, etc.), then you sit and watch an episode of a show that is still in development. While watching, you keep turning a dial up or down based on your reaction to each moment of the show. Afterward you fill out a detailed questionnaire on a computer. It was a really cool experience and they gave us coupons for free ice cream and a few other discounts. DS hated the show we watched. I didn't like it much, but it was fun to give my opinion!
