Hello Disney experts!

My family is planning a trip to DL in Oct. We have twins who will be 3yrs old when we go. My son has cerebral palsy and lacks the ability to sit up very well on his own.

My question is, are you allowed to have your kids on your lap for rides? I know its not feasable for all of them, but I'm hoping for some!

Thanks for the input!

Jennine,
May I suggest you call Disneyland and let them know when you will be going to the park, and ask them what rides you would be able to hold your son? The CM might be able to help you plan a great visit to the park.:)

Totally agree with the above post, there are rides you can and also those you cant best advise is to call Disney!

Not anything with height requirement except Bobsleds and rides with lap belts.
I know you can do train lap sitting and the monorail.
It is a ride by ride choice of the CMs and safety people.
Check with City Hall and explain his needs but even City Hall may not have the right answer. It is the ride operator and greeters who make the final decision.

thanks for the info! I will definitely give a call and see what I can find out!

I would also say that a lot of the Fantasyland rides maybe you could sit side-by-side with your arm around him holding him against your side. I did this with my children when they were < 1yr and not allowed to lap sit (This was at a different park). Would this be a possibilty with your ds? I wish you the best with your trip!

I would check the Disabilities forum and ask that question...they are generally for WDW, but whenever someone asks things like that here they are directed there...so be specific that you're asking about DLR.

Yes, I agree with Bumbershoot that you should also ask the question over on the disabilities forum. That forum is generally about WDW but I asked several questions over there about DLR and got some really good suggestions.

the WDW disAblities board cannot help in this matter.

The question is whether a parent can have a child lap sit. It does not matter if the child is disabled or not. Rules are rules and thus this is a matter with the ride operators, their management and park policies. The parent can do things like hold onto the child for example or put a harness on the child so as to better support and hold the child.

I have seen babies and toddlers on laps but as to how big a child they allow depends on ride policy and the CM at the ride. Just because I saw a 5 year old lap sitting on Dumbo does not mean that tomorrow a CM will say no to a parent with a 6 month old baby for example.

WDW disAbilities can help the parent with tips on how to have a better vacation, travelling with a low tone person, how to help a low tone person enjoy rides best, and other tips for persons with low tone issues in any park. A mom who goes to WDW will deal with the same issues as a mom at DLR but they do not always have the same rules on both coast. Very helpful people over there at disAbilities.:cloud9:

I think the disabilities forum can help with this matter because I'm sure there are some over there who have a similar issue who can give suggestions on what they did in this same situation. Yes, it is up to the CM on each ride to say what is allowed but people who have had to deal with a similar issue can shed some light on what it was like for them and maybe offer some tips on how they made it work for them. Yes, the rules at WDW are not always the same as DLR but I got responses from several people who had been to DLR also and even the ones who only know WDW can offer suggestions on what they did, what it was like, etc. Not trying to start an argument here, just want to make sure OP uses all the resources available and not to dismiss the disability forum just because its focus is mostly WDW.

Thanks for the info everyone. I will check out the other board and also give the DL line a call for info.

If we were to have him sit close enough beside us we could hold him up. With his therapy, he's been gaining balance and strength by the day so hopefully it won't be a huge issue come October!

My comments on the WDW disAbilities board is because I spend a lot of time there until someone followed me from another site and made me feel stupid, low and not worthy of being there. Yes there are mean people out there.

I have spent a lot of time on disAbiilities and am the bloodhound over there also.

Sorry to hear about the meanie on the other board. :sad1: Hopefully that person has found something better to do than harrass you on a message board.

I believe that you can have your child on your lap on most rides as long as you both can fit under the lap bar / belt. Obviously, there are rides where this just doesn't work, like Matterhorn (fast, turning, jerking, etc...), but City Hall could probably give you a detailed list.

I agree with asking on the other board, as others may know the answer.

...It is a ride by ride choice of the CMs and safety people.

The cast members have no say in this at all. They enforce the policy for that ride, but they have no choice.

My girls are a month shy of 3 and I've done IASW, Buzz, half of POTC and the Chew Chew Train (in DCA) with one on my lap. At the Chew Chew I was told that I had to put her on my lap (I was riding in the car with two of my girls) and the others were when one fo the girls climbed into my lap mid-ride.

We just did Alice and Monsters Inc. with a little one on my lap earlier this week.
