Whats the largest carry on size luggage you have used? Every airline seems to have their own sizing allowance and now with less free checked allowance will you try to push it?

Most airlines restrict you to 45 linear inches. The standard carry-on bag is 22" x 14" x 9". You are also allowed one briefcase/purse/small back pack in addition to the carry-on. Carry-on's are not restricted by weight but you need to be able to lift them into the overhead compartment.

Actually, carry-on baggage can have weight limits (the last four airlines that I've flown):

AC - both 'standard' and 'personal' article are limited to 10kg (22lb).

BA - 15kg (23lb) maximum

Lufthansa - 8kg

Air France - total (both bags) 12-18kg depending on what class you are flying.

I am not sure if any US carrier has weight limits.

Yes - international carriers do restrict carry-ons by weight. I did not see the OP was in Ontario.

If you could move it you could roll a 200lb. carry-on bag on a domestic airline, no questions asked. They never even look at them.

To answer your last question, no. I carry my notebook in a side bag, that's it. It fits under a seat and all the rest of the luggage gets checked.

Since I'm Canadian and tend to fly AC, I just assumed that US carriers would have limits like we do (the AC limits includes flights to/from the US).

Since I'm pretty sure I couldn't roll/lift a 200lb bag, I think I'll stick to my small carry-on bags;)

I would check with your airline. The past 2 trips we've taken we have only used carry-ons. I do laundry when the kids go to the pool. I wouldn't push it now especially since they are charging for checked bags they just may find a reason for you not to carry it on!!! I do know since we booked our trip before a certain date we wouldn't have to pay for our checked luggage.

Another option is to go www.eBag.com and go the carry on bag area. There is a pull down menu to select which carryon bags that eBags have will be allowed for that particular airline. From the bag specifications you will have a good idea to what size you need.

Is there a size limit on the personal item (other than it must be smaller than the designated carry on). I ask because, even though my old carry on supposedly should meet the size limits, last May at MCO they had one of those carry on measuring thingies sitting right where the guy scans your boarding pass before you get on the plane. They didn't have anyone use it, but no way my carry on would have fit in that little thing. My carry on did go in the overhead bin wheels first though, like it's supposed to. Anyway, with all the restrictions I decided I was not taking any chances, so bought me a new carryon the other day that is significantly smaller than my old one. I know it will fit in that little metal thingy with no problems. However, to compensate, I bought a larger tote bag/purse than I usually use to use as a personal item that matches it. It's about 19"x12"x8" and is a soft flexible leather type material. It's 19" at the widest point but then gradually gets smaller at the bottom. Will it be allowed as a personal item?

IMO it's pretty much if it will fit under the seat in front of you for the size of the personal item.

The "wheels first" idea makes little sense. Most bags fit better if put in "wheels last" due to the curvature of the fuselage shaping the overhead bins.

In any event I have seen where passengers had to check most of their carry-on bags when all the overheads were full. I now carry a bag that fits under the seat of almost any plane.

I think the "wheels first" is just meant to say it has to fit in the overhead compartment short side not long. But I know for my luggage there is minimal if any difference between either short side in terms of size because of how the wheels are tucked.

No, things were packed in the overheads before they started to charge for checked bags. I only imagine they are getting worse!

Its irritating when people were taking more space than alloted by the airlines, now I am reading on different sites about airline staff enforcing the rules they had. (I understand if the airlines didnt enforce the rule its not the persons total fault but I am sick of being mashed by carry-ons getting on and off the plane!) I am a meanie who would restrict people to a backpack that crams under the seat.

I hear you! I also have heard that people are getting quite aggressive when it comes to carry-ons. Passengers are fighting over the overhead space...No one wants to pay extra for checked luggage-so people are just trying to get out of the checked bags maybe....

I am a firm believer that if you have a carry-on it should be required to fit under the seat in front of you (if there is one). If it wouldn't fit then it should be required to be checked. It doesn't mean it has to be stored there, but the size limit should be based on it.

Thanks for your responses. Even though we are from Ontario we never fly on the Canadian side, more than happy to cross the border and fly domestic inside the US.

We are travelling Air Tran on the way down and it says 55 combined inches for carry on, just trying to figure out how big that could be. My carry on is 19" but maybe I could do a bigger duffle of some sort.

Also in March we usually fly Jetblue and they state 26" WOW, don't know if I could lift that one over my head!!!!

What I've seen lately is the "gate rush". I've seen men in nice business suits pushing people out of the way to get on first so that they can put their carryon and briefcase/laptop in the overhead above their seat. Along the same lines, there will be people in zone 7 standing right up at the door area when zone 1 is called, they want to be sure when zone 7 is called they are first. Meanwhile everyone has to get around them. Even when they make the announcement not to approach the gate until your zone is called, people will still do it.

As a frequent business traveller I'll echo everyone's complaints about carry-on bags. When I travel on business my carry-on 22" x 14" x 9" suiter goes wheels first into the overhead bin and my large wheeled laptop bag always goes under my seat. I usually book window seats cause I like the view and I like being able to access my laptop without getting up. I'm 6' tall and have never had an issue with my briefcase cramping my feet.

I get so frustrated by flyers cramming oversized bags lengthwise in overhead bins along with their briefcases. I would love to see airlines enforcing carry-on limits. They should charge $50 per bag to gate check oversize carry-ons. Maybe that will stop these inconsiderate people.

It would be really nice if people started having a little consideration for others. Whatever happened to the Golden Rule? :confused3
