Las Vegas help need .

On our last trip to Vegas we decided to rent a car. So glad we did as Red Rock Canyon is amazing. We also drove to Oatman one morning and we all loved it. Horseshoe Bend is a little far but worth every minute as the view is unbelievable.... Our girls actually loved it more than the Grand Canyon. Have a great time.

Fountains at Bellagio outside-but be sure to check out conservatory too-changes seasonally. And look up to see the glass flowers in the lobby. Shopping in Caesars palace is fun. The thrill rides on top of Statosphere (not for faint of heart though-the only time I have ever seen my thrill seeker husband with shaky knees). Zip lining down Fremont street is sooo fun-we want to the the Rio one next time. High Roller with bar car (if you like alcohol). Dinner at Paris (awesome views at night). People watching on strip at night. Circque de soleil shows. Gambling at the smaller casinos during day (we loved craps tables at the Excalibur). Just exploring the hotels on the strip are an adventure in themselves.

I was in LV for a week in Oct 2015. I wasn't all that interested in gambling so planned a bunch of day trips. As others have mentioned, I would highly recommend Red Rock Canyon - it's close to LV and many hotels offer shuttles / day trips out. It was a half day for us because we did a bit of hiking so we rented a car.

Red Rock Canyon:

We also did an overnight to the Grand Canyon. Rented a car and left LV at 10 AM, stopped on the way to see the Hoover Dam (didn't do an official tour) and walked over the bridge and also stopped in Seligman, Arizona. This place was AMAZING!! If you're a Cars fan, they have revamped this little town into a real-life Radiator Springs. It's on old Rte 66 and was such a gem. There's a great ice cream shop there. I think this is where we stopped for lunch and a snack on our way to the Grand Canyon. It's a must see for sure. We got to the Grand Canyon in time for sunset so we did that in the park, went to our hotel and got dinner then was up at 4:30 to get back to do the Sunrise which was fantastic. Then we toured around the rest of the park before heading back to Vegas around lunch time. We got back by late afternoon. Word of warning that hotel prices are high in Grand Canyon so plan ahead because there's not much availability.

The other thing we did which i LOVED - experience of a lifetime for me - was a kayak trip down the Colorado River from the base of the Hoover Dam. I think our total paddle was 13 miles but we stopped alot and did some small hikes, took a dip in some of the hot springs, went for a swim. It was FANTASTIC. Best money I ever spent (i think around $120). It included lunch, snacks, water, all the gear and transportation from any number of hotels in Vegas to the put in point and they dropped us back. We were picked up around 6 or 7 AM and returned around 6 PM. And this is a BEGINNER level trip. It's smooth water. We lucked out with a tail wind but the pace was easy and the guide was an expert paddler and outdoorsman.

Our put-in point on the kayak tour:

The kayak trip is right up my daughter's alley and we will be going at the end of the summer. Where did you book this? Thanks!

This is the link for the company we booked through. I'd highly recommend them. http://www.kayaklasvegas.com/kayak_one_day/

I got the price wrong - it's $199 + $22 park permit. But still worth it. I would have paid more given how great the experience was.

Thank you, I really appreciate the information and the link!
My pleasure! I hope it works out for you. I would suggest not doing the tandem kayak. It would have been easier in a single. We chose a tandem because my friend had no experience and she was more comfortable if we were together but the boat is harder to control and heavier.

Fav things on my visit....
  • there are two parts to the Grand Canyon. West Rim and South Rim. If you have time... do both to see the difference
  • make time for a meal at the Bacchanal Buffet (expect long lines)
  • explore the strip walking into all the casino's
  • watch the Bellagio water show
  • check out the lights of Fremont in the evening
  • Red Rock is convenient... however consider an SUV to explore the canyon's rough roads.

We stay at the Desert Rose Resort which is right behind the Tropicana and Hooters. Very nice place.

You can check out these sites for discounts for things to do in town

Groupon.com

There is so much that has come up that is new. The Bellagio has a big chocolate fountain with a bakery. It is good for a snack. And take a picture of the fountain. Some of the hotels are starting to charge for parking. There is so much shopping , it can be overwhelming. If you like Earl Of Sandwich there is one in the Planet Hollywood. I can't wait to get back for a visit.

Thanks for the suggestions. The kayak tour looks fun. We will be there mid June. Will the heat be unbearable?

Hi there. I go every year to LV and LOVE it. Depending on your plans, I do NOT recommend renting a car - because you can easily get around along the strip and downtown via the Bus or Uber and with all the alcohol around there- well, I don't like to have to think twice before getting a refill before driving.

As for the Grand Canyon - I highly recommend Comedy on Deck Tours and their bus tour - I have done it TWICE now and thoroughly enjoyed both times. They frequently have a Groupon where it is maybe $90 per person and that includes 2 meals - breakfast and lunch. I thought the bus trip would be ENDLESS but it really was fine - and the tour guide always had some good info to share that you would miss driving it yourself. They have 3- 4 pickup locations on the strip - so there would be one near you, maybe not right at your hotel, but walkable. You do have to show up early - I think we had to be at ours by 6:30am. Bring a small soft-sided cooler with you with some water and snacks for the bus - you can leave it right on the bus while you're touring.

Other things I love: Outdoor bar at Harrahs (good bands on some weekend nights), I LOVED the Rock Of Ages show (but this might depend on your age...It is 80's rock), Bellagio Fountains (I see them every night), Piano bar at Paris (get there early and you can get a nice table), Nine Fine Irishmen bar at NYNY (too small though and often end up standing but I love the band so usually go and at least enjoy a beer or two while listening).

Almost forgot one of my favorites - BINGO at Gold Coast - there is a free shuttle near the Big Wheel to bring you over there. Fun way to gamble especially if you're not a huge gambler...They will show/tell you how to play - it's all electronic- the computer tells you when you win. You can go spend about $20 and then enjoy 'free' drinks for 45 minutes while they go through the series of games.

Yes - the heat will be unbearable. You want to plan to be either INDOORS or INSIDE during most of the day...If you want to 'walk the strip' get up EARLY to do it or plan to do it after it gets dark.

If you are going in June I would suggest you rent a car for afternoon trips when it is too hot to walk around, I would drive to Red Rocks, Hoover Dam (Lake Mead National Recreation Area), and Mount Charleston (read up) where the temperatures will be cooler.

I like the fountains at the Wynn, my favorite show was KA which is a 150 million dollar production, amazing theater.

I lived in Vegas for 5 years and go back every year to visit friends and you have many choices. First thing are you getting a rental car? If yes, then stay at the M over the Tropicana. Since you will already have been a Ceasars, going to the Trop will seem like a motel 6. However the M which is beautiful is way off the strip. If you rent a car be aware that many casinos now make you pay for parking and valet at most are not free either, even when you are staying at the hotel, unless you have a Total Rewards card at the Platinum, Diamond and Seven Stars levels. https://www.caesars.com/parking

Las Vegas really has everything, just depends upon what you like. If it is hiking head over to red rock canyon. https://www.blm.gov/nv/st/en/fo/lvfo/blm_programs/blm_special_areas/red_rock_nca.html
or the Valley of Fire http://parks.nv.gov/parks/valley-of-fire

The Mob Museum is really cool and has a bar at every level. http://themobmuseum.org/

A pp mentioned the Atomic museum, which is really cool, but if you are a US citizen and you have to book in advance as they do a security screening you can actually take a tour of the test sight in the Yucca Flats. http://chemistry.about.com/od/nuclearchemistry/a/How-To-Visit-The-Nevada-Test-Site.htm

I would skip Pawn Stars, unless you are really into the show and want to possibly meet one of the "stars". Otherwise it is just a pawn shop and a mediocre one at that. They did buy the space next to them and put up a container strip mall. But by far the best container mall is downtown at: http://downtowncontainerpark.com/ Not only does it have cool shops and a great vibe, they often have bands playing on their stage and some great food places.

a pp mentioned serendipity, but it has closed!!!! But if you walk across the street and down to the High Roller in between the LINQ and Flamingo, there is a Sprinkles cupcake and even better in my opinion a Ghirardelli Chocolate store.

Or if you want the best milkshakes ever, and they also have alcoholic ones as well go to LVB in the Mirage. Disclaimer they were named BLT and got closed by the health department last year, but have now reopened to a A rating by the health department. I just went for a milkshake and did not try the food, but they have an open kitchen and we sat at the bar looking at the cooks and it seems they have cleaned up their act.

A must do is to go see a Cirque show, all of them are AMAZING, my favorite used to be Ka, but is now Michael Jackson's One. Just a note: Zumanity is a heavy R rating, no kiddos and no adults who are squeamish about human sexuality in all of its glory. It celebrates love of all by all, with a mock orgy scene. It is all tastefully done and very artsy, but it is not for everyone.

All of the headliner performers are wonderful....Just saw Britney Spears last month and she really put on a great show, even though I am not a huge fan, I still knew at least half of the songs she played.

Too hot on the strip want to take a drive somewhere cooler, head to Mt. Charleston. http://www.gomtcharleston.com/ about 45 minutes from the strip.

Have fun!!!!

I've gone twice, both times in July. Walking outside feels like opening an oven door. It's really hot. But virtually no humidity. When we went to Hoover dam the sweat started rolling down our backs! Spend the early afternoon at the pool. We went to red rock canyon during the day but in a limo. He stopped at scenic spots for us to get out briefly. Just wear very light clothes. As far as kayaking in that heat, I'm not sure I could do it.

If you like Thai food, definitely check out Lotus of Siam. It's in a really ghetto shopping center near the stratosphere, but has the best Thai food in Vegas and rated #1 in the country. People wait in line before it opens to get in.

Walking the strip is an adventure in itself. You will see lots of" interesting" people there. Lots of museums. Fremont street, Red Rock Canyon, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and Death Valley are all within a reasonable distance. Of course, what you see and do is up to your personal taste. Family trip? You might want to censor some of the venues from younger children. Have been there 4 times, and vowed never to take my younger children.

I've been to Vegas twice in the past four years. We stayed off the Strip at my uncle's condo with a rental car, but we visited the Strip often. Here are some things I highly recommend:

  • Le Reve at the Wynn Hotel. It seriously is the most beautiful show and worth every penny. My DH was extremely skeptical but came out of the show raving about it. If you are willing to wait until you arrive in Vegas to buy tickets, go to one of the cheap ticket places just outside Fashion Show Mall. There are NO bad seats at the show - the seating surrounds the pool. I also wanted to mention that I also saw Rock of Ages and found it extremely tacky. Unless you are a huge fan of 80s rock, skip it. There are often Broadway tours, so if that's your thing, check out what shows might be stopping by in advance.
  • Fremont Street was really fun, but don't go with kids. It is AMAZING for people-watching because there are some really bizarre people there, but please, don't take kids. There were just too many things/people there that I would NOT want to explain to a kid! I did NOT find the light show impressive, but it was fun to hear all of the live music.
  • Great eats: Nacho Daddy, Bacchanal Buffet at Caesar's (the BEST buffet!), El Segundo Sol, Grimaldi's (I know they're a chain but we don't have it by us, and the pizza was phenomenal!), In N Out Burger (again, if you don't have one by you, you've got to try it!)
  • I love shopping and had a great time at the outlet mall, Fashion Show Mall, and the shops at Caesar's.
  • Make sure to visit the Bellagio! View the fountain show and go into the hotel to see the glass flowers in the lobby and the seasonal garden display. Excellent place for photos!
  • A non-recommendation: Coke World and the MnM Store are tourist traps. I would never go back!
