SO I just read a facebook status of a friend who is in the world as I type and
she said that it looks as though Splash Mountain logs may have lap bars. Is this true or is she just seeing things? Also I thought it was closed so I am not sure how she saw that unless it has either reopened or they are just running the ride without anyone in them.

Did she refer to it as Splash Mountain, or simply SM? Splash mountain is indeed closed today, the logs do not have lap bars, and I have a feeling she was referring to Space Mountain...

She said Splash Mountain but she is a little dingy and could have meant Space Mountain or missed typed . I responded asking her for more details but have not heard anything else back.

Reports are that Splash Mountain is getting lap bars this time in addition to the usual January refurb. Legality issues with idiots standing apparently.

Rumors have long floated around that Splash would get lap bars. From the most recent information, it appears that it might actually be happening during this year's refurb. I'll see if I can dig up one of the earlier threads talking about it.

Edited to add: Here's the thread from a few weeks ago. http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2633203

Hmmm, interesting!
They are currently closed for refurb...I guess it's within the realm of possibilities that they installed lap bars, odd since they've operated so long without them. Never know though - maybe some insurance issue.
Keep us posted if she answers you!

She responded back with that it was Splash Mountain and that logs are cycling without anyone in them and you could see the lap bars clearly. I told her I wanted I pic or I would not believe it!! ;)

I took the Backstage Magic Tour 2 weeks ago and saw the lap bars being placed.

I wonder how much this will effect the loading and unloading times of Splash. It was very efficient beforehand I can see this slowing it down a noticeable bit.

true but I could also see people trying to stand up on the ride too
saftey is something Disney really cares about

Compared to the 5-30 minute stops each time an idiot stands up, it will be miniscule. I also had multiple CMs confirm the lap bars while I was there last weekend.

I've been there before too it is annoying, I wish they would eject people everytime they do that, a couple ejections would spread over the internet like wildfire and it woudl stop. But then I think of the major effect that just adding gates to TSM has caused and it could cause a noticable difference.

I have to say that I'm happy they are getting them. My DD-16 is terrified to get back on after going on in 2007. She is tall and quite thin/lightweight, and as we went over the "edge" and down, she felt as if she were flying up in the air. (I did not have the same issue ;) )No matter how hard I tried to convince her she wasn't going to hit her head, there are much taller persons who ride, she won't go on again. While I do agree that the lap bars won't speed anything up, I do think it is appropriate for the nature of the ride. And maybe we can all get on it again!

What else did the refurb do?

DH could barely fit now because of his size. I'm not so sure he'll fit at all anymore now that there are lap bars.

Wow.... I'm kinda glad there are lap bars- I always felt unsecured!!! Is it one lap bar like BTMRR or two like EE?
