We are driving through parts of the Southwest and deciced to stop in at Las Vegas. We are only staying one night.

Basically to see the Hoover Dam, and I want to see the Strip at night with all of the lights. We don't need to gamble, have 2 teens and are not going to any showes. We just are stopping by.

Any hotel recommendations? Looking for cheaper hotel, not needing a big name place, but don't want it to be in a bad part of town. Walking distance to the Strip would be best.

Is there a section of town to avoid? Looking at expdia, it has hotels listed East of the STrip, West of the Strip, etc. Not sure what I need to avoid.

Any free things to do there?

thanks!

with teens - New York, New York would be fun!
Its a middle priced choice (generally) is not at the bottom of the strip, nicely located actually for wandering and viewing the hotels which are amazing.
The N. end of the strip near Circus Circus and up towards Fremont Street are the seedier parts - or at least they were when I was there last (its been a few years)

We stayed in the Luxor last year for basically the same reasons. Got a good price and it was fine. It is at the end of the strip so we walked that end the first night and then drove to Bellagio and parked there free and walked that park of the strip the second night.

I am a frequent visitor to Las Vegas.

Inexpensive middle of the strip hotels are: Imperial Palace, Bill's and Excalibur.

Flamingo, Bally's and Harrah's can be reasonable sometimes too.

A little pricer hotel is Mandalay Bay but they have a pool beach with a wave pool.

Monte Carlo is a bit less expensive and they have a wave pool as well.

Freemont St downtown is not seedy but its all gambling - no activities for those under 21 - so I would probably skip that.

New York has a roller coaster ride.
MGM has a lion habitat
Mirage has a small zoo/aquarium
Venetian has Madame Tusauds wax museum

make sure you try In-n-Out burger!

Have fun.

I'm not sure when you are going but if you go to the hotels' websites and sign up for internet offers, you can get some really good rates. I travel frequently to Las Vegas and last summer the lowest I got was $15 for New York New York and $25 for Mandalay Bay.

New York New York would be fun for your teenagers but the rooms are really small compared to the other hotels. Mandalay definitely has the best pool.

I'm in my 50s and I can walk the Strip from one end to the other so location for sightseeing isn't ever a big concern for me. If you want to be closer to the middle, I agree with the PP, check out the Flamingo.

A few months ago someone asked about hotels for kids...I realize yours are teens and not little ones, but even with teens there are the same rules about them not being allowed on the casino floor and stuff, so I thought I'd recommend the hotel we stayed at. It was the Residence Inn Hughes Center and about a mile off the strip. All the major hotels on the strip offer free parking, so driving in and parking on the strip really isn't too big a deal.

Here's a link to my post about it

As a Nevadan let me just add, we encourage you to gamble. We need the bucks :lmao:

Across from the airport is an awesome La Quinta. It's on Surrey. We stayed there in April and it was so nice!!! We didn't hear any noise from the airport and our window faced it. Has a breakfast, beds are super comfy. I can't say enough nice things about it. Only downside, it is not too close to the Strip. Pets are allowed, but only on the first floor.

Lots of free stuff! The fountains at the Bellagio (they give me chills!! Love them!!!) the sirens of treasure island show (I would say this borders on soft porn so check a YouTube video before taking the family!) the volanco at The mirage, the freemont street experience, there a thing inside the forume shops at Ceasar that tells the story of Atlantis.
