My family want to primitive camp :scared1: at Lake Powell this summer. We'll have our boat and Expedition, the usual tent and food/water. Any helpful tips and hints I should know about?

:thanks:

I did it a couple of summers ago. Lake camping is by far my favorite!

In the summer bring and drink lots of water! I did not and ended up with heat exhaustion. That was not fun. By night 3 I ended up going with my friend to his house so they could cool me off and get me lots of water. Being on the lake makes you think your a lot more hydrated than you are.

Also it does get warm early in the mornings, so I had problems sleeping in the tent cause it would get ridiculously warm early.

Bring a watch and set it to either AZ or Utah time (in the summer they are different) and the lake is on the border so you cell phone time will skip sometimes. If you need to return a boat rental or something so you know the actual time. Plus my cell died on me cause of spilling juice on it.

There is a grocery store and Walmart in Page to get stuff for the lake. So if you don't want to cart it all from home or forgot something.

You can cliff jump at lake powell just know the is a limit on how high of cliff you can jump off of and the patrol knows how high that is. And if you are check to make sure there are no rocks below.

Bring cheap floats (or noodles) so if they get lost or pop it won't matter. Target usually has them for like $5. There nice to just relax on.

Hope your family has fun!!

Thank you SO much. There isn't much info on the Internet aside from a site or two. Cheap floats are a great idea. We'll be bringing our boat and I don't believe renting anything.

Do you really just find a spot on the beach and set up camp? Not making a reservation feels unnerving.

I'll make sure we have plenty of drinking water! What did you do for meals. My plan is to get food in Page and pack with dry ice. I'd love to set up camp and stay beach bound the entire time without having to go back into town.

They sell fuel somewhere along the water I'm guessing?

I read we have to now have some sort of toilet with us. I've seen them ranging from $15 which is basically a lid on a trash bag to more high tech filtered systems.

Nothing scary about it! We do the same type of trip about 2x per year and it's lovely! The one and only thing I don't like is the sind that whips up every afternoon. Be prepared to stay inside your tent or trailer to read or prepare dinner or whatever. The crows will drive you nuts if you leave garbage/food out, so keep clean. We are not usual campers and ordinarily make gourmet meals while camping simply because we have the time for it while there. And, the fresh air makes everything taste better. :) If you're going for easy, take canned stuff, instant hashbrowns, oatmeal, lots of fruit and veggies that will keep.

Do take lots of water for drinking and washing. Keep your kids in lifejackets at all times, in the boat or not. There are far too many kids that drown here and medical help is nowhere near if something did happen.

Just find a spot on the beach that looks nice and set up shop. :)

Primitive Powell camping is a dream for some folks. Enjoy it!

As for the toilet, you can buy a cheap, small extra tent to put a low tech toilet into to keep it private. We use the type that seals when you "flush" it. Keep a sealable trash container (or even grocery bags) to throw baby wipes into.

Sounds romantic, eh? LOL

Never been Doris and I'm so excited!

Very romantic geekypeach :rotfl2: I can see my oldest teen rolling her eyes at the thought.

Bullfrog is closest to us, driving from Utah but some prefer to launch from Wahweap, does it make a huge difference?

Thank you. :goodvibes DH is a gourmet camping cook too, no chili from a can for this guy. I think we'll have a sleep tent for the 5 of us and a clothes/supplies tent too. Your advice is great! :thanks:
