Laptop Recommendations, Please

Thanks for your responses. I know there is no way the laptop will make it through med school. This will be our first laptop, and if I end up having to get her something different in the fall then that's okay. Either way, we will have to have two laptops by August. I think for our first venture into the laptop field, we will go with a Toshiba Satellite. Eventually, a Mac is going to find its way into our house but not right now.

Hi,
I've worked for Apple in the past, and now I work for a company that sells and repairs Dell, HP and Apple.
The discussion can get really heated, but in the end it depends on what you want to do with it, what your personal preferences are, and how much money you want to spend. Whatever you choose - always, ALWAYS get the extended warranty. Get one that covers the laptop screen, as that is the most fragile piece and very expensive to replace. If you have that, you'll be covered whatever problems you might run into down the road.
For colleges, you can call them and ask them what laptops the IT group will support and help the students with in troubleshooting and setup.
Good luck!
