So we're hunkering down for a spell of unemployment. Even though DH has a lot of job leads it will take time to process them, we will see at least several weeks of no paycheck so we have to weather that. We have some savings but not much, our cc debt is small. DH does qualify for unemployment but that's a drop in the bucket, but we'll take it, of course.
I'm fortunate to have a WAH job that I can up my hours, I can make $600--$1000/2 weeks, depends on the hours, etc at least I already have that so just crank it up. Good to have more than one egg in the basket.
We're both looking at being Cha Cha guides, just wish we'd applied sooner, but get started now. What's killing us is our Cobra which I carry from a past job and that option runs out soon. I've been stockpiling food when on sale so we shoud be ok with that, perhaps look at lowering our car insurance or switching companies but we need to act fast, they don't like to insure you if unemployed, might be better to stick with the same company and just increase the deductibles.
Also looking at the usual, cutting down on cable and cell phone, but really, dh needs the cell phone more than ever since he's doing a job search and the kids need theirs for security, so not much to cut there.
We're looking at changing electric companies to a cheaper rate, but there again I need to get on that right away, you can't change electric companies if unemployed! Seems your options really change while unemployed, you're stuck with higher payments on everything. At least we have some notice to work with, many here were just canned with absolutely no warning.
there's no loyalty to the worker anymore. You can devote years to a company, then one day you're just out with nothing, perhaps a little severence, perhaps nothing, all the while they continue to go on golf vacations, spas, etc. There should be some sort of law about notice, severence, etc person shouldn't live constantly wondering if this is their last day.
Its best to have a back up plan, at least I have my home job, that's something, a person really should have many eggs in many baskets. We're looking at this as a time of the cup being half-full. DH hasn't had a vacation for ages, he just keeps working, he's contract, so even if he gets a vacation off its unpaid. Perhaps he can at least spend Thanksgiving at home without trying to juggle work hours around it! We can weather 1-2 months of unemployment before things get really tight around here.
Does anyone know if we can get lowered mortgage payments? But I hesitate to call up and tell them we're unemployed, that might hurt us. Also, I'm looking at re-negoiating our cc interest, however, has anyone called a cc and told them they're unemployed? They might just cancel your whole cc! I'm also thinking of taking out another cc with a zero interest introductory rate, that could help float us for awhile.
Well, any more suggestions? I was thinking of applying for reduced lunch at school, but my daughter usually takes her lunch, anyways, she says the lunch is so small she prefers to bring her own. Also I'm not too sure I want the school to know our financial situation.
Also to raise some cash we're having a garage sale, sold some clothes to a re sale shop, selling books on
amazon, anything to raise extra cash, also I'm selling some stuff on Ebay, should sell for Christmas, its not much, but every bit helps. I'm really anxious about Christmas presents for my kids, even though its not as much as previous years, we need to celebrate the holidays, they're only children once. So now is a good time to get rid of old stuff, sell it for whatever, get something, also, we have a head start if we need to move clearing out this stuff!
Oh,well, perhaps this year Black Friday will be a nesessity!
