laptop to bring or not?

is it worth it to bring the laptop? Is it easy to get connect to the net? iwas thinking of downloading aol , since my sympatico doesnt have US connect numbers?

I won't let dh bring the laptop...... I figure it's a vacation and if he had his laptop he would feel inclined to check his work email..... at least if he can't check it then no one can get in touch with him to ask him anything!!lol

plus I can't see us having any time for it!! just one more thing to lug!!

I'll be bringing my laptop in January. I doubt I'll be able to check email, but it will be great to clear off the digital cam picture cards each day and burn the images to a CD.

i also brought my laptop last trip and used it mostly to store all my digital pics - small memory card.

We brought ours one trip and it never made it's way out of the bag so I would say just leave it at home just one more thing to worry about really.

I always bring mine becasue I have to check my email while I'm gone (self-employed so have no choice) but I also use it to upload my digital pics each day. I never spend enough time in our room to really use it much but it's definitely worth it to me for those two reasons.

Just keep in mind that each local call at WDW is .75 so it can add up if you log on a lot. If you're at a resort that has High Speed, it's $9.95/day (but convenient & easy to use).

Like others, we use ours for downloading digital pics at the end of the day. We also check email and send off some "wish you were here" pictures to our friends. The third thing we use it for is to check our flight arrangements before we head home.

We like to set up a slide show with all our vacation pictures to run while we are relaxing in the room.

Hi Susan:

Just a quick question, to plug in a laptop to read email or send email in one of the resort rooms you have to pay for it, it is not included in your room rate.

We have always said it would be nice to have a laptop to send email messages to family or check emails for my son he has a home business but thought it was just an extra perk that they threw in. Fill me in on this new technology, lol.

They now offer highspeed in some resorts but you do have to pay for it. I have found it cheaper to use an internet kiosk near the pay phones for sending quick e mails. IF you use dialup you get hit with a .75 cent charge everytime you dial into the provider you are using as is the case with any call made from your room you will also want to be sure the number you get is not long distance it will really add up. None of those things are free from the hotels and they do charge for it the highspeed is 9.95 for the day I have also heard that is was 12.95 for the day so I am not sure what the true cost is but that seems expensive to me for sending e mail.

We are DVC members and stay at OKW when we are at Disney. Because of this, we get free 1-800 calls from the room. Our internet provider (Telus) has a US roaming number that is a 1-800, for about $1/hour. At this rate it is economical enough for us to log in and send some emails and surf the web.

Now OKW also has high speed for about $10/day, which we might use one day for sending pictures, as it would be much faster than the dialup.

I always tell my DBF not to bring his. I'm worried that he'll be tempted to work ... or worse play a game with someone at home I bring a couple of extra big memory cards, that way I won't have to worry about downloading my pictures. Plus, if I run out of room, we always have a film camera that we take with us as well

Ya we just bring large CF cards for the camera then we don't have to worry about it till we get home. Plus I am not about to pay 10 bucks for a day of highspeed when I would use it for all of about 10 minutes. We are DVC members and it is now available in all the resorts and tehy are also supposed to be working on a wireless connection for it.

I take mine with me so I can Dis from WDW ,We also have sympatico. Dh used the AOL dial up and just paid the .75 cent each time. The only problem was that almost every time we had to use it, it dropped the line so it cost 1.50 but that was ok because we had stuff that HAD to be dealt with while at WDW.

Last time,dh wasn't with me and I had a hard time connecting up to AOL - so I didn't do much in the way of computer stuff last trip.

I have to admit, the computer is my main hobby and if you have a digital camera, it could prove useful to bring your laptop. However, why would you bring it while on vacation otherwise? It's a vacation. Getting away from that stuff is part of the point.

When we were at CSR the HS service was $9.95. When travelling I usually use a service that my internet provider offers called "iPass Connect". It provides me with a local number from wherever I am and my IP bills me in CAD funds at a set amount (Orlando is ~$3.75/hr). Of course I still get dinged the .75 from Disney for each call as well. I used the HS at CSR for one day but it wasn't worth it as I really wasn't on-line (in my room) enough to use it.

I never take mine but for some reason I did this time...it worked out very well as we're locked in our resort until Frances blows away....so I say, bring it!

guess i am gonna wait till i am done packing the car, and if there is room, laptop is coming.. might mean leaving 1 or 2 pairs of shoes home. YIKES

I would leave the lap top hjome and take the shoes. I usually take 4 pairs of shoes or more just in case you never know LOL.
