Lame tattoos

I have another one though - a good friend of mine from HS got a tat across his chest that says "The dude abides" I think its from a movie.... but REALLY?!!?!?!?!? :rotfl2::rotfl2:

The Big Lebowski.

The other thing I don't understand is people who don't speak an Asian language want tattoos in Japanese or Chinese calligraphy. How do they know that's really what is says?

I remember one time my father (who does speak, read, and write Chinese and we are not Asian) pointed at someone's tattoo in Chinese and said "I don't think that's what they wanted tattooed."

There was a short-lived TV show that addressed that, it was called Committed. DH is Korean and has "friendship" tattooed on his chest in Chinese, but he did a LOT of research to make Absolutely Sure that it said what he wanted it to say. Anyway, he thought that scene in that show was absolutely hilarious, especially since it's so possible (especially in the Seattle area) to do your due diligence to make sure you're getting what you want to get.

:thumbsup2 Last summer my DD's and I went to a wedding shower and there was a lady maybe mid20's we kept staring at her, because her back looked very hairy she had a dress on with a low back, after we got up to eat we realized she was just tattooed all over her back. It was nasty looking.

Jmho

It's too bad you spent so much time, especially at a bridal shower, focusing on that. A friend and I got tiny ankle tattoos that completely distracted some of a bride's aunts during the ceremony, and it was just such a SHAME that they let that bother them so much that they didn't pay attention. (then again, that friend just got divorced after 20 years of marriage, so in the end I supposed it was OK)

I actually want a tattoo, but don't know where to start finding a reputable shop to get one!

We have multiple shops here, and I need to start asking people with tattoos where they got theirs.

I don't know about Aberdeen, but if you're ever in Tacoma, House of Tattoo on 6th ave is very reputable. And it's been there for a long time. And I went to college with the woman that created the business (she was an art major).

I went to a place down near the bases that looked awful, but that woman did her apprenticeship with him, and he was reputable as well. Good ol' Ace.

So I have a tattoo that was an OK idea (to get one at that time with the friend I got it with) but it was a dumb image ("what do you want to get?" "I dunno, what do you want?" "Hey, that funky stylized flower design on your early 90s near-stirrup pants is cool, let's get that in yellow, orange and blue!"). I've wanted to cover it up for AGES but didn't want to insult my friend...until she texted and facebooked me from the tattoo parlor, 30 minutes before she was having it covered up. So now all bets are off.

The problem, however, is that it hurt like almost nothing else. And since I doubt I can find someone reputable who would give me a tattoo while in active labor in the future should I get pg again, AND I certainly hope I don't have another posterior with hand-at-face baby to cause that much pain...so really, I don't know if I'll be able to get it covered up...

Sigh.

My husband knows Latin and we once saw a guy with large Latin words on his leg. My DH kept staring, until I finally poked him to stop. He then told me that the tattoo meant something like, "I'm a huge idiot." (Or some such along those lines, it was a while ago!) He still wishes he'd had the courage to ask the guy if he knew what his tattoo said.

I have a small tattoo on my left inner wrist that says "forever" in my mother's handwriting. I don't cover it (though I easily could) but it rarely gets noticed, which suits me just fine.

I don't care for tattoo's. My husband has a very nice one one his forearm, it's a maple leaf and a scroll, on the scroll it says "100% Canadian" it's really nice, really it is...except he is now American too... He says he needs to do "something" with it.

I don't really like tattoos in general.

My husband has a lot of lame tattoos. When he was getting them I pointed out that although he found them funny at the time, the joke might get old. He actually admits, 10+ years later that I was right about some of them. He still defends a handful of other really lame ones but I am willing to wait another 10+ years for another round of "I told you so's"

That is such a beautiful sentiment.

I have a small solid purple mickey head inside my right ankle. I said that if I was gonna go thru all that pain by golly I was gonna be able to see it. Im planning on getting a small Dopey head on the inside of the left ankle.

And as for the poster who was worried about being 80 or 90 and regretting a tattoo. Honey when u are that age, tattoos will be the least of your worries. You will just be thanking God everyday that u can get up out of bed.:goodvibes

I saw a guy the other day with our local area code tatooed prominently on his arm, in parentheses. I thought that was unusual. Not "lame" I guess, because tatoos usually have some personal, maybe secret, meaning. But unusual.

I know quite a few people from Champaign that have this exact tatoo.

I have two big butterflies on my ankle I totally regret. They are pretty but not very original. I got one when I was 17 and the other when I was 19. Oh well.

I do not like tattoos. My husband and I think that we are the only 2 people on earth who don't have one. As another poster said, what seems cool or important to you now, will be meaningless in 20 years. There will be a new movie you like, a new boyfriend, husband, girlfriend or wife. You will move. Emigrate to another country, you will find a new vacation spot that you love. You will no longer even remember the names of your frat brothers, much less care about your frat.

Now that I'm done ranting. In recent years since tattoos have become such the fad, and have become larger and more obvious, many employers are now instituting dress code policies banning visible tattoos. If you are young, or still working on a career consider this before you get a tattoo. Do you really want to wear long sleeves, or pants, or turtlenecks, or have to cover it with make-up every day?

My tattoos are part of me. I can't imagine myself without them. They're meaningful and important. They will never lose meaning. So speak for yourself.

Sometimes I just don't understand why people on the Dis have to post things that are not necessary to post.

Agreed. Pretty sure the arts, a friend who has passed, my aunt who passed, my Polynesian heritage and my kids will still be important to me in 20 years. I've had my first tattoo for almost ten years, and I'm still as in love with it now as I was when I got it.

I beleive they were speaking for their own self, why get all defensive and personal with a fun topic...geez lighten up!

Grow up.
This is a message board and I was replying to a post. Of course I was speaking for myself, because it is my opinion, as is everything else everyone posted. Perhaps I hit a raw nerve, because you are being overly sensitive about one particular post. ...and at 20, you have no idea what will, or will not be meaningful to you in 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, or 60 years, but being older and more mature than you, I do know the things that seemed so special and important to me at 20 aren't even on my radar now.

Are you refering to the KC and the sunshine tattoo that I begged mom for when I was 17...LOL That would have looked real nice on my 50 yr. old body now...and my grown kids would have loved it too. :rotfl2:

That is a gang symbol or a code for prison time. You know on TV they have the three number code for the crime.

Hi All.
I have 2 tatts. one is a rearing horse with my favorite horses name. the other is a horse head with my nick name. my only regret is they will be destroyed when i die.
been thinking of getting a donald duck tatt. but don't know whereto put it.

I have yet to come up with anything I would want on my body forever. No matter what I think would be cool now I can't imagine sitting around at 80 or 90 and still thinking it was a good idea. I'm not opposed to getting a tattoo but until I think of something I want on me forever I won't be getting one. I do have an idea of one I might get once I run the Roma marathon but even that one isn't definite.

The only ones I think are dumb are the ones in locations that can't be easily covered up when at work or at another formal setting, not matter that they are. Those neck tattoos for example just seem silly to me but it isn't my body so I don't really care. Also, getting your wife/girlfriend's name or initials tattooed on you is kind of dumb considering the likelihood of the relationship not lasting.
I agree 100%. I WANT a tattoo but I can't think of anything good at all. Or anywhere to actually get it on my body.

There are definitely some lame tattoos out there and I've had so many friends say they wish they hadn't gotten that tattoo of an elephant on their hip.

I definitely think a tattoo is something you need to think long and hard about before getting. Then, after thinking, you should wait like 6 months to make sure you really want it and that it isn't a silly design. :rotfl:

I don't like tattoos for me, but to each their own. I'd just say think carefully about where the tat is. We were at my nephew's baptism last summer. Several babies were being baptized. One of the moms had on a delicate sleeveless dress. On her shoulder was some sort of large pouncing animal, like a tiger or panther. It was just a strange sight with this delicate dress.

Seriously. My BIL is a dermatologist. Not a day goes by when he doesn't have somebody coming in to ask about getting a tattoo removed. It's painful, expensive, not covered by medical insurance, and often doesn't work very well. He tries to talk them out of it, but some people really grow to hate their tattoos.
