Land/Sea Trip Report - I *Promise* to Inform and *Hope* to Entertain!

Well, you got me there, Wallyb. I'll have to Google that one and report back. :surfweb:

You should you payed for it too.
And so did every other tax payer :sad2:
But thanks ... our traffic is much better here in Bean Town.

We had decided that we wanted to spend our last night “on land” at the Studios where I knew we would be treated to an incredible showing of Fantasmic. DH and I had seen, and had been wowed by, Fantasmic on our last vacation to Disney World nine years ago, and, since I had been prepping The Big with YouTube highlights for months, I knew that it was going to be a huge hit. Also, DH desperately wanted to ride the Rockin’ Rollercoaster since I had refused to ride it during our last trip. At this point, since we were getting so Disney-transportation savvy, we decided to brave the busses to the Studios.

When we got to the Studios, it was wall-to-wall people. FastPasses for Rockin’ Rollercoaster were long gone and the standby line was 60 minutes. But, in an effort to show my appreciation to DH for his laundry washing, I told him to get in line and that The Big and I would find something to entertain ourselves.

I had actually seen on my way in that the Beauty And The Beast show was beginning soon, so The Big and I were all set. I calculated that if DH was in line for 60 minutes at RR that that would leave us ample time to get a good seat for Fantastmic. So, The Big and I made our way to the BATB theater. We actually scored some good seats on the second tier, right in the middle with a good view of the stage. About that time, we got treated to a wonderful pre-show: The Harlem Gospel Choir. Well, about 15 minutes in, it became clear that the Choir *was* the show. Although I'm not a fan of organized religion, I am a music lover, and these folks really wowed me with their fabulous voices, which were all the more incredible because of their faith. The Big really enjoyed the concert as well, although I’m not sure that the way she was shaking her booty to the music was appropriate. Oh well, she’s three.

Anyway, the show ended a little before 6:00 p.m., which meant that DH should be getting out of RR any minute. So, The Big and I waited, and waited, and waited. DH finally made it to our designated meeting spot at about 6:15 p.m. and, by that point, I was DONE with the crowds at the Studios, and I also knew that we’d have a hard time finding a decent seat at Fantasmic at that point. So we left, but not without my extracting a promise from DH that we would definitely come to The World for at least 7 days next year so we could have ample time to do everything we missed this go around. Oh, by the way, DH said that the RR was worth every minute of wait time. He said that it’s the best ride he’s ever been on. Anyway, after debating about what we were going to do, we decided that MK (and Wishes) would be a great way to end our trip.

During this trip, we really had to pick our battles as far as parks and events. Believe me, this is the biggest drawback about doing the Land/Sea package. There just doesn’t seem to be enough time to really do the parks, which leaves you feeling really lacking. For example, since we had always planned on doing Fantasmic, we skipped viewing Wishes at MK and instead compromised and viewed it at the Poly beach. Anyway, viewing Wishes at Poly was cool, but it was nothing compared to viewing it at MK.

MK didn’t feel as busy at the Studios, and we were able to do a few things before Wishes: Barnstormer (a few times), Pirates (since DH missed out that morning), and BTMR. We ended up on the Frontierland bridge for Wishes which, even though it’s a good place, definitely reveals that the fireworks don’t go off exactly behind the castle. I’m so glad that we did Wishes that night, though. It was like a little slice of heaven with the three of us all holding hands, listening to that sweet song, and viewing the awesome fireworks. Even though we were sad that it was our last day at the parks, it was a wonderful way to end that portion of our trip….until I decided that we should stop by Main Street Bakery on our way out to get some coffee. Along with 8 billion of my closest friends.

It was probably only really bad for about 10 minutes, but I felt myself starting to go over the edge because we literally could NOT MOVE! YIKES! :scared: Of course, we eventually made it to the Bakery and ordered our coffees and treats. A word of caution - - if you are a Starbucks drinker, DO NOT think that a cappuccino from the Main Street Bakery will resemble a Starbucks cappuccino. Don’t even waste your money. Blech.

Well, guys, this concludes the Land portion of our trip (finally, right? :rotfl: ). For us, three days just wasn’t enough time at the parks, and DH and I walked away feeling like we missed a lot of the “must dos” because there just wasn’t enough time. I guess what I’m trying to say is even though this type of package looks good on paper (i.e., the best of both worlds), in reality we found that we were just way too rushed.

Now, onto our Sea portion. :woohoo: Thanks very much to everyone who has hung in there with me this far - I hope that my next installments won't disappoint!!

Here We Go! On to the ship! Weeeee!

Hi again, Still enjoying your TR. Have a question for you about your last day. I'm assuming your last day at the WDW was on Saturday. We were thinking of doing Fantasmic our last night too but I'm sure it's going to be crazy crowded. The schedule of events shows that HS will have two showing of Fantasmic our last night, one at 8 and one at 10 (I think). Did you ever consider going to the late show so that the crowds would be less? I know it's late and we need to hit the ship in the morning, but do you think that would be crazy?

Can't wait to read your sea trip report. I've already copied your daughter's dress and makeover, now let's see what else I can copy:rolleyes1 Gotta see what you guys did for pirate night. That's my latest project.

:goodvibes :surfweb: I'm diligently writing my next installment (while I'm supposed to be working no less - LOL). See what I do for my DIS peeps?

Hi, Pam! I'm so glad to hear that you decided on a dress. I bet that your sweet Destiny will look like such a little angel! And, just to tease you, pirate night yielded my absolute favorite, favorite, favorite picture of our entire trip. I CAN'T WAIT to post it!!!! :rotfl: :cutie: :rotfl2:

About Fantasmic, you are correct that it was a Saturday, and it honestly did not even cross my mind to wait until the later showing. I cannot adequately express how many people were at the Studios that night - it was unbelievable! You couldn't even walk through the main streets without bouncing off of people, and I just wanted to get out as soon as possible. I didn't even snap one picture during the entire time we were there - can you believe THAT?

However, in fairness, since we were waiting for DH to come out of Rockin' Rollercoaster right at the popcorn stand in front of the entrance to the Fantasmic theater, I'm sure we saw (and were surrounded by) significantly more people than were in the rest of the park. In hindsight (and now that you mention it), it totally would have been a much better plan to go to the Studios later in the night and attempt the later showing of Fantasmic. If you guys can swing the late hour, I think that going to the later show would be a much better idea.

Well hurry up and get those pirate night pics posted, I can't wait. Just kidding, you are doing a great job and I know it takes time. I'll try to do a trip report after our trip in April but I'm sure it won't even come close to yours. I'm an accountant and I write like one too.

I know what you mean about crowds. Last time we did the land/sea our final night at the park, Saturday of course, was packed as well. Because we stayed at the poly and MK was open late that night, we just went over to MK that night thinking it would be a nice time to jump on some rides and catch the fireworks up close. We were shocked by the number of people there. The lines for the rids were terrible and it was a bummer. Watching the parade at night and seeing the fireworks up close made it worth while though. We enjoyed it despite the crowd.

Because we are staying at Beach Club this time, HS is only a boat ride away. That's why I was hoping to catch the late show. Hope it works out. You know how it goes, plans are made to be broken. I'll just have to be ready to go with the flow.

Have a great day and as always, look forward to reading more.

Pam

Awesome TR !! :thumbsup2
DH, DD ( 3 yrs ) and myself are planning on a land&sea vac in september.
So, do you think we should book them seperately ?
Any additional input about this from other DIS members is appreciated.
thx

Great trip report thank you. My family and I are doing the the Land/Sea Poly/Wonder leaving in a week. We're doing the BBB as well.

Was wondering what long house you stayed at, that was pictured and did you request it?

Also any quick tips would be appreciated.

Enjoyed your report and Big is beautiful. :)

Pam, I definitely will be looking forward to your TR, so I'll be stalking the TR Boards after April. I think that you will be surprised at how easily it comes to you once you get going. Also, I can't wait to hear how you liked the Beach Club. If we go back for 2010, I would really like to stay at the BC (if I can convince DH to stay off the monorail). Anyway, take care and chat with you soon!

Or we might mutiny

No mutiny today, Wallyb. Next installment coming right up! :goodvibes

Sponge, what are your price differences in booking the packages separately versus booking them together? Also, would your Category put you in a Deluxe resort? If so, which one?? If you don't really care about your resort, you could always book a Moderate and save that way as well. Anyway, if you will give me a bit more information, I will definitely try and help. Happy planning!!

WOW, just one more week of waiting! That is so exciting!! We stayed in the Fugi building on the second floor. Our initial room (before we got it changed because of our photoshoot) actually would have had a patio, but I'm not sure what longhouse it would have been located in. Since we used a TA for this, I'm not sure if she requested a particular longhouse or not. However, I really liked the location of the Fugi building - it was right next to the main building and very close to the pools. As to any last minute quick tips, I can't really think of anything else... Just enjoy the rush at the parks because the cruise will just be soooooo relaxing and refreshing. :cloud9:

We faced the morning of the 9th with mixed emotions. I actually woke up around 6:00 a.m. and got a shower and started packing. When DH woke up, we chatted some more about going back in 2008, and, remembering that we had a “bounce-back” offer in our room, DH suggested that we call and just see how much a trip would cost us. Since we were all monorail-spoiled by this time, DH insisted that we stay at either the Contemporary or return to the Poly (I was sure that the GF would be cost prohibitive so I didn’t even ask). We had actually walked into the Contemporary building and I found it a bit stark (but that’s probably the point), so I was hopeful that we could return to the Poly. The “bounce-back” CM that helped us was very accommodating, and found us a garden view room at the Poly for 9 days in September (the package deal actually saved us about $1,000). So, that being done, I find myself uber-excited about the prospect of going back so soon. YAY! :yay: :woohoo:

Since we were driving to the cruise terminal, we really didn’t have any set schedule other than we knew that we had to board the boat before 3:00 p.m. So, we had a leisurely breakfast at Kona (DH loved, loved, loved the Tonga Toast by the way; I would have loved it sans the bananas) and just took it easy. After the rush-rush of the parks, it was so nice to just relax.

Now, one word of caution if you are driving to the terminal: the map to the cruise terminal that is supplied when you check in is *horrible*. Said "map" is a 4 inch square piece of paper with no writing on it – just a random map from some random starting point. I’m quite sure that we ended up going the wrong way as soon as we left the Poly, but it definitely didn’t take us long to realize that we had absolutely no idea where we were going. So, after paying various tolls and not being any closer to the two main roads that are marked on the map, we finally asked a gentleman running one of the toll booths how to get to Port Canaveral. His directions were spot on and we finally managed to find the main road that had eluded us for so long. A few more tolls later, and we finally see the beautiful Wonder.

Also, I have to give props to the traffic-director CMs – they make it so easy to navigate through the area. DH dropped The Big and me off at the front of the terminal, told us to check in, and he went and parked. I think that I previously mentioned that checking in for the cruise at the resort is the *biggest* perk in doing the Land/Sea package. It was a zoo in the terminal, and it looked like there were a lot of people who had been sitting around waiting for quite some time. Well, when I told the CM that we were on the Land/Sea package, we were sent directly to the boat because our KsTTW were already programmed with our stateroom information.

Since I was already getting hungry, we decided to eat first and then check out the pools. We had the buffet at Beach Blanket which was just an incredible selection of tasty food – well above standard buffet fare. I had prepared myself in advance that the service would be out-of-this-world wonderful, but it really is amazing how friendly and accommodating the servers were during the entire cruise. And don’t even get me started about how incredible you feel the first time you walk by the dessert table – talk about wanting to turn cartwheels in the aisle.

Since The Big was chomping at the bit to go swimming, we decided to go ahead and check out the pool. Of course, per DIS-approved protocol, we had packed our swimsuits in a backpack because we knew that our luggage was not yet at our room. The Mickey Pool is fabulous, but I didn’t realize that it is only a couple feet deep. Nevertheless, our Big got into her swimsuit and promptly requested her floaties (even though the water only came to her chest). So, yes, our child was the cutie in the floaties, who was having the time of her life.

We finally dragged The Big away from the pool with many promises to return and decided to explore the ship a bit before the safety drill. It really is just beautiful – Disney just does it right. Before checking into our room, we also registered The Big for the Oceaneer’s Club. Just FYI, even though we registered her on-line, the process still took about 20 minutes.

We finally made it to Deck 7 and we were all very excited about seeing our room for the first time. DH did the honors: he slid his KTTW in the door and…nothing happened. (How’s that for a cliffhanger?). :rotfl:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO... I had to do it for everyone.. MORE.. MUST HAVE MORE... LOL
