Larger villas at the 7m mark

Hi all!! I’ve been researching for years now and hoping to take the plunge within the next year. Yay! My question is- we are a family of 5, so we have more limited options, as far as studios go, so we would be looking at maybe every other trip or so, getting 1-2bedroom villas. Depending on how many points we end up choosing. (I’m planning to have enough to do 2 full weeks plus 1 long weekend each year, during the times we want to travel.)

*lots of words to simply ask-at that 7 month mark, is the availability for the larger villas generally better than studios? In my
Mind, “better” would qualify as 2-3 other options.
My kids are currently 14,10 and almost 8. So it would be nice to have more room. And nice to have a couple options to choose from for those larger villas. I’ll probably spread the points over 2-3 contracts with the same use year as well. That way once kids are grown, I can unload some if we decide we need to. But probably wouldn’t, as id still want them to travel with us when they can. May or may not be same home resort. Thoughts or suggestions??

Make sure you buy a popular UY. We bought October and it was hard to match up an add on since October and September are less available. We found one but the choices were definitely more limited.

Time of year travels too, 2 weeks is a long time and from mid Sept to mid January things are booked up, even at 11 months... changing out then will not be an easy thing, especially for that long.

One option to increase your choices is to buy two home resorts so you can book each one every other year using banking and borrowing,

Or, plan a split stay which can be nice.

yeah my 2 weeks would not beconsecutive, it would 2 separate full weeks. Just to clarify!

All the points come available but I can only book 100pts at each, correct? I can’t combine them yet? (Assuming I’m starting from zero and there’s nothing banked from previous).

Correct. You can only combine points from different resorts at 7 months.

With kids of that age, I'd plan enough points for a 2 bedroom every time. A 1 bedroom would be super tight.

Know that over the course of your contract, availability could change fairly significantly. One bedrooms have been the last to go, but they do seem to be getting harder to get at a few resorts during peak seasons, which over time could mean more resorts for longer periods of time. Past availability trends change future member behavior - they plan and allocate points to be able to get that one bedroom. On the other hand, I wouldn't worry too much about sleeping five for long - by the time you get points, and are able to book a reservation, you will only have a few trips with the currently 14 year old and they will likely have obligations (work, college, significant other, whatever) that make planning for two weeks worth of vacation difficult.

This is absolutely true, but if it's the best UY for your travel (basically anybody who does NOT travel to Florida in the summer) then I'd prioritize the one that works best over the one that's easier to match.

I am confused. I was able to book 5 into a BCV 1BR last year. Maybe it doesn't provide bedding for the 5th guest like BWV?

No need for apology. The whole how many people fit into a studio/1BR at different resorts can get really confusing!

SSR is definitely 5 in a 1 bedroom, but 4 in a studio. The non renovated have sleeping surfaces for 4, so you would have to provide a bed and linens. The renovated rooms have the small trundle bed under the TV to sleep the 5th person. BCV, BWV and BRV in one bedrooms sleep 5, but only have sleeping surfaces for 4, linens and bedding the renter has to provide. DVC will probably put in the small trundle bed in these resorts when they get a hard good refurbishment.

CCV due to the small rooms are 4 in a studio and 1 bedroom, just like AK value studios and 1 bedrooms are small and both allow only 4.

That's interesting. I never knew cash reservations are treated differently. I guess that's another reason to buy DVC!
