Hello board!

I'm fairly new to the boards and have just stumbled across this one. Had something strange happen to me and wanted to get some opinions from others. I'll try not to be too graphic.

This began in May. Below is my outline:

May 1st - beginning of my last 'cycle'
June 1st - no cycle
June 7th - took home pregnancy test - NEGATIVE
June 19 - went to DR. had blood and urine test - both NEGATIVE
June 25th - had blood/urine test again - NEGATIVE. Had both kinds of ultrasounds done. They found that the lining of my uterus was extremely thick. Suggested D&C
July 16th - Met with OB/GYN. Blood/urine test again - NEGATIVE. Discussed surgery for D&C and how long it would take me to get my biopsy results back. Scheduled surgery for July 30th.
July 30th - Admitted for surgery. Blood/urine tests done. All is set and I'm in the pre-operating room waiting for my surgeon. He walks in and informs me that the surgery has been cancelled because my test results were POSITIVE and that I am pregnant. He orders more blood work. I am then told that after testing that blood work that I am about 4 weeks pregnant.

I AM FLOORED! And my question is - If I am only 4 weeks along then I would have had to got pregnant around the 1st of July. I hadn't had a cycle since May and my uterus was very thick on June 25th so something MUST have been wrong before I was ever pregnant - right??

I am like SUPER confused here and wondered if any of you had ever been through this. I am still not convinced if I'm pregnant or not because all the other tests were negative and the dates of my cycle and all. My breasts have been sore and I've been VERY tired - like when Ive been pregnant before.

I just don't know what to think. Anyone have this happen???????

Well, I know that the people who reads tests are human and mistakes can be made. Could be that's what happened with the first round of Dr. tests, and maybe the home test was too early.I would get all your records together and get a second opinion. That said, sounds like you're going to have a baby!Congratulations :hyper: !!!!

Wow, you must be so confused! Thank goodness the test showed up positive before the surgery. I haven't had an experience like that, but I did have 2 false negative tests when I was pregnant with my daughter. I am very suprised, however, that the test showed up negative at the doctor's office. From what I've read, a woman secretes a certain hormone (sorry, can't remember the name of it) only when she's preganant. Therefore, she can never have a false positive (it's there or it isn't). However, she can have a false negative depending on the time of day the urine test is done. They are best done first thing in the morning. Anyway, congratulations! What a crazy way to find out you're pregnant!

I have also had a false negative...and she is 11 yrs old now. Good thing they did another test before the D&C.

With my DD, I had two negative tests before it came back positive, I was wearing maternity clothes by then...:sunny:

I can tell on me right away. However, my friend has a hard time with the testing. She has told me the same thing..she has been in maternity clothes before they figured out she was pregnant.

They will do ultrasounds and things while you are pregnant. So, right now, I would wait for those to see if anything else is wrong. If something else is wrong, it will have to wait 9 more months anyway. (40 weeks is 10 months not 9;) )

Congrats on your new little addition. This is very exciting:)

The hormone you're thinking of DisKim is HCG. On June 19th I had a HCG level of 5 which means there is no way I could have been pregnant. On July 30th my HCG level was over 2000.

See the original concern was that the thick lining of my uterus could have been cancerous. Chances were low because of my age, but the chance did exist. Thats why they were doing a biopsy.

My lining showed the thickening on june 25th. It was after that that I became pregnant. The doctor is showing no concern (thus far) about the thickening of the growth in my uterus lining BEFORE I was pregnant. What if it really was cancerous and then I got pregnant? I have asked him this but he keeps saying that the lining is thick due to the pregnancy. I just want to slap him and say - IT WAS THICK WITH GROWTH BEFORE I WAS PREGNANT YOU MORON!!!

Ok, that was probably out of line, but do you see my concern here? And my point?

I knew what you were asking..but again, at this point..the baby is the most important. You are going to have to wait it out and see after. If you deliver and the lining is stays thick..then you are going to have to get a biopsy. They cant do anything for you now...so just be really excited that you have a little baby coming into the world.

You have so much planning and shopping to do..plus the exhaustion. I know it is easier said then done, but I woudnt worry about it. Right now, focus on the baby and the excitement of that precisous life growing inside you.:)

I agree with Pat Fan...if you are concerned, go get a second opinion. Drs. are human, too and can make many mistakes. You should do whatever it takes to make you feel at ease with the situation so that you don't spend the rest of your pregnancy stressed (not good for you or the baby!). Good luck with everything and I will send lots of good thoughts and prayers that you will look back on these days and wonder what the worry was all about!

I'd be finding another doctor and asap.

I found this website:
http://www.bobrow.net/kimberly/birth/hcglevels.html
and it says that an hcg level of 0-5 is common at 7 days since conception and levels of 3-426 at 14 days past conception.
An HCG level of 5 does not mean you weren't pregnant.

FWIW I miscarried the first time I got pregnant and was pretty sure I was m/c again the second time. My HCG were not doubling like they should, they seemed low, lots of bleeding etc.
I went in for an u/s at 7 or 8 weeks, and there was her little heartbeat fluttering away.
The doctors response to our surprise: Sometimes babies don't read the textbooks. LOL
That baby will be 5 years old in October and she was full term, perfect in every way.

Good Luck with everything, and discuss your concerns with your OB, if s/he doesn't understand how worried you are, it's time to find a more caring doctor. {{{{hugs}}}}

I would go see another doctor too about the thickening before you were pregnant. If not, you're going to spend months worrying.

Could you see a high-risk ob? They usually have higher-tech equipment.

Ask for another vg ultrasound, this should help draw some conclusions.

I also slow to show positive on pregnancy tests, I happen to have really long cycles.

I bet is that you are further along than this Dr. thinks, which can only be good in my opinion, you are closer to the finish line!

God Bless!

My question (like it matters *now*) is why they didn't do an endometrial biopsy on June 25th? They take but a few minutes are are done in the office.

I hate to mention this, but are they continuing to monitor your hcg? I had a tubal pregnancy that started out similarly. (I'm not going to share the details because I don't want to frighten you unnecessarily.) The hcg will rise, but not in the manner it *should*. The thickened lining would be consistent with an early pregnancy, but the hcg is way too low to correlate with the dates.

At any rate, good luck. I agree that a second opinion and close monitoring is in order. I found this link very helpful during my recent pregnancy.

HCG in early pregnancy

The thickening of the uterus might be adenomyosis which is harmless. Mine was discovered during my last pregnancy but must have been present before I got pregnant. It was not there when I had my first four years before. If you are really concerned about it I would go for a second opinion.

You could have just skipped a cycle, so the lining was left over from that cycle and never shed during menstruation. Then the next cycle you ovulated and got pregnant.

I thought about this today too, driving in the car! Please see your doctor asap to rule this out. Zanesmama didn't want to scare you, but your life depends on it!

Keep us updated!

Your lining will just continue to get thicker until your period, so it was probably just thick because you skipped a period. A ******l u/s will be able date the pregnancy for you. I've had tons of u/s's, hcg tests, and even d&c's (and a d&e). If you have any very specific questions feel free to PM, I'm not squeamish on this subject at all. Oh, CONGRATULATIONS!;)

about 2 weeks after my first child I realized I had an infection and by that time I was very ill. I think my mom saved my life probably by telling me to go in! Anyways they said they didn't "get everything" the first time. I saw the placenta so it sounded pretty wierd to me (I always thought I was carrying twins and still do) So they did a D&C. From what I remeber I was put under and woke up real crampy. I bled a lot after having the baby and didn't notice a big difference after the D&C, I just cramped more for a while. Now I mean I bled A LOT before and after so I dunno how it would go for you if you are. I had to stop breast feeding :( so that didn't make me feel good. All in all it wasn't bad at all. I just had a biopsy and I would say it was comprable to the D&C. Now The emotional stuff wasn't there because I had just had a child and not had the other procedure. I wish you luck in finding out what in the heck is going on.

FWIW, I was having irregular cycles about 15 months ago. When I saw the doctor he said my lining was very thick as if my period was due. It was 2 days after a 12 day cycle!! He mentioned uterine cancer and scared me to death. The biopsy came back fine!!! My tubes were tied and cauterized five years earlier so pregnancy wasn't a concern. Your situation does sound peculiar. I'd see another doctor for the peace of mind. BTW, nothing was ever done for me but they went back to regular cycles the following month. He said he didn't have an explanation.
