Land/Sea Trip Report - I *Promise* to Inform and *Hope* to Entertain!

Disclaimer: Okay, guys, let me totally apologize for leaving you all hanging for so long!! I totally was intending to come back and post the second part of Day 1 right after my cliffhanger, but work just went crazy on me. Isn't it a shame that work trumps The DIS?!? Anyway, I hope everyone is having a great weekend!!

AAAAAH!!! No, you didn't just leave us hanging!!! Just when you got to the part that I had been waiting for the most!!!:confused3 Can't wait to read more!:thumbsup2

(Hanging head). :flower3: By the way, have you guys decided on Cirque?

I just found your trip report and am enjoying every post!! We just booked our first cruise for this November. My DDs and I are doing the land/sea package. None of us have ever cruised before so I'm excited and nervous all at the same time. Can't wait to read more!! :thumbsup2

Thank you so much for reading, Devalsam! I totally understand what you mean about feeling excited and nervous, but very soon the excited part will completely take over!

What was your cabin? We are on the 7th deck as well....leave in 2 days!

I started a trip report ..... and lost the page after working on it for and hour...still fuming...wil restart (on word).....later tonight.

Great report.....

OH - you poor thing - I can't believe your lost your TR! That is such a bummer!! As to our cabin, we were in 7614. It really was in a good location because it was really close to the elevator.

Okay - Now she's toying with us!:confused3
She's gone all power mad.
;)

Hey our room's on 7 too - I think it's 7070

LOLOLOLOLOL - I wrote the disclaimer above just for you, Wallyb! ;)

When DH’s KTTW didn’t work, he tried mine, and then I tried them both (because, you know, if a magnetic door key doesn’t work the first time or the second time, you’ve got to know that the third (errr, fourth) time’s a charm). :sad2: Well, despite my efforts, we were still denied access (big surprise, right?). So, back down to Deck 3 we go where we were informed that we need new KsTTW for the cruise portion of our trip. Upon receiving our new cards, we headed back up to Deck 7 for our second attempt and…we were given the green light. WHEW.

Our room was perfect in every way. We had ordered a gift basket from The Perfect Gift for The Big and it was just gorgeous (and HUGE). The Big was so very excited that her “friend” Ariel sent her such wonderful things and it was by-far her favorite part of the cruise.

My first stop was the verandah and I could definitely see that we were going to get a lot of use out of that. :cloud9: Already we were all starting to feel the stress of touring the parks seep out of us. I knew that we were going to relax and recharge, and I was so excited about that prospect.

After the safety drill, we headed up to Deck 9 for the Sailaway Party. Since I hate being late for anything we got there early and there were probably only 10 other people on the deck, which means that we were front and center of the stage. We had such a fabulous view for the Party…until it actually started.

Since we didn’t do any of the parades at the parks, I didn’t experience any of the “jockeying for position” that I read about constantly on The DIS. I guess I just didn’t realize that grown adults would be so rude to butt in front of another adult (who had been there before them) to get a better view. Now, I didn’t at all mind the kids that want to be up front (because I can see over them), but I just do not get why adults think that they don’t have to follow the rules. Well, I’m happy to report that no adults butted in front of me, but I certainly had to tell a few people that their KIDS were certainly more than welcome to stand in front of me, but that I didn’t appreciate being stepped all over. Anyway, once the party actually started, armed with my delish “sailaway” drink, I found myself rocking to the music right along with the Disney celebs. One word of advice – it really is worth it to go early so your child can get up front – The Big loved that Goofy and Chip and Dale were giving her Hi-Fives during the entire party.

We had requested and received early seating and our first dinner was to be at Triton’s. After reviewing the tentative menu at Triton’s on The DIS, this meal was actually the one I was least looking forward to. However, if the buffet at Beach Blanket was any indication of the quality of the food, I knew that I would be able to find something delish. I was also looking forward to meeting our tablemates.

Well, we arrived at Triton’s and were seated immediately at a large 8-top table. This was also the first time that we got to meet our wonderful server, O’Neil, and our sweet-as-pie assistant server, Marie. O’Neil informed us that we were to be seated with two other families – another party of 3 and a party of 2, and asked us to wait a few minutes so they could arrive. Well, after waiting longer than a few minutes, it was determined that the other parties were no-shows and we were allowed to order. We felt really unloved, though – just the three of us at our big honkin’ table. :guilty:

Dinner at Triton’s was really good. DH and I both had the steak and The Big had macaroni and cheese. I think that she was still a bit full from the buffet, honestly – she had eaten her weight in shrimp for lunch. After our meal, we decided that we we going to blow off the Michael Harrison show (which was the night’s showcase entertainment) and instead decided to take The Big back to the pool. Since we ran ourselves so ragged at the parks and since The Big was such a trooper, I really had a goal to make sure that we let The Big dictate our schedules on the cruise.

The pool that night was a ghost town and, upon placing my toes into the pool, I quickly understood why. It was freezing! However, DH (being the good dad) took The Big into the Goofy pool and I hung out in the hot tub. Even submerged in the hot tub I was still freezing and DH and The Big were faring worse than that in the pool. So, we left and gratefully snuggled into our beds.

Sorry to hear that you didn't have any tablemates on the first night. The same thing happened to the DH and I on our first cruise (a 3 nighter)...actually we didn't have any tablemates for the entire cruise!

Still loving every minute of your report...can't wait for more!! Thanks for posting!

To think that only yesterday,
I was cheerful, bright and gay.
Looking forward to, and who wouldn’t do,
The role I was about to play.
But as if to knock me down,
Reality came around,
And without so much as a mere touch,
Cut me into little pieces.
Leaving me to doubt, all about God and His mercy,
Oh, if He really does exist,
Why did He desert me?
And in my hour of need,
I truely am, indeed,
Alone again, naturally.

So busy being a smart "you know what" forgot to ask my question-
Was this key issue - a key problem - or somthing you guy did wrong?
I thought once you did the land check in and the went over and did the Sea part at the WDW hotel you were set ... done... complete. For both.

Wow Crystal! Nice report. I haven't been to these boards in close to the year and your's is the first TR I've read since me and the wife did our land/sea honeymoon. Good job:thumbsup2 . BTW nice pics. What kind of camera are you using? Looks very professional.

I am loving your trip report, in 2006 we took the same trip you did and O-Neil and Marie were our servers too. I enjoyed them and so did my children. Your daughter is cute as ever and I love the pictures you post. I am enjoying reliving our trip through your report. I have since seperated from my spouse, but am planning to take my children on another DC in October. Of course now my kids have seen a commercial for a Nickelodeon cruise and are pushing for that instead. We'll see!!!

Can't wait until your next installment and more pictures too please!!!!!

Odd that the pools were cold. Even on our TransAtlantic, when it was really cold outside, the pools were warm. I wonder if they had just changed the water.

ahh this is the part I have been waiting for :)

I think that this is the part that everyone's been waiting for - an actual cruise TR on the Cruise Board - LOLOLOLOLOL!

Hey, Girly! I hope you're having a great week. As to being sans tablemates, we totally were "pshawing" the whole thing, saying that we didn't *need* tablemates and that we were perfectly happy on our own. We were kidding ourselves, though - we felt so small!

:rolleyes1 :rolleyes1 :rolleyes1

Wallyb, I never for a second would believe that you would ever let your wit get in the way of a good question!! As always, you have come through again with something appropriate for the occasion!!

As to our KsTTW, I really don't know what happened. When we checked in at the resort, we were told that our KsTTW had our stateroom information already encoded. I always thought it had something to do with our changing rooms at the Poly, but, to this day, I still don't know what the deal was. We ended up with 2 sets of KsTTW, and the ones that worked for our stateroom were nautical-themed. The CM at Deck 3 also told us that our old cards still had charging privileges, though, so they were still active during our entire cruise. Just try and figure that one out. :confused3 It was bizarre!

Great update! Loved the pic with the basket.

Thank you, Our2Girls! The Big was definitely lovin' her basket, and the gals at The Perfect Gift did a wonderful job!!

Why were the pools so cold? Aren't they heated???
Deb

Deb, I'm not really sure why they were so cold. Perhaps it was a combination of the wind or something, but it was chilly!!

Welcome (back) to The DIS, kalel, and welcome to my TR! Thanks for reading!! Thank you for the compliments about my pictures. I shoot with an Olympus E-500, which is a dSLR. Photography is very important to me, so it's always great to hear good feedback - thank you again!! :goodvibes

Thank you Butterx3! I agree that O'Neil and Marie were just fabulous! I wish I would have been able to take THEM home as our souveniers! I bet a Nick cruise would be fun too, although I imagine it would be difficult to ever cruise on any cruise line after having cruised on Disney. Our neighbors want to do a 2009 cruise with us and are pushing for another cruise line because of the gambling aspect and because they say that DCL is more expensive. We are standing firm, though, that Disney is the *best* and I think that we'll end up swaying them over to our side. Anyway, thanks again for reading and enjoy planning your October cruise!

Yeah, after having read that the pools were heated, we were honestly surprised that the Goofy pool was so chilly that night. You could be right that they could have just changed the water or something, but, given that first experience, we did not venture out again at night to swim, so I can't speak to whether or not it was a fluke. However, during the day, the pools were just heaven! :cloud9:

Yeah... that is nutz!

Day two of our cruise found us in Nassau. Leading up to the cruise, we debated for months about whether or not to drop $300.00 on the dolphin excursion before finally settling on *not* doing it. I think that The Big would have really enjoyed the dolphin encounter, but I also know that DH would have been the one having to carry her if she didn’t enjoy it, so I totally understood his suggestion that we wait until she is a bit older. Instead of dolphins, our plan was to explore the shopping district of Nassau and to then hang out at the pool for the remainder of the day (can you guys see how diligently I was in trying to do fun “Big” stuff and not rushing her everywhere?).

I actually can’t believe I’m admitting this to you all, but my sole purpose of even shopping in Nassau was so I could try and find a cheap (or even knock-off) Coach purse and some (cheap) Coach sunglasses. I own two Coach purses but I purchased them before I had The Big and I now find myself balking at the thought of ever paying MSRP for another Coach anything. (However, if we are discussing camera lenses, that's a whole 'nother story.) Anyway, to me, a great purse has just become an extravagance of my pre-parent days. Sadly. :guilty: Anyway, I still love the Coach brand and I *really* had convinced myself that I could get a new purse and even new sunglasses in Nassau for the cost of just a purse in the States.

So, we ate breakfast at Parrot Cay and headed off to Nassau for our fun-filled day of shopping. And, YIKES – let me tell you guys - Nassau is a freaking dump! It’s dirty, smelly, crazy-scary, crowded, and the Coach purses (et al.) are the same price as the ones in the States! I cannot to this day believe that I so enthusiastically braved the street peddlers, the craziness, and the general funk at Nassau just to encounter the same prices as are in my clean and bright shopping malls! UG and darn that luck!

Needless to say, we hightailed it back to the boat in record time and we decided that the pool was just the thing to cleanse us of our (my) disappointment in Nassau. The pool and ice cream, actually. So, we changed and headed back to the Mickey Pool, The Big still sporting her floaties.

DH and I (being “only-child parents”) hung out with The Big until she found a friend and completely blew us off, at which point we found the closest empty lounge chair (which was located in the second row of chairs from the pool) and kept our eyes firmly affixed on The Big for any signs of peril or distress. Well, after about 20 minutes of bopping and weaving ourselves so we could be in the line of sight of The Big at all times, I decided that we should move to one of the vacant chairs in the front row. I purposely picked a chair that had been deserted since our arrival at the pool. So, we moved ourselves onto the lounge chair in question. And we were promptly informed by a woman (I'll call her Seat-Saving Woman or SSW, for short) sitting 4 chairs to the left that that particular chair was “saved.” The conversion actually proceeded like this (this gets messy, but I feel compelled to share):

SSW: Ummmm, that seat is saved.

Me: (In the process of plopping my stuff down in the chair) - We are trying to keep an eye on our three year old in the pool and I didn’t see that anybody has sat in this chair during the entire 45 minutes we’ve been at the pool.

SSW: You can’t sit there! I’m saving these seats (pointing to the entire front row) for my family.

Me: (Heckles starting to rise; I don’t deal well with gratuitous rudeness or wanton unreasonableness) - Well, I’m sorry, but these 6 other seats haven’t been sat in for 45 minutes either. (Pregnant pause). Besides, seat saving is specifically prohibited pursuant to the Navigator.

DH: (Booking it back to the pool, the poor guy).

SSW: (Giving me the evil eye). I’m saving that SEAT. You can’t sit there.

Me: (Slowwwwllllyyy stretching myself out on the chair). I’m sorry (why I kept saying that, I don’t know because I *really* wasn’t sorry) but the rules are on my side; you aren’t allowed to save seats. You can’t just go dropping towels on every seat and claim that they are saved.

SSW: Well, when my mother gets here you are going to have to move.

Me: (Eyebrow raised). Ummm hmmmmm.

SSW’s Mom a while later: Um, excuse me, but this seat is saved.

SSW to Her Mom: She’s (meaning me) getting ready to get up. I told her that this seat was saved.

Me: As a matter of fact, I’m not getting ready to get up. But, feel free to sit in one of the other 6 seats that have been saved for you. My daughter is still in the pool and I still need to watch her. I’m sorry (there it is again), but it specifically says in the Navigator that saving lounge chairs on Decks 9 and 10 is prohibited.

SSW: Well, your husband is watching your daughter so you don’t need to be in these chairs.

Me: Listen, why don’t you go (…jump off a bridge...) inform a Crew Member that I’m sitting in a seat you have “saved” and further inform said CM that you have 6 other seats “saved” and see what the CM says. I *promise* you that the rules are on my side. This really isn’t as big a deal as you’re making it. (I even did the quote things with my fingers when I said the word "saved" – I’m *such* a dork sometimes.)

SSW’s Mom: I’ll just sit in this one (taking one of the chairs next to her daughter).

SSW: UG.

Well, at that point I could (would) have sat in my lounge chair all day, but The Big was ready to go about 20 minutes after that last conversation with the Seat-Saving Woman and her mom. So, I got out of my chair and walked away, but not before I hear SSW tell a new person who had plopped their stuff down in my now-vacated lounge chair “Ummm, that seat is saved.” Arrgggghhhh!

wow unbeliveable! That is the stuff (you try not to sweat the small stuff but come on!)that would drive me insane and probably ruin my day! However I unlike you (good for you) probably would have never said anything, then all day would have thought of Stuff I "should" have said! good for you, for holding your ground! ... I can't stand when people think the rules don't apply to them!

You just addressed two of the potential problems I've been a little fretful over. Do we attempt to go into Nassau and what if we can't find deck chairs?
(Imagine fretting over things that aren't going to happen for over a year and a half from now... welcome to my world. )

Seriously though, was it hard to get chairs? I hate when I take the kids to the swim club in the summer and cannot find even one chair for all of our gear and me! I am so relieved to know that at least the whole "saving" thing is technically prohibited.

Crystal.....we just came off of the 7 day in January and I have to tell you that each moring I went for a walk as the sun started to rise, and there were already people scoping out the pool area placing towels down on chairs, that we would watch later and no one would ever sit in them. The day of the Patriot/chargers game, we (24 in all) grabbed a total of 7 chairs and we squished in, and at one point a person yelled over at one of our adult women, "hey, don't touch that stroller" as she moved it slightly out of her way. He was in the pool yelling at her!!! People just need to learn to relax....isn't that why we go on vacation????

cheryl

Hurray for you! I would've fought for the seat, too. I actually fought over a chair with one guy. We just wanted one chair for our whole family. He was stacking chairs to save them for his family. I took one and sat down, cuz I had a sleepy child. He nearly hit me. I was looking for a CM, and I think he sensed it, cuz he back off. I just wanted to see the fireworks without dropping the baby!
